ORIGINAL: JWE My friend Dewey Atchley's uncle Dewey died recently and we up at his place in Big Bear this weekend to finish up an inventory. We're in the garage with all the frikkin tools and a big lump of something at the back; covered with blankets and wrapped in visquine, it looked like a mini VW stuck in the corner. So we cut the covers and there, covered with 15 years of rust and grime is a serious Norton frikkin bike. We had no clue, we just saw Norton and went - hoe lee jay zus! We went and looked and it was a 1975 Norton Commando. It was seriously ugly and grimey and Dewey didn't want to pay the freight to restore it sellability, and Dewey's wife unit is a true, it better be a Volvo, Cali girl, so Dewey says - "oh, crap, this is all I need. John, you want this thing?" "erm, hunh?" says I, using my communication skills. "look" says Dewey, "this things a piece of crap, and Caroline won't let me spend a penny on restoring it, and some collector yahoo will only give me a penny on the dollar and laugh at me for a fool for doing it. You want it?" "Umm .. fuh%# .. Dewey, are you frikkin nuts !? Do you know what this is !?" my communication skills return somewhat. "Yeah" says Dewey, "it's a piece of $hit in my uncle's garage. You want it or not?" Communication skills fail yet again. " cough, choke, uhhh .. um .. ok." So I got this Norton in my garage now. Had to move the Jeep to make some room. Really lookin forward to getting it fixed up and fired up. Will be thinking of big Dewey (and little Dewey) every time I ride it. I say again...a strategic and tactical victory!
