Does this take place against on-board artillery or must you direct fire manually at smoke puffs as seen on the battlefield? Just wondering if it was an off-board kinda thing or if it applies to both... CJ

I don't know about the "other side", but I've laid fire on the smoke hexes on the map, just to see what happens. Results ambiguous.

CAS will spot enemy onboard arty, then you can start pounding them, did so just last night. Offboard is somwhat iffy, as I understand the process you must have an arty section which has not been assigned a target, has ammo and is in operating condition. Then, maybe, the game engine will lay fire on the enemy offboard, but I haven't seen this happen very often.

I find that this happens fairly often. But then, I haven't played online or pbem yet...just against the AI. This is especially when I have guns of 150 mm and larger. I will try to buy at least one 8 inch battery (I'm playing the US Army right now) or several 155mm. If I don't pick a target for them, usually they do alright by me. Few things lighten the mood more than reducing the amount of big stuff falling on you. However, German 81mm morters...that's another jar of pickles. I agree with REMF's statement about shooting at smoke puffs. I usually try to get someone back there to find the morters (usually)and call in arty from there. I have no hard data to support this, but... It seems that in games where I allocate a signifigant chunk of resources to counterbattery activites, my forces have an "easier" time in reaching their objectives. [QUOTE]Originally posted by Lou: [B] I find that this happens fairly often Excellent observations, Lou. I agreee 100% This strategy works well in PBEM too. Another tip when laying smoke from large guns: Switch off two of your guns. You will suffer Fewer weapon malfunctions and preserve smke ammo for later. 150's lay too much smoke in one barrage so I find it safe to do this.

Bing, when you say "CAS will spot enemy onboard arty", how do you know? Does it show up on the map? Does it target it? Fill me in a little on this. CJ

Cap'n Jack: Let's put it this way: Per usual, no idea where the German 81mm stuff was originating. After a couple of passes by flyboys, I happened to be scrolling to the bottom of the map and Voila! There they was, AND the nasty 120mm mortar popped into view. Next airstrike went all out for the 120, and I had my 81mm HT mortars pound their German counterparts. The original pass was against armor, but they DID fly directly over the 81's. Since I didn't have recon that far west or south the only conclusion I can draw is it had to be the CAS done it. Doubt if the game engine did this becuase of my good looks, or simply because it liked me. Lou: Thanks for the arty tips, I'm going to try the big stuff, for the first time actually attempt to plan for counterbattery fire. Love those big guns, Signed, Former Artillery Person 75th AAA Missile Battalion, SIR!!

In the newest version, in addition to making it happen less frequently, the effect of off-map counter-battery fire has been lessened to almost nothing: It makes the receiving battery rout for 2 or 3 turns (during which you'd most likely be out of contact with it anyway). It never kills men and (practically) never blows up ammo. Very infrequently (like every twentieth CBF) one gun may lose it's ammo. Now, I don't doubt that this is realistic and maybe the whole concept of CBF doesn't belong in SPWAW's scale, but it sure isn't a good choice gaming wise. There just isn't any motivation to buy artillery to counter your opponent's artillery, no motivation to leave your guns unassigned because they'll never do anything tangible even if they do fire, and no fear of your opponent's guns in assigning your bombardment missions. Note that when I critisize the current modelling, I think it's still an improvement to the earlier CBF which wiped out receiving battery's all ammo on the first firing. I just think that there must be a golden middle somewhere.
