I'm playing against the IJ AI. I have been consitently seeing long tails showing where Japanese air attacks are coming from. Some greater than 5 hexes back to the enemy base or even off map (range greater than display).

My version shows 1.03.1102A. I think I have all patches & fixes installed except the current beta.

Is this situation normal and I am getting the long tails due to spotting? I don't think this is the case but wanted to know if there is a setting I need to change or install/reinstall a patch to correct.

Do you have FoW turned on or off?

You don't need to re-install

Yes the FOW is on.  Other FOW looks like it is working, sightings vary on the composition of enemy TF's.  Also I have had ships reported as sunk and then ~1 month later pop up ok.  Difficulty is on historical.

The only issue looks like the directional tail is too long.

The length of the tail usually is determined by how high/low the detection level of the attacking raid is.
A low detection means a short tail that is generally just the direction, whereas a higher value gets closer to the launching base.
There is still some randomness in the tail length which would be what you are seeing. The attack could be coming from the base near the end of the tail of from a base a bit further away.
