That is the Cleveland branch. Great great great granduncle Claude lit off with his new bride and a mule for the Ohio River Valley in 1822. There was a tragic error on the 1830 census. Claude was a poor speller...oh...who am I kidding...he was never right after that mule kicked him at 6 and straightened hs eyes out.

***** Situation, March 27, 1942*******

JJ tried to land more troops at Tanna but were driven off by Adelaid and 3 DD's. I do think some got ashore. Lake's TF failed to clear by daylight and was pounced on by Bettys and Kates from New Ullapol which is now level 3 (uggh). Lake's TF survived unscathed.

The Jap bombardment forces were quiet as tehy apparently had not been able to rearm after the previous days battles.

The Jap BB's are gone again. US subs are positioned to intercept the damaged CL and BB.

Troop strength has grown at New Perth.

********Situation, March 28, 1942***********

Jap transports were seen at Efate so Adm Lake's TF was sent to Efate from Tanna to try to intercept. The fiendishly clever LYB's saw this coming, evacuated the transports and send in Yubari, one DD and one DMS. They squared off at night at 2000 yds. Kikuzuki put a 5 in round into McDonough and Adelaide put a 6 inch round into Yubari.....then everybody went home.

The Jap cruiser force has been split. Chikuma and Nagara were sent to New Perth (La Foa) and destroyed 1 P-40 and dented the runway quite a bit. Some planes were also damaged but the runway was operational. New Edinburgh was not attacked. Their intel is getting better, evidently.

At daybreak and later in the afternoon, some hotshot Oscars did a fighter sweep over New Perth. Apparently our pilots were crappier than theirs or God was on their side because we lost 6 P-39/P-40 to 2 Oscars.

The weather is bad. The damaged Australia and Raleigh continue westward (without attack by the Bettys at New Ullapoo) toward Brisbane and safety. Flooding has stabilized on both.

Both New Perth and New Edinburgh are being mined by DM's sprinting in at night.

********Situation, March 30, 1942***********

NOTE: This SITREP was prepared by an ambitious young officer on acetate slides. Unfortunately, the ambitious young officer left the projector bulb on too long and nearly burnt down the Pacific Fleet Building 12A conference room and staff breast feeding area. The slides were destroyed as well.

The ambitious young officer is now Chief Morale Officer of Starbuck Island.

First the Intel guys tell us Kitakami was sunk in a gun battle....then they come back a month later and claim she was sunk bu a Dutch sub???????

Now they tell us Yubari was ventillated by Adelaide and two days later she is bombarding New Edinburgh.

To listen to battle reports, Kinugasa ought to look like a Swiss cheese but she is still operational.

Then there is the particularly egregious case of Akagi.

Does anyone else discern a pattern?

********Situation, March 31, 1942***********

Nagato is back. She and 2 cruisers bombard New Edinburgh again. The Japs needs an aquatic traffic cop because Chokai and Yubari nearly run into the first TF while bombarding New Edinburgh. 2 planes are destroyed and the runway is back to 55%. This would allow fighters but not bombers. There is no need for fighters at New Edinburgh right now anyway.

It looks like there is another BB along the Southern coast of New Scotland which will likely bombard New Perth again. 27 Zeroes swarm over New Perth in daylight, downing 2 P-39's and a P-40. I am going to get out all the flyable airframes out of New Perth except for the PBY's in anticiaption of bombardment tonight. The Jap bombardments at New Perth are chewing up the Arty units there. I will move one of the CD units at New Edniburgh to see if it will absorb some of the damage. The Allies are now taking all the punishment. My strategy now revolves around lucky hits by subs, mine damage and I have started a prayer vigil for a big ass typhoon.

USS Raleigh nearly made Brisbane but was finished off by an 800 lb bomb. I am guessing it was a Betty on naval search out of New Ullapool. This was particularly annoying as the weather was rated as "severe thunderstorm" or some such thing. God I hate this game........j/k.

The only really good news in the South Pacific was the sinking of the immensely annoying SS-RO-68 which had been patrolling off SUva for weeks.

Buildup of Auckland and Fiji continues.

*******Forward position, Edson's Raiders, Tanna Is., 18:40, March 30, 1942***********

A young USN officer stumbles forward over the still warm bodies of a squad of Japanese SNLF troops, which have evidently fallen in an assault. His halting gate suggests a grevious injury. He lurches forward, arresting his fall on the shoulder of a fallen enemy propped up against a tree.

A young USN officer: Oh, I am so sorry.

Marine sentry in an improved position 20 yds away: HALT! Who goes there? Advance and be recognized.

A young USN officer: Oh, thank God. <he stands upright, no injury now apparent, squinting with one eye in the direction of the sentry> Is this the latrine? It's Lt. McGoo, US Navy. I really have to go bad.

Hey...it's working. There is a big thunderstorm in the South Pacific and Coral Sea. HMAS Australia made Brisbane safely (partly due to the weather).

I am sending a Bn of US Army 103rd inf. Regt to Tanna by fast transport under the bad weather....AND..I have some "volunteer" AK's headed for New Edinburgh. If they make it they will no doubt attract some Bettys and Kates which I hope to kill with a P-39/P-40 trap. Any that survive will try to take off damaged airframes from New Edinburgh.

Hey...I can dream can't I?

Cumulative USN combatant losses from all causes from defence of New Scotland and the New an Improved New Hebrides (RNN Van Ness was lost near Koepang):

I am most upset with myself over the loss of Salt Lake City and 2 DD's to the Jap carriers. I tried to squeeze in one last convoy. Se la guerre.

OK...it's early '42.

1) I think Tibbits is still in high school and living at Enola's house.

2) There aren't any "undocumented". They are all still in Mexico converting fireworks into Mk 5 Naval Mines.

3) There are no air groups at Wendover. I just checked. Nobody wants to be based there. There are no bars and it is a 3 hr drive one-way to Jackpot just to play a little craps. Even worse, all the women are locked up by 8 PM.

4) There is, however, a Japanese internment camp in the Owen's Valley., (about 300 miles away). One can't be too careful. There might be a big breakout of 60 year old men and 14 year olds. Plus, there might be a big surge of rice-paper baloon bombs.

He wasn't quite THAT young, being born in 1915, and entering the service in 1937, well at least in our timeline... he would have been over in Europe with the 8th Air Force, probably as CO of the 340th Squadron, 97th Bomb Group in early 1942... of course in WW2(c) or whatever this timeline is, it could be different.

Now, on April 2nd JJ gets serious and sends a carrier raid against Darwin. Either they've never reconed the place (and I don't think they have) or this is just the opening probing attack:

Afternoon Air attack on TF, near Darwin at 76,124

Weather in hex: Heavy rain

Raid detected at 120 NM, estimated altitude 12,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 45 minutes

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 6
B5N2 Kate x 32
D3A1 Val x 17

Allied aircraft
P-39D Airacobra x 37
F4F-3A Wildcat x 18

Japanese aircraft losses
A6M2 Zero: 2 destroyed
B5N2 Kate: 11 destroyed, 5 damaged
D3A1 Val: 7 destroyed

Allied Ships
DD Tenedos
AMc Merbabo
DD Express
DD Vampire

Meanwhile in China JJ has taken Paoshan with these guys:

1st Tank Regiment
55th Engineer Regiment
15th Guards Regiment
33rd Division
17th Indpt Guards Regiment

Now, if they're in Western China at the wrong end of a dirt track who's left to garrison Burma? Sat in India getting into far too much trouble in the bars and whore houses are the British 70th Div, 80th (?) Brigade, 7th Armoured and an entire Corps of Australian troops. Is it too soon to go back in?
