So - with only a few games vs. the AI under my belt, for the first time in my life I've finally decided to take the plunge into PBEM. Being a fresh, new player, naturally I'm playing against one of the most experienced WPO players out there, Rysynok . Should be fun and interesting!

Parameters: 3 day turns, sub doctrines off, extremely variable reinforcements. Allied powers are only activated after they are attacked. As of this writing we are already about 5 turns into the game. Thus far I have not taken any screenshots, but will do so in the future.

I should add that I'm borrowing some of the editorial techniques used in Aces8's AARs.

Gallant USS Rochester, CA-2, sank immediately following this action. The cruiser was commissioned in 1893 as the USS New York, and saw action in the Spanish-American War under that name, and as the USS Saratoga during World War I. Her name was finally changed to Rochester in late 1917, and it was that name she carried to her watery grave.

It would be nice if they popped in from time to time. I know this game is far from being the newest or most played in their inventory anymore. But it is the only computer game in this particular genre out there, is still offered for sale on the Matrix website, and definately has a loyal following, complete with awesome new fan mods. Cheers!

S-7 became the first ship on either side to be attacked by aircraft, when a C1M1 dropped bombs or depth charges near her NE of Aparri. They missed the submarine. The plane was believed to be from Aparri.

The scout cavalry definately earned their pay in San Marcelino. But options get more limited with each port that gets captured. He can now safely land reinforcements from Formosa, which is a lot closer then any other troops of consequence I may have. And there's a lot of IJA ground units in Luzon right now. All my troops really can do is dig in - for now.

The USS William B. Preston, DD-334, quietly foundered several hundred miles west of the Phillipines. The hard-luck destroyer was beat up in the 6/3 Battle of Lingayen Gulf, then while limping back to Manila was torpedoed by the French-made SS No. 15 the following day. She made it back to Manila, but with the situation in that area deteriorating, with 4 Kongo-class BCs spotted W of Manila Bay and enemy troops closing in, she left port (I hate losing ships to LCUs). More by luck then by skill, she somehow evaded the blockade around the Phillipines, but with no hope of reaching a US port and her floatation damage steadilly increasing, she sailed off into eternity. Her distress calls were heard by the Royal Navy, who sent a rescue ship for her crew. The survivors now comfortably interred in Singapore for the remainder of the war, in accordance with Part X, Article 15 of the 1907 Hague Convention.

One of these days, I'm going to do an AAR based on the notes I took of my now-completed first and only grand campaign against the AI - you'll see why I grew to hate when LCUs destroy ships in port, and why I actually wanted to look up the Hague Convention.

CL New Orleans, Shell hits 3, heavy damage (she sank after this action)

The loss of the USS New Orleans may have been avoided had I not forgot to set her home port for Davao and auto-disband once she got there. She may have eventually foundered or been sunk by the IJN anyway, but it didn't help matters when I started the turn thinking she was safely disbanded in port, only to find her 3-4 hexes away with her floatation damage rising. Since the 2 old BBs she encountered did nothing more then sink her outside the port, I can only assume they were sent with that specific task in mind - the 6/18 battle against the MLs off Davao having tipped him off that she and possibly the rest of the Asiatic Squadron were in the area. Still, if she had to go I'd rather she went down fighting, even if it was against overwhelming odds.

I had a feeling you'd be sending a welcoming committee to Davao for her. But I really didn't think she'd make it to any other port where she could disband, so it became a race. BB Okinoshima and BB Suwo won.

Congratulations on your 1500th post, by the way.

Well, the war is just over one month old. Either through Rysynok's brilliance, or my incompetence, the Japanese are further along in territorial gains then they were historically on January 9, 1942. Major difference between history and this war, besides the 20-year difference, is I don't have a bunch of sunk or damaged BBs at Pearl Harbor, and the war as of this time only involves the USA vs. Japan.

As of this point I have 4 infantry divisions and 2 infantry brigades - all but 1 division of which are assigned to restricted HQs. That's less LCUs then the Japanese have on Luzon alone. We'll see where this ends up.

If the war ended now, it would clearly be a Japanese victory. But I'm not giving up right now

The score as of 7/3/1922:

From the aide-de-camp of the US Navy Commander-in-Chief to the esteemed Senator from Massachusetts, in the waiting room outside the Oval Office in the White House:

"Well sir, its like this: We tried telling him the good news first - that we sunk a minelayer and a cargo ship in the last few days. And then once he was warmed up we told him, 'oh by the way, all forces in Manila surrendered today. And those guns you spent millions of dollars to defend it against a sea attack - well, it was the craziest thing - they attacked us overland, not a single ship was fired upon. Oh and before I forget, we're probably going to lose another submarine. Oh, and also...'

That's when he pointed at the Admiral and said he wanted to speak to him privately in his office. They've been in there for a couple hours now. I'm sorry they're keeping you waiting this long".

DD Tatnall, DD-125, gets credit for sinking the first Japanese submarine in the war.
MSW Tanager, AM-5, had over 50% flooding, and foundered 5 days later on her way back to Pearl Harbor. She had a short, but active life. Commissioned in 1918, she was assigned to escort duty out of the Azores during World War I. That same year, 1918, she delivered serum to BB Georgia, whose crew was suffering from the Spanish Influenza outbreak. After the war, she was put to work sweeping minesfields in the North Sea. She was badly damaged when one exploded too close to her in June 1919. She was out of action till the end of the year, and was reassigned to Pearl Harbor in 1920, where she remained until she foundered on July 23, 1922.

AS Rainbow is the most hated Allied ship in the first three months of any WPO campaign.

It will not be missed :)

Hey, just so people know, I'm going to be tied up with something for the rest of the week. So right now the campaign and AAR are on temporary hiatis. I may be able to sneak in a turn or two, but more likely not. But hopefully things are back to normal next week before I go into WPO withdrawl
