I´m not amazed about the reports of PBEM players in later stages of their games that their subs are dead meat with more and more of those E ships being available... at the moment I have 2 subs put out of action in five days usually... not sunk but with enough damage to be sent home, which means with the distance going back and forth, a sub usually isn´t on patrol for 4-6 weeks, depending on damage... repairing the subs only takes a couple of days from being completely destroyed to brand new, the new repair routines aren´t working for small ships IMO... having a sub in sinking condition being repaired in three or four days is a joke... in real life it took longer to patch up undamaged subs in between their patrols than it takes in the game when they are heavily damaged... a sub isn´t a rowboat...

sending some AOs to pick up fuel for the fleet, the escorts did their job... I´m desperetely short of fuel, even though I´ve used my tanker fleet since day one of the war... only using US tankers to supply the USN in Australia is by far not enough, some time ago I´ve started to also use big AK convoys to ferry fuel, each carrying around 100.000 fuel... using xAKs for this leaves a bit of a strange smell though but at the same time I guess the whole USN tanker fleet would have been enough to ferry the fuel needed by the USN but that´s not the case... and I don´t have a single US fuel being sucked up by Australia´s HI because I don´t unload fuel at any of those Australian bases...

but as long as we sink freighters I´m happy... I´ve stated a couple of times that the enemy´s air ASW has been completely useless all the year of 42 with probably a hundred attempted attacks and only a couple of hits that at best did moderate damage... seems like Rainer took advice from the forum or something within the engine changes in 43 because he now gets more and more succesful attacks on my subs, especially using Lillies... either he trained them up in another skill needed or that´s a case of very bad luck on my side... no sinkings yet but probably five times more subs hit in the first three months of 43 than we have suffered during the whole year of 42... my subs usually don´t run out of torps or fuel, they are forced to retire due to damage before that could happen... still more or less no subs lost though...

Heavy cruiser Maya still afloat??? wow, that´s surprising... Maya was hit a week ago by 3 torps of my Aussie Beaufighter anti shipping squadrons but obviously stayed afloat... that´s really amazing because I´ve lost Enterprise immedietely after taking three torps and a 250kg bomb... Maya was attempting to reach Lunga it seems, but there are enough S-class subs in the Solomons to catch her... I still was really surprised...

and I now definetely expect the ship to be sunk...

am trying to knock out all bases in the Solomons and Rabaul as we´re already planning on doing the next invasion... target: Munda... can only hope that the enemy won´t have his remaining carriers (far more than we have) in the area... doing daily recon of Truk only gives us intel on DDs at best, seems like Truk isn´t the homeport for any IJN capitol ships, of course our intel could be complete rubbish, but usually the game indentifies an AK for a BB and not a BB for a DD so I´ve got hopes to get away with my invasion without having to fight (and lose) the next carrier clash... of course a lot depends on getting near the target unspotted, therefor I want to permanently take out all airbases in the region...

we keep attacking here, while the enemy still gets nice adjusted av, the enemy´s combat ability is decreasing quickly while we only take light losses... mentioned it earlier a couple of times already, can someone enlighten me please why the enemy all the time get´s positive and negative multipliers while we hardly ever get one...

losing three nav search and two recon aircraft today... two transports lost too, we´re transporting supplies to the dot base at Groete Island (the one where I lost the carrier engagement) because I intend to mass drop paras there (150+ av) and further secure the base with landing craft convoys... this should increase the pressure on Darwin, while the main goal only would be to make my opponent a bit nervous... the Solomons are unimportant but I would suggest to every Japanese player to hold Darwin as long as possible as Darwin is a real key to the SRA... on both sides of New Guinea you more or less run into dead ends (Merauke and Hollandia) where you can only further advance with heavy carrier support because the next base is something like 8 or 9 hexes away (not even dot bases are close by)... Rainer knows all of this too and that´s exactly what he did, I tried to move away from Merauke (in that case only going West and not North) but his carrier force being at best 1:1 to mine completely trashed our Navy...

all the flak I´ve got is totally useless... really wonder if flak is modelled by far to weak, considering how many aircraft were actually lost to flak in real life and the fact that I´ve massed all my AA units in the bases around Rangoon we don´t do any notable damage to the enemy... all you´ve got to do is stay at 10000ft and you´re save as only big calibre guns can reach you, not doing damage... I serioulsy doubt that 10000ft was a safe height in real life...

doing naval search or recon in AE is actually far more dangerous than doing bombing runs at 10000ft against a heavily flak defended target or doing long range fighter sweeps against enemy opposition...

we´ve lost 5 nav search and 1 recon aircraft but no fighter on their sweep... the enemy didn´t lose a single bomber attacking Pegu at 10000ft where I´ve massed halve a dozen AA units... zzz... that can´t be modelled well and no, that´s not a one time example, it´s happening all the time in this PBEM...

as is Rangoon... also Rangoon could be seen as a flak trap, considering all the flak guns there... I just have to smile when I read about Rabaul of real life and how the flak there was feared by Allied pilots and crews, but there was for sure by far not what I´ve got in the bases around Rangoon, there are hundreds of heavy flak guns, hundreds... flying naval search results in more losses for me than for the enemy when he attacks heavily defended ground targets... not a single bombers is shot down...

Despite playing scen 2 which gives Japan a solid boost, you're still doing well on several fronts like Solomons / New Guinea and in Burma
The setbacks you've suffered are hard to avoid and in a way you've chosen this challenge yourself by playing the machosistic scen 2....

- Allowing Japan to accelerate carrier production and up pilot training and ac production is partially compensated by extending the game with a year until 46.
You still got 3 years to go and are already in Rangoon and Lae!

It's possible to concentrate on reinforcing your successes by continuing your advances in Burma and in NG and by clearing Oz.
This can be done with support from LBA and you can rebuild your carrier fleet and air arm and switch to island jumping sometime in 44.

There will be thousands of annoyances, but increasingly for Japan as the war swings into 44.
The advantage is that you know the strenghts and weaknesses of the game and have to adapt to them.

My advice is to shut of the "annoyance" switch and try not to care too much each time your sweeps are divided in 3, your bombers are not escorted by fighters from the same base,
your torpedoes fail to detonate, your asw doesn't hit anything and all carrier TFs will continue to launch massive coordinated death star uber strikes

I have noticed many of the same weaknesses as you do and posted a few threads about it, but I have a feeling that no more major changes will be made to the sea, air and ground combat models.

Good luck on your way to Tokyo

PS! Now I now why the AAR is called ...vs Ranting Castor

I think it´s more fun playing scen 2 to give the Japanese a bit of a boost as you don´t want to run into a situation where Japan has lost in mid 43 in a PBEM I guess.

The things I´m ranting about are usually valid for both sides and I agree, most annoyances won´t be changed so we´ve got to live with them. Unfortunetely they annoy me again and again and again.

In mid 43 I should have carrier superiority already again, but I felt my carrier force superior last time too when we got our head handed by KB´s single 505 aircraft strike so that will be interesting then. Not long until the Hellcat but if they don´t engage (like the Wildcats did) then not even a Super Hornet would help you.

My rants won´t stop, but it´s not that bad a new forum member might think...

Could you stick up a screenshot of the big global map by any chance? I'm curious what the overall state of play is.

CT what are your major ship losses to this date? Your best guess as to your opponent's?

I am also playing scen#2 and in many ways hate it. However, I am not losing and sort of look foward to seeing a fight go into 1946, so that should be interesting.

a) I think it´s more fun playing scen 2 to give the Japanese a bit of a boost as you don´t want to run into a situation where Japan has lost in mid 43 in a PBEM I guess.

b) In mid 43 I should have carrier superiority already again, but I felt my carrier force superior last time too when we got our head handed by KB´s single 505 aircraft strike so that will be interesting then. Not long until the Hellcat but if they don´t engage (like the Wildcats did) then not even a Super Hornet would help you.

a) could not agree more
b) since I am too lazy to read through all of this AAR again I'll just ask, how are your TBs doing vs Japanese combat TFs?
Mine seems to be made of paper and fuel or something, as I have probably launched some 400 TBs in total over my games against Japanese TFs containing 1+ BB woth CA/CL/DDs as escorts and only scored two hits, both by the swordfish. Seems the US TBs are more suited to take on unarmed merchants.

And second the motion for a global map and victory points etc update.

Hi guys

The game actually is 3 weeks ahead of the AAR (usually doing the updates at work but haven´t had time lately ), but here are some screens from the latest turn. Some interesting things happened lately so I don´t want to take away too much but here you go.

strategic map:

Goals are still to push out the Japanese from Northern Australia but that´s a hard task against five enemy divisions so the next weeks will concentrate on mopping up the Solomons, which aren´t much more than a secondary target. Hope that KB won´t intervene, if it does, it probably would end in a defeat for us. Reconning Truk daily but there´s nothing there in terms of IJN capitol ships, at least that´s what I guess.

Our major offensive in Burma was stopped by around 7000+ enemy av in total, spread between Chiang Mai and Moulmein. Don´t know where the Japanese get that many divisions from, I´m facing 5 or 6 in Northern Australia, have destroyed two already on New Guinea, got intel about another at Shortlands and am facing 7000+ av in the area South East of Rangoon. In total, we´re talking about the equivalent of around 25 IJA divisions in the frontlines, so if you add in those further behind or where we haven´t attacked...

25 Divisions means very likely that he has no considerable reserves. However dont forget that 6 naval guards are the roughly AV equivalent of a Division, and he has alot of them.

Here are the ship losses, again, this is a screen from the game being three weeks ahead of the AAR but there wasn´t a major clash between the Navies so major losses should be spot on.

The Japanese losses should be quite correct, with the probably exception of the CVL which was hit by one MK14 very close to Japan months ago so I wonder why it still shows up as sunk as I expect it not to be sunk (CVL Ryujo IIRC). The BB was sunk at Adak so that´s a kill for sure and it seems we´ve sunk two CVs (Hiyo and Junyo) in our carrier engagement where we´ve lost three BBs, a CV (Enterprise), 5 CVEs and a CA. With the damage on more USN capitol ships it was a clear IJN victory. So again, if possible, stay away from KB if you can´t outnumber the enemy 2:1. We had a superior force for sure but were whiped out by a single 505 aircraft strike from KB. I´ve ranted enough about seeing such a number in one strike, I´m tired about starting about it again.

The enemy cruisers listed were mostly lost during fast transport missions, same goes for the DDs. Enemy freighter/tanker losses mostly due to our subs, enemy sub losses sure aren´t as high as listed. 10 Allied subs lost so far, halve a dozen to depth charges, but 1/43 saw a dramatic change in enemy ASW performance. As the Allied you may think 1/43 would be good for you due to the dud rate going down to 50% but in fact the efficiency of IJN ASW seems to be skyrocketing due to the 15% increase in ASW ability. Add in the E class escorts that can´t be sunk it seems (three dozen attacks+ in three months in 43 and not one was sunk so far) and I can understand why Allied players in 44 tell you to keep your subs in their homeports.

yeah, but I haven´t even included enemy nav guard units in my calculation. What we already identified in Australia, the Burma front (and what we already destroyed on New Guinea) is worth more than 7000 av and that´s purely divs or bgds and tk rgts.

It´s the old story being true in WITP already, a US TBF is only worth 1/4 Kate. The Kates are killers with torps while the TBFs are at best an annoyance. That´s one of the reasons KB is twice as dangerous as a US carrier force with equal number of aircraft. TBF performance with torps may be modelled very well compared to real life but Kate performace with torps is a wet fart compared to real life. I´m not talking about putting a torpedo into a heavily damaged capitol ship, I´m talking about Kates putting series of torps into undamaged capitol ships steaming at flank speed. The fact that Zeroes in the game have not much more problem to take down SBDs or TBFs than Wildcats have taking down Vals and Kates (as could be seen in this AAR during the carrier engagement where 150 US Wildcats MORE only shot down the same number of aircraft the Zeroes could shoot down) and you end up on the losing end in 4 out of 5 engagements with an "equal" IJN carrier force. The SBDs definetely are superior to the Vals due to being tougher and carrying a 1000lb bomb but this advantage is three times compensated by the uber Kates. Our carrier TFs weren´t defeated by the hundreds of Vals but by the hundreds of torpedo armed Kates, all of them in one strike. I guess the Kates in this single carrier engagement have put a couple of times more torps into my ships than they did in the whole war in real life.

Here´s the current victory points screen. As you can see, the gap is closing and I doubt the enemy can do anything against it. We´ve never even come close to being in danger of an auto victory and have been scoring more points than the enemy for months already. At the end of March the ratio is 1,335:1 for the Japanese. The big jump for the Japanese at turn 405 was the carrier engagement. The jump for the Allied at turn 348 was the liberation of Rangoon. We´ve been more or less scoring twice as many victory points than the enemy in the last year and that ratio is growing in our favour.

9 x B-25D1 Mitchell bombing from 10000 feet

don´t know what kind of feature that is! First off, the Mitchells were ordered to airfield attack, so no idea why these barges show up in the combat report (they are disbanded into the port), also don´t know why the Mitchells are shown as bombing from 10000ft as they were STRAFING... have heard about it but wanted to test it, attack bombers always drop to 100ft it seems to do strafing/bombing attacks... means I will use them only for nav attacks in 99% of the time in future... as you can see, they´ve hit nothing...

Morning Air attack on 5th Marine Defense Battalion, at 82,130 (Groote Eylandt)

Weather in hex: Clear sky

Raid spotted at 33 NM, estimated altitude 32,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 10 minutes

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 4

No Japanese losses

Aircraft Attacking:
4 x A6M2 Zero sweeping at 30000 feet *

Groote Eylandt has been reinforced with paras (by air transport) and with a Marine def btn (by landing crafts) in the last couple of days and Rainer of course didn´t miss that... that´s the island I wanted to build up and that´s where my carrier fleet was heading to when KB showed up... that´s the first step to put real pressure onto Darwin, there are two dot bases further North (Gove and Wessel Island), these are 8 hexes (Corsair range) from Darwin, Groote Eylandt is 9 hexes from Darwin. We´ve used C-47 en masse to transport as many paras onto the dot base as possible, there are enough supplies and nearly 200 av on the island already, can be further reinforced... we´ve lost the initiative here twice, first time a fast transport APD force was whiped out due to the fast transport movement bug, then my carriers were shot to pieces and the troop convoy was again sent back... this is the third time and I decide to stay!

Next landing craft convoy will start bring in engineer units, want to build up the airfield asap, normal size is 5 so it won´t take long to be built up. When we reach level 3 we´re going to move to Gove to build that one up, should make holding Darwin impossible for the Japanese as this means we could send Lightnings from Groote Eylandt (9 hexes) and Corsairs from Gove (8 hexes). Horn Island and Merauke could send 150 4E bombers... we can´t break through at Kathering with our ground troops but if the enemy airfield at Darwin can be closed and kept being suppressed, then the situation changes immediately as the enemy supply situation would be screwed, not to forget that it would be a suicide attempt to send convoys to pick up the Japanese Army when we´ve got two fighter bases in range (where I could also put torp carrying Beauforts and B-25D1 lownav attack bombers) and two heavy bomber bases in range.

The enemy answers with air attacks from Darwin...

now what about that? Our invasion fleet ends up in range of quite a precious convoy located at Tulagi, no idea what the ships actually were doing there, Tulagi has no airfield but two units are reported being there... I guess this TF was tasked to pick them up... As you can see, I´ve deliberetely set my Avengers to use bombs for their attacks and the results are phenomenal... bomb hit after bomb hit was scored by the Avengers, I bet they wouldn´t have scored more than a couple of hits at best if attacking with torps... most of the hits were scored by the TBFs... the downside of this attack is that the enemy now knows that we´ve got carriers in the area, our invasion convoys weren´t spotted so perhaps Rainer my think that was only a carrier raid... to support that oppinion I´ve also asked him if he hasn´t seen my patrol aircraft the last two turns that enabled me to intercept his convoy and he replied, "no I haven´t"... well, his ships couldn´t have seen them, because our patrols didn´t spot the convoy and we stumbled into it by pure luck...

Anyway, I´ve decided to keep going and send the invasion in to land at Munda... 300 carrier based aircraft are supporting this operation... as my SBD squadrons screwed up their size upgrades completely with the latest beta patch, I had to reconfigure my carriers, which means I´ve replaced two carrier´s SBD squadrons with Wildcat squadrons from the damaged carriers Hornet and Lexington... In total we´ve got something like 200 fighters and 100 bombers on the carriers... With our airfield attacks I don´t fear land based strikes against our fleet, KB popping up in the next two days could wreck all offensive attempts for the next 10 months though...

it´s not that easy this time to dislodge us, we came to stay... I doubt the enemy will try again to attack us here, we´ve got so many bombers in the area set to nav attack that an amphib invasion would be costly and I doubt KB will move into the area again...

today´s air losses have been quite severe. Landing on a carrier seems to be as dangerous as flying naval search. 8 aircraft of the attack on the enemy TF were lost to ops, 3 ac were lost on nav search... as soon as my aircraft operate over water, it´s kind of like flying in the Bermuda triangle...

As we´ve had the discussion about TRACOM recently, here´s a screenshot. I´ve NEVER transferred any pilots there, still there are some. Also note all those Canadian pilots there, no idea how they got there, with that low exp it shouldn´t even be possible to transfer them into TRACOM

looks like we´ve run into a misunderstanding... house rules said "no strategic bombing in China" and "no Allied strategic bombing of Japanese occupied Allied HI/OIL/resources"... now the first one of course meant ALLIED China but it wasn´t 100% clear obviously and Rainer said if I would strategic bomb in China, he would do the same... I´ve said "well, I´ve bombed Canton and that clearly was Japanese on turn one"... of course, Canton is in China too and I therefor broke hr one... now instead of saving Allied China from strategic bombing, all Allied strategic bombing outside is forbidden now...

Rainer offered to change the hrs to some point but I said the hrs were agreed on and even though I meant something different, that´s the way to go... means I can´t bomb more or less anything outside of Japan. Thailand and Korea could be targetted outside of Japan but Thailand hasn´t got much to bomb and the rest is out of range...

here comes the next squadron, drawing in more leaking fighters... our fighters had no problem with the enemy, one squadron decided not to launch at all though... we had the endless dive, therefore it was quite a onesided engagement...

I´ve ranted about the borked supply routine before (Burma, Northern Australia, China...) that enables huge Allied (or Japanese of course) Armies to march overland and stay supplied as long as they stay outside of bases no matter how far they march. Now there are even more ridicoulos issues about the supply routine, have a look at the screenshot below. There you can see two units that have been unloaded at Munda, the base force that isn´t fighting at all received the ridicoulos amount of 25412 supplies while the fighting Canadian bgd didn´t even get it´s needed supplies. I was lucky that at least the British division got 9000 supplies, otherwise I could either move in trying to bring more supplies and hope that the combat troops actually get supplies and that the supplies aren´t sucked up by base forces or I could evacuate again because my combat troops don´t get supplies.

Sorry, but what´s wrong with the supply routines? And please don´t tell me again it´s everything just fine after I see these issues for a repeated time and I´ve moved 7000 av from India into Burma without having a single day supply issues... I´ve had probably a hundred ships unloading supplies at Munda, the base force sucked up most of the supplies that were unloaded, how strange is that? If there isn´t a supply "depot" at the beach, couldn´t you make sure that at least the combat troops get the supply or is this another penalty I´m not aware of?

177 Allied fighters on Cap at 6 different alts, all pilots at 70 skill being swept by two dozen stratosphere Oscar II that shoot down 20 of our fighters for not a single loss within the Oscars... yeah, realistically... you know the reason for it? Probably, if you have read this AAR before: DIVE... the enemy was diving and diving and diving and diving and diving and diving... every single squadron on Cap was being dived on by the Oscars until the Oscars ran out of ammo... 177 vs 25, kill rate 0:20... reason: the dive! last time I read hot air from the main responsible, he said "the dive only lasts for a short period where you are able to take out a couple of enemies"... funny, but such a comment is easily explained by the fact that "I haven´t fired up the game for a long time"... hot air, nothing else, sorry...

I want to say it in all clearity, IMO such results are just plain stupid and everyone (from the air team leader -that actually only seems to be a big ego who isn´t even playing the game - to the couple of his supporters - that NEVER have shown a series of combat reports that show the different) that thinks such examples would be realistic can only be called insane by me. Sorry, if people are too ignorant to see what alt has made out of AE combat then these people got a serious problem. Either with their eyes or the inside of their head...

PLAIN STUPID!

Rainer told me I was lucky that two more squadrons on sweep didn´t launch at all, otherwise I probably would have lost something like 60 fighters for perhaps 4 or 5 kills within the enemy... all of his squadrons can fly higher than my fighters... I miss the beta tester that had the balls to call the air model being the worst of all in AE. There´s definetely some truth in this and I stopped wondering long ago why there were so many people quitting during development. Grow up and get over your ego please, it´s borked as it is. Like many people on the forum posted already, altitude is all that matters and that is just off, either the air teamleader is missing oxygene from flying or he´s ignorant enough to ignore where air combat actuall took place in the Pacific in real life. Or he just can´t get over his ego actually admitting that there is something out of whack. Of course there were all these comments on how great pre Cap flak would work until michaelm (thanks to him) found a bug, actually stating it was NOT wad. Ridicoulos, when you read all the praise about it on pages and pages of threads just to find out in the end that the oh so great developer was wrong about it.

and the stupidity goes on but that´s surely something to be explained by the oh so great combat pilot that got shot at in real life... 21Tojos, at least they were all dived on, otherwise our fighters would have been again shot to pieces... that way we only lose 3:1 vs the Tojos but the really funny thing is that 133 fighters are held off the bombers by 20 escorts... not one of our fighters got a shot at the bombers... yeah, realism is shining out of the developer´s arse, 177 Allied fighters with 70 skilled pilots against the amazing number of 46 Japanese fighters (21 of them being on escort) and you end up losing 33 fighters for 3 or 4 enemy fighters... mhmm... 5 or 6 Tojos were shot down by the diving Lightnings on sweep during the day...

as a side note, the damaged bombers were damaged by "flak" (as no fighter got through the Tojos) but there is NO flak in this hex... that´s only a funny way of FOW that happens all the time... with all the potential the game has, it constantly comes up with more ridicoulos results than WITP and that should only show us how well WITP worked after all...

thank god the enemy attacks Rangoon and not the combat eng unit in open terrain... all fighters were flown out or being railed to Mandalay... with the higher flying Japanese fighters I guess I would need 8000 fighters in Burma to have a chance... senseless, have to wait for P-47 in mid 43, they can fly higher than any Japanese fighter which means payback time at the same ridicoulos kill rate we suffer when engaging the enemy with the "low flying crap" we´ve got...

we fail again but at least take down another fort level... damage done to the defender wasn´t great either... looks like Munda turns out to be a far tougher nut to crack than expected... already used to not getting any multipliers, the fact that we´ve got 100% preparation doesn´t mean anything I guess... got no explanation for our adjusted av...

this contruction btn moved onto the trail between Lashio and Paoshan which blocks supply flowing into China... only remained there for two days and is kicked out today... since we´ve liberated Burma, some 250,000 supplies have flown into China, so much about the supply routine... I still wonder why AndyMac is always calculating in his AAR how much supply he can get overland to some place, as a dev, hasn´t he figured out that he can draw infinite supplies to his troops? Mentioned it dozens of times already, but that´s ignored obviously...
