Imperial HQ
Japan

herbiesan contemplates the vast map of the empire. Where is the allied attack going to fall?
The enemy has let slip that THE OFFENSIVE -is delayed -a fuel/logistics hiccup according to the intercepts -but it helps him not.

The Alutiens?
Possibly. But a hard place to support -and a route guarranteed to send the Empire into a frenzy. Nothing would be spared if they attack there.

Marcus?
Also very possible -could those cursed B-29's be based from there?
if so -a terrible threat too.

Malaya
Nicobar island certaintly was being pounded -would the British risk the betties there?
yes -he thinks they would -when the main blow falls elswhere. It would be what he would do.

The DEI?
Inviting. But oh so many Japanese airfields to fight back from. Some how herbiesan thinks this is less likely

The pacific route?

If it walks like a duck, looks like a duck, quacks like a duck.................
Truk hammered
200-300 heavy enemy bombers in theatre
far too many SS
And those B-29's hitting everything in the area.

maybe that persistant cantona does not have to be subtle after all. Maybe the steamroller really is just going to keep coming .........

herbiesan considers Yamamoto's plan.
It has merit
It is also terribly risky
Five or 6 options to the enemy, and he with only one answer. Yamamoto only fights for the personal glory -this herbiesan now firmly feels. But if he gets this right - eternal fame.

get it wrong...................

"I will never surrender, not in a million years. Not in ten million. I will make a million American Mothers wish I had never been born first.............."

Three sentai's operate from Bangkok.
Again, as it should be for such an important city, the field is large, well supported, protected by many guns. The ground crews are still proffessional, the supplies good.A good smattering of trucks and cars -even three mobile cranes, ease a little the intense work load.

Yet today, as Juni looks down on the field, he cannot but brood on what once was, what is, and what seems to be coming.

how many great big fields had they "defended to the death" now?
How many were in allied hands now?
And now here in Thailand -it was happening again. Rahaeng,, lauembrang, or what ever the hell they called it -tavoy, Crap, the whole damn lot of them.
First the high level raids, that wear the men and machines down, no killing, just fatigue. Then the sweeps- to take the numbers down. And finally, the bombers -and the slope slides away, first the shops, the vehciles get destroyed, the support fades -and the whole damn business of getting into the air gets harder, and harder.

And then, inevitably -the blows that close the field, turn it into another moon.

Damn them. Damn the mind behind it all.

How are they going to stop this?
Juni knows Nakamura has tried it all - what was there left to try?.

Rumours abound of sentai's turning away from the fight, of pilots "going missing" all over the front.
But not here. Juni knows this. Not the 47th. Not him
He still knows the way to stop the imperiallists.
keep killing them
keep making them bleed

Let them know -this will go on forever if need be.
he, Juni -will never stop fighting.

They straggle in all afternoon, battered, patched, fading. These zekes have seen serious busines, the pilots, each and every one of them, darkly shadowed, strained, weary to the core. They climb out of cockpits, old, old men. It is a sight the veterans of 47th know so well, for they have been there too at times. These men have seen the elephant

The bombers have overwhelmed Rahaeng - shattering this sentai in the process.
Now they seek shelter here at bangkok -if shalter can be given

Nakamura watches them silently - and Miyazuki watches Nakamura. he watches the care, the worry, the pain on his face as each zeke wobbles down -some blood splattered. "Like a father watching his children", he thinks, and wonders that after so much -so many deaths -that he still can.

A final Zeke stutters to a halt, and a young Officer climbs out -his face wooden, and white.
nakamura marches forward, stops. And as stiff as if on the parade grounds of the palace itself - salutes, and bows.

He offers his hand.
For a moment the younger man stares at it in wonder -and Miyazuki can almost read the thoughts going through his mind -how can I be greeted, saluted, when I have been defeated?, when I still live?

And Miyazuki feels the moment, knows it so well. Knows his Japan. Heavens, before Nakamura, before the 47th -he too would have found that hand -that humanity -incomprehensible too.

The young man stares, and stares at the hand, then reluctantly shakes his head, no, and silently marches past the still nakamura, and disapears into the mess.

Miyazuki cannot stop the thought. A dead man walking.
nakamura turns, and he seems to deflate -the shoulders drop -but for a moment. The eyes -still glitter -and they catch his
"damn this to hell Miyazuki - one defeat does not make a war. Damn the orders. I'm going to do something about this"

Zeke unit morale -22!

"So thats how it is?"
'Thats how it is" -the engineer grimaces

Captain Hara contemplates the new scenery, the new planes being loaded to replace those lost over Aitape.
Incredible - this mad dash -and now we wait -for the tankers, for fuel. None here.
Not a drop.
Incredible

Yamamoto is gambling much. If he gets it right - a great chance to strike a terrible blow. Guess wrong - and how many heads will herbiesan leave?

"Alright then Chief -do what repairs you can do in a day -but don't take down anything you can't put back together in a flash. I have a nasty feeling we will be back in the thick of it any day now"
The Engineer nods in agreement. It des not take many brains to gather that the war moves towards its great climax.

from the beginning, it all goes wrong for Nakamura's plan today
The plan is simple -every plane in theatre will patrol above Rahaeng -and crunch the attackers.

He leads the very best of 47th into a grey sky - a sky who's horizon is only darker -and this darkness moving south.
The rain closes Moulmien - enemy bombers attack and disrupt Tavoy -and eleswhere -and so Nakamura finds "the mass CAP" already reduced.

they arrive nevertheless -and soon it becomes a race to the bottom -each lap of the circuit a little lower -the clouds a little closer -and darker.
Un tropical like -it really does begin to rain -real englishmans weather grunmbles Juni - as the rain beats on shields, beads across the screens.

Its terrible flying weather -and Nakamura has to face it -soon they are heading home again -winding and weaving between the clouds - the jungle at time terrifyingly close - was this a valley? -or the side of a hill?

In the end, it becomes a mad scramble just to get in -the field now a sea of mud and slush - and the wind blowing hard.

The wind blowing hard - just a few simple words - but as Miyazuki turns down wind every ounce of his experience and skill is being spent trying to tackle this wind -no, truk that-this gale that buffets and bounces him across the sky.

Its not the strength that he is fighting, its its direction, hard at pure right angles to the stip -and the rain is now a tropical burst -all but blinding him in a underwater cavern........

Down winf leg -flaps full -speed -Oh come on bitch! -settle -still cannot see any bloody thing -except! -oH CRUD! -a fighter cutting across his bow mere feet away - a violent manouvre -CRUD1- too close, too close -and now too low!, too low -where is strips end -????

there

I think..............

OK, stick hard over -into the breeze -ground speed bloody slow -airspeed too bloody high now - going past the end of it - and now it all happens very, very fast as he turns into the strip at 15000 feet -and the gale attempts to blow him into the jungle to his left.
Instant decision, he cannot see a thing -so - the canopy is slammed back - and a choice has to be made.

Two, well three choices if he decides to abort - choice one -point windside wing down and into the wind a little -nose hard into it -and "crab' into the strip - safer, but slower, longer -and wha t if the breeze should die suddenly -as it has before / and what of the visibility?

No -second choice -wing hard down -and nose a little up and opposite -a bit of cross stick -tricky -watch the side slip -but ayt least he can see....................

The field rushes up -throttle !! -and straighten -and down and Goddam! -so bloody wet - and she skids in the mud -a sense of rolling on roller skates -the water sheeting from the wheels ................

Done it.

Piece of cake.

As if.................

Miyazuki gets down oK - a lot don't -too many bounce -too many skid -three simply blindly run off the strip and into ditches.
No one hurt -by some miricle - but Nakamura's little trip has seen 14 planes damaged in 47th sentai alone.
Until the end - Nakamura's plan has gone wrong

Karma.

Japan, 1944

"A quiet dictatorship" No obvious oppression, no brutal guards on every street corner, but a people slowly awakening to the fact that the great revolution is like fairy floss -full of promise -until the heat is applied.

Now - Japan in 44 is a people of the rumour -censorship lays its oppressive wieght on everything - but it cannot kill word by mouth.

Rumours - of people disapearing -in the night.
Rumours - of whole villages - gone. "I just cannot get in -they won't let anyone in"
Rumours - that "THE attempt' on the Emperor -was not what is reported
Rumours -that Northern japan is being bombed -denied strenously by the Ruling party ad nueseum.

But there is no hiding this today -the dictator cannot hide it.

They appear over Osaka at midday -just 5 great silver crosses.
They drop no bombs -just a rain of paper -a rain no censorship can wash away

'Surrender -Soon fire will fall from the sky on the Son of Heaven"

Extract from Shattering the Sword. A cantona production

Was it a mistake? History still debates it. The shock of the B-29 over Osaka was meant to ram home the reality of the war.
But to threaten to "rain fire on the Son of Heaven" -over Osaka - the Emperors ancient home -over the spiritual heart of Japan -could only be interpreted by Japans people one way

A death threat at their God.

Those pieces of paper are harmless in themselves
How far they drove peace from Japans heart, history still argues over.
Words -the most deadly of weapons...........

there is no glint, no glee in his eyes.
Not today
Just grimness.

And age - God, we are all getting so old, Juni thinks, so old, and gray, and worn. Nakamura gathers them, and 39 pairs of eyes give him everything.

"pack your crap. usual drill, usual crap. We are going -don't know where. Don't know why. But we are going"

And as usual for the 47th, thats how it is.
They pack their crap -no regrets, no doubts.
And follow their leader to wherever Japan needs them now........................

47th continue yet another march across the shrinking empire
The men have have slept little, eaten even less - and it is before dawn when they climb wearily into the cockpits for todays transit.
Juni, Miyazuki are both about to leave the mess, when the secret police step into their paths.
two little men. Plain, non descript. The usual. As pure evil usually looks .
'A few words, if you don't mind"
Nakamura see's them from his cockpit -he can but grimace.
He slams his canopy shut, and throttles his engine to full whilst Juni gestures helplessly.
Eyes meet -and the messages are clear................

Juni bristles -how dare these little men get in their way.
"Actually, we do mind, little man, we have a flight to catch"
The answer is cold, and it too bristles with menace -a menace both parties know that can actually be backed up.
'Not today you don't -if you don't mind, the mess will do................"

The interview -if that is what you want to call it -meanders all over 47th's record of the war -its actions, its deployments.
Its losses

Its Miyazuki who catches on first - the topic turns to a certain dead pilot -a Iwaya, how was he viewed by everyone?
What did they know about his back ground?
Was it true that "he could get things?'

For a moment, Juni remembers all those bottles of scotch..............and then he finally notices the face on the little man -now very, very interested - "and what of Nakamura's relationship to the Iwaya family?"
And of course -this is not about mere bottles of scotch, and other 'begotton things' - this is about nakamura -and Iwaya -the traitor...............

And just what did these little barsteds really know?
What threat to the commander?

The little men finish, apparently pleased.
"You are free to go"

The two little men climb into a black car -and drive through the gates, in a cloud of dust
Juni, Miyazuki watch them go -an empty feeling in their bellies.
They don't know how, but somehow they KNOW they have implicated Nakamura -for Juni, its the same feeling he has at his chess games whever his opponent calls checkmate in three -and he can't, as usual, see it.

They have given up something that should not have been given up
What?
It does not matter -something dangerous .

But, this time, he can, truk it, will do some thing about it.

The great engine starts with a blast, and he savagedly jams the throttle forward -and its gear up almost the moment he clears the field.
He climbs hard, winging over, and heads north - and the black car comes into view almost at once.

This will need timing
Almost at once he see's it, the road takes a curve between two low hills - low jungle/brush to each side -and no cultivation, and no houses.
Or witnesses....................

For Juni, it is too easy.
A single swift pass -almost exhilirating down below the hill line, a single burst -and the little car disintergrates -plowing off the road in a cloud of dust, fire, smoke and blood.
If, when it is found -another T bolt victim.

Nakamura radio's them later that evening
'Yes, replies Juni -all is well - 6 planes down for the usual injector problems -no, the interview was nothing, about nothing, nothing to worry about.
No -just the usual problems -but we will see you tomorrow........

Ulithi bombed by those damn B-29's
Woleai pounded
Kuala Lumpar bombed -again
And Toyohara as well.
Just where could these bombers not reach?

It is dusk -the sun setting into the haze, and the dark shadows of 47th sentai slip once again towards the ground.
This is a new field, one that they have never been to before - a big field, wide, compacted gravel, some concrete around the hangers -which amazingly appear untouched.

47th are not the only planes arriving, naval bombers, Army fighter bombers -and the field boasts the usual grab bag of zero's -some new, some distinctly battered.

The men really don't care however -they are too tired, too stiff, too sore.
They will eat, and attempt to get some sleep.
let tomorrow bring what tomorrow will bring...................

Might be judicious for Juni to see to it that sentai records are doctored so as to conceal the expenditure of ammunition on a transfer flight. Although a single burst could be attributed to testing guns, best not to leave a paper trail.

Hi Local Yokel

many thanks for the posting - very encouraging!. I know a few follow story -but not sure which bits most find interesting.
I do know the damn thing has taken a mind of its own though...........LOL

I do believe that cantona might FINALLY be about to do something substantial !
he is pressing in Northen China, central China -but besides pounding Truk to scrap -little else is happening -burma is quiet, PNG, he bombs a lot, Timor is bombed every day -but its too quiet!

Hope, very much hope to bring mighty action soon.
PS -my bag of tricks not empty yet !

Command briefing

47th Sentai
At #$#$#@#$

1st May, 1944

I won’t muck about. This base is in enemy air dominated space. All pilots are to complete orientation flights by 0900 hours –nobody –repeat nobody is to fly in formation of less than five aircraft at a time.

Any enemy aircraft are NOT, REPEAT not to be engaged unless absolutely un avoidable – we must maintain element of surprise.

Our purpose here is simple –the enemy B-29’s are operating to our west. These terror bombers are attacking the homeland itself.
Our task is to support Army bomber efforts against this threat.
These bombers attack our families, our children. Nothing exceeds our duty to stop this threat to them.
Once again 47th is called upon “to plug the hole”
Again I hold total confidence in 47th’s ability to perform its duty.

Col Nakamura

There is a dangerous atmosphere in the sky today. Hard to articulate, but you can taste it in the air, feel it in the muted conversations, see it in the faces of the pilots gathered here.
You can sum it up –this anger –like this.
Japan never went to war against America –it chose to liberate the peoples of Asia from the white mans yoke –specifically, the British mans yoke.
This is why Singapore was struck…….
Has a single bomb landed on American soil?
Has a single American child been threatened?
Has Japan ever threatened to remove their very way of life?

And yet, now those Imperialists “bring freedom”
They bring “democracy”
Whatever the hell that is..
Few here believe in the Herbiesan dictatorship, that is true.
But all would die for the emperor.

Or for the children.

The B-29 – the ultimate in cold technology –the anathema to the Bushido way, terrorises their own children, their own homes.
A brood of them lies to the east –arrogantly assuming safety.
Here –at #$%^%$# , a growing hatred vows revenge.

Captain Umeya looks upwards at the Jolly Roger raised with such high hopes several weeks ago.
It still flies there, under the sunburst –but it is a shadow of its former glory –faded, tattered.

A little like his hopes.

His carrier struggles over the next swell, slides into the trough, shudders as it meets it.
The spray explodes, flinging back in the wind –biting cold, stinging.

His heavily clad crew struggle with the fuel hoses, another fifteen minutes of precious life yet to be transferred.
He looks upward again –past the flags, scanning the sky –empty of life.
For now
How long before the dots appear – the dive bombers, the torpedo bombers.

Umeya began his career as bait for Yamamoto –as a lure. It led to a nasty swim.
The waters swell again, dark, grey, angry, she crashes into them again.
And cold
Somehow –swimming this time, he thinks, is not going to be too inviting……….

2/5/44

The enemy do not disturb 47th today –and this is welcome.
By dusk, every plane available is ready.
Tomorrow the hunting begins.

Extract from ‘Fighting the Tide” by Col Nakamura

“Where is she?. Why no mail? My mind, my nights, are filled with nightmares.
Has she had an accident?
Has the secret police taken her too?
What can I do to ease my mind?
What torture –to know that one of these betties here could swiftly return me to Tokyo –and let me find out what has become of my wife.

I am filled with longing for home. Filed with the need of a Husband to protect his wife. To keep her safe.
But crushingly aware, that its through my duty –fighting the enemy, that I can do the most good.
But the pain remains…

Miyazuki watches them in frustration.
A silly emotion, a stupid emotion, he really should be thankful that he has gotten back down safely. Injectoritis -his turn to suffer that terrible loss of power, that horrible vibration, the shovelling smoke.

The Gale is powerful -its power plant beginning to show vulnerabilities now that it is getting the hours under its belt.
Miyazuki canbut watch -he pulls the canopy back -and takes it in

Nakamura again leads them low, and fast across the field - a master of "putting on a show". It is something that he never does consciously -it just happens.

70 heavy fighters sweep north, above, but only a little, 34 Nicks and 40 plus betties beat the sky -that deep heavy rumble of menacing power.

Soon they are gone -target today, Ichang.

Miyazuki is too despondent to even quip the mechanics -he makes his way to the mess, takes his lounge chair, his paper, and waits

The paper is rubbish -no real news -simple exhortations for sacrifice, for greater effort.
A leader again threatening to punish slackers, traitors and profiteerers.............

The day passes slowly - he makes a new friend -the base dog -a real mutt - friendly -but flea riddden.

Finally, the return
The hunting has been good -No franks lost. 3 bombers missing -probably to Flak.
6 Confirmed kills in the air, 5 on the ground.
47th now have 132 kills total.

Even Nakamura's old smile makes a come back. Japan may have been driven from the skies elsewhere -but 47th still dominate their particular patch.

Captain Umeya considers the angry seas for yet another dawn
Another day of cat and mouse.
To the east -the Alutiens, Attu, and the rest.
His orders-given by Yamamoto himself -are very un Japanese like
"poke around -see what you can find, stir em up"
Now, it appears, something "has stirred up"

For three days now, his Torpedo bombers have overflown some of the allied bases, noting a scattering of AP's, Aks, but few real warships.
Now, braving the rough seas, a flottilla of PT boats are coming West...........

What does Yamamoto require?
In fact where the damn hell is the Admiral?

His signal officer brings the eagerly awaited orders.
Retire.
Move to area $%$#@!
Keep poking.

The trouble being of course, poke enough times - and something is bound to bite back.
But where?

47th sweep north again
Today -target Honan

Northern China is now active, after two years of boredom, of trench foot rot, of gazing at sleeping Chinese trenches, the Northern Imperial Army now falls back against a tide of fresh, now resupplied chinese troops.

The thrusts are two in number -one towards Yanghu - the other against Nanchang
Nanchang will hold -this the Army feels it can do - Yanghu is probmatic.

It calls for help............

47th, Nakamura, his Tigers, chew up the enemy airbase, nobody home, nobody flying CAP
The Bombers do good work -and there is much satisfaction watching well maintained mess halls, accomodation buildings being blasted into matchsticks - for men who have lived in tents, under crude canvas for many months, a particular pleasure to share...............

The base is left a column of fire.
Two bases struck in 4 days

Nakamura, too -is poking with his stick.
And like Umeya , he too wonders -how big a counter stick will the enemy bring

47th strike Sian -another low level attack, indistinguishable to the last two.

More hits, more burning buildings, more straffing runs.
All "good stuff"
But the main target -the enemy B-29's -are not home.

Where the hell are they nesting now?.

Agarshi, Shimto linger on Ryujo's Port companion way
Breakfast is finished, by tradition the stokers will gather here for last smokes, last tea, a last look at the sea and sky, before descending to below.

The weather is fair, the seas smooth - broken by the Vee's of dozens of ships wakes.
Forenoon watch.
Easiest for sleep.
Worst to be on in battle -forenoon watch on a carrier is almost guarranteed to be below in battle - the decks will have been emptied of your strike -the enemies bound to be incoming.
This is war -where your fate may be decided by a watchbill.

Above them, on the flight deck, a full strike of engines rumble -warming up, waiting for any word from the search planes.
All AA guns are manned, and hundreds of eyes join the radars seeking any sign of the enemy.

Rumours are flying about now - at even greater rates than normal.
Enemy transmissions -at French frigate shoals, at Wake.

Many transmissions at wake

Agarshi flicks his butt over the side "what chance Shimto?'
"that today is the day?"
'yes"
Shimto is a close friend of one of the stewards, his opinions sometimes actually have facts behind them, not wild assumptions " Maybe, more likely tomorrow"

But then, below them, as they stand, and begin making their way below, the unmistakable sound of blowers rising to maximum RPM, and the trembling of the little carrier beginning to accelerate

'But then, maybe not"

They pass below, into number two engine room.
Below the hanger deck, the mess decks, and the waterline.

Extract from "Shattering the sword" a Cantona production

The first allied airstrikes against marcus, arrived exactly on time -overwhelming the small float plane CAP.
Surprise was complete -there anyway.

But it is Japan that launches the real surprise, half a world away

CVL Ryujo's unsescorted strike of 22 Dive bombers arrive totally unopposed over the packed shipping of Colombo port -a port with No CAP aloft.

Despite the heavy Flak, the bombers can take their time
CVE Shah takes two hits
CVE Begum another
CV Forminable the last one

The American president has in his weekly broadcast, boasted that "many divisions are on the move, and the ships to take them, are in situ'
For the Japanese pilots, those that survive this small raid - there is no doubt looking at the over 100 ships crammed into the waters around Colombo -that these are the ships.

For Yamamoto - the evidence is in
Marcus, he declares -is but the decoy.
The Mobile fleets get their orders.........................

Dusk
CVL Ryujo
Again our two stokers prepare to go below.
Ryujo remains at full speed now -sailing for her very life
The poking stick has reached into the bears lair at colombo -and found far more than it ever expected.
The two men go below, knowing that for the next four hours at least, one failure of their machinery, or from them, will be the death of everyone...

Captain Hara too reads Ryujo's report

"100's of ships"

is it possible to gather 100's of ships? he wonders
For the Allies, probably, yes.

He looks over Akagi's long, long deck, at the waters sliding below.
"Well old girl, at least the wondering is over now -now we know what we fight"

And strangely enough, noww that he knew, now that the decisions were made -he felt good. At peace.
Genda arrives on the bridge
"A lot of work ahead of us ney?"
Genda grimaces 'As always with Yamamoto - it looks like all or nothing" The aviator straightens, formally salutes "My attack plan sir for when we encounter "
Hara glances at it -only one figure matters -the CAP percentage................

47th have a busy day

If the job is to locate and disrupt the B-29's bombing Japan, then today is a total success
Juni eyes the great bombers brutally advancing towards the field -32 strong -arrogantly at 18000 feet.
'they are not bombing children today -today they are trying to bomb us."
And 47th means to show them that today they face something different to the rookies and riff raff assigned to the Home island sentais.............

Nakamura leads them high, tracking them -the attack though must come quickly -such is the rate of advance of these big birds.
his voice crackles over the net -still cool, calm. He might be ordering a meal......... " all fighters attack"
'With pleasure" murmers Juni -and the dive commences.

This attack has been endlessly debated in the mess -what approach -how to avoid the guns........and however you look at it -Nakamura's knife remains the best chance.........

Stick, rudder, hard over, inverting, diving, down, head back, back, the bombers floating, up, up up to you as you scream down almost vertical now -and how sweet the sound of CANNON, real cannon now --and the flashes all over the big body, and past, and down, and spin, and pull up -pull up ahead of the wounde beast, turning in hard, flashing across the bows of the formation, and hitting the outer wing man head on, another crashing, banging pass, and diving away,, work done.

1 B-29 goees down , 20 turn back - but 9 still hit hard - 3 betties will never fly again
the field is crated too -but there are coolies enough -always there are coolies enough.................

47th have 133 kills now.
but more importantly., the b-29 can be tackled.

"if it cannot be killed, it is still good enough to drive it off".

deepi in his underground lair, the Dictator herbiesan reads todays combat reports.

he knows what they mean Vis a vis the fleets current deployment
he knows what Ryujo has found
he utters but a single word

Yamamoto, he knows, is going to have a tough time recovering from this..............
