the chase for the USN netted more victims. First, at night another mid-ocean battle folded since we sent battlegroup 2 with two fast BBs, two CAs, two CLs and nine destroyers to the site of the air raids the day before. And -surprise- we ran right into several USN formations and fought it out with them. At least 10 enemy DDs were sunk and many more ships badly shot up. Our own ships suffered some damage too, one DD had to be scuttled (with another probable), one BB heavily burning from numerous 8" shells & limping back to the Shortlands plus one CL "met" a mine... But overall, another great night battle amidst the vast seas south of Guadalcanal. What a nautic achievement by our skilled men!
At day, A/C took off to deliver another pounding. HORNET is reported sunk, and regrettably many bombs & torpedoes were flown thru the air in vain since targets had slipped beneath the waves already...
Again, our submarine force contributed alot to this great success. The second battle south of Guadalcanal was a decisive victory to the Empire of Japan.

Thats pretty hard. I remember that B-17 have a very low replacement rate.I used them for key operations only....
