Take a look at this thread over at wargamer. Also, take a look at the official forums. Long story short, the game was released in a very bad state with the developers aware of the situation. Basically, the game was released in a "beta" state with many bugs, inability to complete a game, performance issues, and missing features. However, the developers do seem committed to be aggressive with releasing patches and have released two patches since release (although the latest one really messed things up). Ultimately, you have to decide what your looking for at this point. If you want to assist with "beta" testing the product and contributing improvements, jump in now. If you want a fully complete and stable product, I would hold off for some time until a lot of the major issues are addressed. Your choice.

I bought it - pre-ordered it a few months ago - haven't played a single, solitairy minute

I will play it - I never got the first one and couldn't find the "gold" version on Steam, so left it...so I was always going to get this next itteration...I'm just leaving it just now until it mature a bit...let everyone else do the testing on it

This game was my first ever pre-release purchase, and it will be my last. Some people on this forum have complained bitterly about over priced products, this product would be over priced at any cost. They have had my money since April and I still haven't been able to finish a game. Now that's got a be value for money! In the words of Forest Gump, " that's all I have got to say about that!"

Certainly has me cautious for my next pre-release purchase as well. Although I knew it would not be a perfect product upon release, this one was a total mess in my opinion, especially with the developers acknowledging that and releasing anyways. Never should have been released like this. It will be interesting to see if this company's repuation survives this one. I'm hoping so in order for me to see the value of my $40 :)

Actually my experience goes further, I had the misfortune to buy from gamersgate, who debited my CC at the time of purchase, after some serious whinging, Muzzy Lane promised to let me into to their Beta testing, before the initial beta release. Well after about 2/3 weeks I finally got my hands on the beta and was placed on their beta forum, about 2 weeks before the official beta release. Initially couldn't get passed 300 turns and every time a new version was D/L the entire 700 megs had to be D/L each time, so it cost me more the the initial price. I think I have D/l the game in excess 12 times, one royal pain in the the butt. I'm cured forever when it comes to pre-releases. This game looked promising, but it certainly not playable right now in my opinion.

Sounds like a lot of work:) I got into the beta on the first day of the public beta release back in May. I was astonished to see how many issues were still present, even though at that time they planned to release on May 25th. Even after they pushed it back to June 22nd, I still scratched my head on how they were going to accomplish that, which in the end I guess we found out, they were going to release whether it was working or not.....and for most, it wasn't working:( I really found it hard to believe it had been in development for so long and delayed a few times and the game was still in bad shape.

I have come to expect games being released with a number of issues, but I have never personally seen one in this bad of shape and the developers freely admitting it was released broken and without features included. If you read the forums, there are only a few people that have ever been able to complete a game yet. The people I feel most sorry for are those who purchased it on release day without any intent to be a beta tester, especially if they are the type who don't frequent forums or bought the physical copy.

Although I really want this game to succeed because I want to like it, some day developers are going to have to take responsibility for doing stuff like this and maybe there will have to be a sacrifical lamb like this company to make other companies think different in the future about releasing a game like this. It would be different if they labeled their products with a warning sticker "Buyer beware: game is being released in unfinished state. What you are purchasing is our promise to eventually fix things."

Another thing that has killed me about this is everyone (including the developers themselves) always saying they are a "small company" and should in essence be cut slack. I hate when they say that. I don't care the size of the company since either way they are taken and spending my money and I expect the product to be of quality regardless. Sure, I might give the "small guy" a little more slack, but nowhere the slack this one is asking. Not sure why we should ever cut the developers a break since they don't ever treat their customer's differently based on their capabilities. For example, should we expect the developers to have a different price for customers who can't afford the game at its current price versus those that can? That would never happen so why should we cut them slack based on their size? Everyone should soley be judged based on the quality of the product provided.

End of rant....sorry.

I so agree with you! I am so sick of game companies / publishers ripping customers off. And treating their customers like criminals with their "DRM/Copy protection".
I have stopped buying games at the time of release. Usually I buy now games a) when there are already some patches out or more often b) when they are in the <20$ basket.
I do not buy single player games where I have to get a Steam account (no Steam bashing intended, just me :) ), be online all the time or register online (break this rule sometimes :) ). Bad luck for me...me missing out on some games I really wanted to have.
The only exception of my buying habit is here with Matrix. And I do not say this to get on their good side. But this is the only Game Publisher / Game Company I have found so far, where I feel that I am fairly treated. Of course there where also problems with some of their games, but I do not feel/never felt abandoned. All issues get a response, are followed up. That's why I still stick around!
@: Matrix for being an outstanding, positive example in this "rip off" industry:

I come from the other side of the fence...I like giving devs my money early so they can continue and I don't mind when they walk away - normally because I've already moved on to their/someone elses next latest and greatest game. As for DRM....how cool is that! I bought Fallout 3 recently on DVD and I need to keep the disc in the drive. Not only that, but it takes a while to spin up and check whatever it's checking. Gives me time to go shave or something.

Nah...devs need our help...especially the small ones

For a Developer there seems to be a lot of staff. check out the number admin dude on their site. 6 0r 7 even more perhaps. A small developer is Panther 2 or 3, and their games are far more refined. I would put Muzzy lane in the same boat as Paradox.

After getting burned on Mortal Online and giving a small company $75 a year before the game came out and the game is still broken and 10% finished I am done with "supporting" small devs by pre purchasing titles. Not to mention PI has burned me in that regard too. No more pre-orders for me.

No wonder developers continually try to get away with using their paying customers as Beta teams ..........

You may look at as “support” but in reality its probably more detrimental to the hobby in the long run .

First review appears to be out from Gamespot. Scores 4 out of 10. Reviewer says not worth the time or money right now.

http://www.gamespot.com/pc/strategy/makinghistoryiithewaroftheworld/review.html

Based on what I have seen so far, can't disagree.

Well guys you've sold me on how bad the game is. Don't think I'll waste my money. Thanks for the feedback.

Judge,

I couldn't tell, were you being serious that your Ok with any developer you provided money early on and they end up not delivering what was expected? If so, you have far more patience and sympathy then I do under these circumstances. I don't mind usually giving the money early if I believe they will deliver a good product, but if they don't deliver the goods, not sure I could be as forgiving as you are:) I don't care of the development team's size, trust is a two-way street and the developer also has to deliver to maintain the relationship, even if it is just one guy working out of his mother's basement.

Whew....I was hoping that was the case. Kind of funny now their forums/web site is down. My skeptical side of me says best way to control negative feedback :)

The site is running and the quotes looks promising.
However I was a little bit skeptic since I saw map of the Europe in the trailer for the first part.

Yep, that part of the site is working. But the actual http://making-history.com/forum/ site is not. I'm sure just a technical glitch, all sites have them.
