So the remaining ID of II Corps cleans house with the help of 11th ID from 18th Army (light purple - violet - Northern Star will no doubt be able to confirm the precise shade! )

Finally, for the clear out in front of the main offensive 122nd ID smashes the 84th Mot Div at Kaunas. So 2 Corps and 1 ID to make the initial break through. I have routed or shattered everything in the front line, but no pockets. So, second phase, drive the next Infantry Corps as deep as possible to provide a carpet for the Pz and Mot Divs. Oh and we'll see how the lone Corps gets on in sweeping Courland.

Less frequent/detailed posts now, until and unless something of interest crops up or I need to do the rail repair or whatever.

Group Courland do well - especially in routing 23rd Tank Division with the loss of 286 afv's for the loss of 122 men.

Rail conversion follows the successful advance I Corps - the construction battalions (highlighted in yellow box) are working flat out in the summer sun, more than 27,000 men of FBD 4. Remember our civilian engineers are heroes too: without them, no more advances. Luckily the Baltic rail lines are more readily converted to the German rail gauge than those of the Soviet heartlands

Er-hem!   I had to re-do some of those moves because I went on to move the wrong division in support of a whole different Pz Corps attack.   This would not have happened to a real German general staff officer(!), so I took the move back.  This has meant some of the earlier moved units are in slightly different places but all is in essence as it was.  Lesson - use the Quick Save function often.

Riga does fall, but I am not able to cross the river to occupy it, except with my HQ unit. Reinhardt and his staff are, I suspect, no match for Stalin's wrath in the coming turn!

OK - here's how it stands at the end of turn 1. How am I doing? What have I missed, forgotten or never knew about? What would you have done differently? And can I have another Panzer Korps, if I ask nicely?

So good ratios for machines and men lost but is it anything like enough?

That attack against the Tank Division had a pretty ahistorical result. The Germans have, at this time, some good medium range AT guns but mostly 37mm's in infantry formations. You're attacking in clear terrain, without Luftwaffe ground attack support, yet your infantry division manages to destroy 286 Soviet AFV's, with no Axis AFV's involved in the battle and with no anti-tank guns effective beyond medium range. That is, unless that Panzerjager battalion borrowed some 88's. The attack value of 3300 seems way too high for an attacking formation with little effective weapons for dealing with its target.

The more combat results I see in AAR's, the more it seems the Soviets won't be able to even delay the Germans anywhere because the Germans seem to be getting substantial attack bonuses, regardless of whether they would realistically be able to do much damage against a target.

As to your opening moves: I'd say they're pretty solid, although I would probably have moved more of my infantry to clear out the railline leading to Daugavpils (where those two routed Soviet stacks are) as currently the Soviets have a chance to cut off both spearheads. I doubt they'll have the movement points to do so, but it could possibly be a problem in a situation where the Soviet mobile forces are not routed.

Stuart, I have not played the 41 campaign for a long time, but I think you should have crossed the big river in many different points, for example the points showed with the arrows. I also think you should have taken Riga in the 1st turn, to deny the Soviets some VP. In this situation your units can have the supply cut by the Soviets.

In case of 23rd Tank Division 100% of those AFVs were old T-26 and BA cars. German infantry had all means (37mm was more then enough) to destroy them in quantity.

BTW thanks for the posts, people. If I had the men and the machines and movement capacity, I would have advanced everywhere, especially across the big river!

Here's how it looks after my Air Recon and a couple of ID moves near Riga, and the AGC Corps (green) supporting the flank to the SE. Now what?

I've assigned Totenkopf to LVI Pz and have beefed up the HQ with a Flak Regiment (lots of 88's) and the Tot with a Flak Bat and Pioneers. This is probably a prelude to doing something daft!

Before you worry too much about the panzers, I have dropped loads of supplies by air. As there is very little by way of Russian fighter cover, I have been able to do this with impunity.

So - the plan, such as it is. Clean up the bits and pieces in the red circles marked 1, 18th go North to Tallinn and Narva, 16th supports 4th Pz who spearhead the main offensive, whilst another Corps from 16th exploits towrds Velikie Luki

only thing I would say, is to used your troops in the rear for the opening attacks, that will allow your front line troops a couple more MP's to spend in moving

and those SU troops under Riga, you got to hit the ports, or they are just going to slip away and be used later on

Heh. This screenshot reminds me of how I would play against the AI when I first started and how dangerous it is doing the same against a human opponent. I tried punching deep like this against Andy and he would always slip in a couple of Russian divisions to cut off my supply lines. One of the first lines of defense for a human Soviet player is anchored on Pskov along the Velikaya River and down to the Sinyaya. Andy would keep a few divisions spread along the main supply route, thus slowing me down to deal with them and then would start digging in around Pskov. He would also keep a handful of divisions in Estonia looking for the opportunity to cut off my supply line with those big gaps.
