In other news British.....i started Jon Lattimer's "1812: War with America" this week. Have for some time wanted to study up on this conflict. I'm not normally too inclined to study pre-industrial conflicts (at least in my adult life.....as a teen i had a brief Civil War flirtation)....but this conflict always interested me in the same way that Korea did....because its mostly a forgotten and understudied war. The book is very interesting so far. Given the typical American sensitivity whenever a foreign author tackles a subject involving americans....there's been some accusations of "bias" but so far i'm not seeing it. The criticisms the author does offer in the direction of America echo the problems it has faced at the beginning of other conflicts.....particularily Korea. Truth hurts.

Another book that works well for the War of 1812 is Six Frigates. I forget the authors name. I will look at the book later and add the author's name to this post.

Seven weeks vacation starting now tithe.

Hey Grollub,

Read a news blurb in the WSJ this morning. Indicated that Sweden just dropped compulsory military service. Will this affect you and your training efforts at all?

Currently unknown but unlikely. We'll still need officer training.

Brazil loses to the Netherlands...bit of a shock, I suppose. The U.S. sports talking heads painted the Brazilians as unbeatable, with no discernable flaws. Well, flaw exsposed!

lol...just read some reviews on Pierre Berton's Invasion of Canada 1812-13. I actually picked up this book last year at a used book store but never got around to reading it since it didn't cover the entire conflict. Based on the reviews however, i should probably do so after finishing Lattimer.

There's another irony to reading on this subject after so long. Back in the 90's when i was a regular member of warships1.com, the BBvsBB forum (it's most active and popular...with many subjects ranging far behind the title of the forum), American "patriots" on the board used to sneer at any scenario 18-19th century wise that depicted any possible conflict with Britian, always ending up with comments like. "yeah...we'd walk into Canada......" Apparantly none ever actually bothered to study the conflict and instead based their argument on raw population statistics and a displacement of modern American industrial might into the past.

I am gearing up to read Terry Copp's two books on the Canadian Army in Normandy over the next week, when I'll be on vacation in northern Michigan. Not sure how much time I'll have, though, as I'm also going to pop the question to my girlfriend.

That would be a fatal folly, as her mother runs an independent bookstore.

Just wondering if anyone here may have time to help out with a potential small scenario for AE.  I'm considering putting together something based around the third arakan campaign, not sure on much more than that at the moment.  I'm hoping to have a lot of leave approved soon so I'll have some free time to muck about with this kind of stuff.

one hour to go for me. I'm hoping to be able to spend some "Quality Time" with my signifigant other..........

a Brand new LG 24" LCD widescreen. ooooo baby.

After a bunch of research and one false start.....i've finally joined the Dark side and retired my nearly 10 year old 19" Sony CRT which was starting to show it's age (besides the fact that it was a butt ugly and big white slab of white plastic and metal on my otherwise modern looking computer setup)

WitPAE in 1920 x 1080 wide is impressive looking.

Started off the holiday weekend with a sandwich from Kepley’s, a local barb-b-que place. Tender pork in a subtle vinegar and red pepper sauce, topped with red cabbage slaw…add a few hush puppies and you’ve got a heavenly Tarheel delicacy. I’ve never found this style of barb-b-que anywhere else.
