My name is Robert Crandall and I'm the lead developer for Flashpoint Germany. Not too many people will have heard of me (well, no one really) so I thought I'd introduce myself and get the ball rolling.

I bought my first computer in 1978 (Apple 2+ with 48k RAM) and the second thing that I did with it was to start writing wargames. 24 years later and I'm still doing it (some people never learn...) albeit on an evenings and weekends basis. My day job writing HR software sucks - not nearly enough creativity involved - so I putter about with a string of titles that I have been researching and programming for years. During one glorius period I managed to release three titles with Simulations Canada and I thank the several dozen people out there who purchased them.

Like many, my ears perked up when I learned of the new relationship between Matrix and SimCan last fall. A casual inquiry via Paul Webber as to how it was going translated with blinding speed into a contract to bring the MBT Germany series back to life. (Visualize a deer pinned in the headlights here.) Mercifully, David Heath and Steven Newberg of SimCan were both wonderfully supportive (but not actually terribly fussy about how I went about it) and progress has been swift. I can say it was a genuine delight to finally see all the original C source code for Central Germany and Northern Germany and really come to appreciate the many subtleties involved. I hope that I can do justice to the original design. (Flashback to deer here.)

Steven, bless him, has a remarkably clear memory of the design issues that occured 13 years ago and is able to keep me on track. Those of you who know the original games will find a lot that looks familiar. Of course there have been a few changes too - DOS text mode (remember that?) is banished forever and David has allowed me considerable freedom to exploit the graphical interface to the hilt. Check out the coming screenshots to see what I mean.

This will be a collaborative effort so the esteemed Iain Christie will be highly involved with the maps and the very capable Marc S will be (re)doing a lot of the UI graphics. We will also get expert help for populating the database and setting up some killer scenarios. We want to make the user-created scenarios a particular strength of the game.

My mandate, broadly speaking, is to bring the SimCan MBT series back to life. The original games as published constitute my detailed specification but I can press on into new areas where actual events have revealed new interpretations or where the limiations of the computers of the era prevented a detailed treatment. Interpreting this somewhat liberally, I feel that I have pretty wide latitude with the game. My desire is to focus on the integrity of the player viewpoint and create a fast moving game that is full of surprises and can swing either way right to the very last turn. I do _not_ want an exercise in micro-management or 'ultra realism' that eviscerates game play. There is a place for that, of course, but I consider that to be a Simulation (another market entirely) and I'm working on a Game!

In light of all this, feedback is desired and appreciated! Steve and David are the final arbiters of the feature list of course, but I am keen to consider any reasonable suggestion that comes along that fits the existing concept. This will doubtless be a long range project, so there is ample scope for useful changes beyond the first release. Matrix takes the long view and we will want to keep this title going a long time....

Anyway, it's time to return to said boring day job. I look forward to the future and conversing with many of you about this exciting new title in the months to come.

Cheers all, Rob.

Great to be aboard :D.

Robert, I may actually have been one the several dozen if Long Lance was one of your games. I purchased and played it endlessly on my Atari back in the mid 80's.

Anyone who knows the SimCan games knows they were pretty rudimentary in the graphics department (not that it mattered much in those days!) so the door is wide open in terms of coming up with new concepts. Right now we are looking at generating a number of predefined maps which will span something like 20x20 km. We are hoping that the maps will be rendered to "look and feel" like satellite photos - we still need to figure out how to do that and make the map information unambiguous - so stand by.

Once Marc works his usual magic on the interface, I am betting that this will be a nice looking game. With the SimCan engine under the hood, I'm sure it will play well too.

Things on Flashpoint are definitely moving ahead. So get the word out. If your interested in cold war era brigade level combat - this is going to be a title to watch... and soon.

I know David. I also know that you must have become deathly sick of hearing me whine about these projects too.:D

Now I have a place to whine. Thanks

And having Iain aboard promises good things.

Now how is Schnellboote coming?

Just kidding;)

Hi

I had no idea what SimCan and their games was prior to the opening of the two new forums. It was very happy news and I look forward to both games. Since I did not play the original games it will be like two brand new ones for me.

Any other SimCan games that is planned to be remade and published by Matrix?

Dan

Hello Folks,

Well, after having to get a password again because, unlike 13 year old design issues, I could not remember it, I thought I would check in here. My firm originally published these games and I was involved in the design and development. I as assisting as needed to get them back going as updated systems with a new look and am extremely happy it is all going as well as it is. I will check in here every couple of days of so, so if anyone has any questions that are in my ballpark, toss them out and I will try to answer.

Steve,

Just out of interest and totally off topic... Where exactly is Crousetown?

Despite living in Upper Canada, I'm a maritimer at heart. I lived for 6 years in Halifax (served in 1RCA during that time) and the family Cottage is just outside of Amherst.

Hi Iain,

I am down on the South Shore, about 120 KM from Halifax. Very rural. Crousetown is about 17 KM almost due south of Bridgewater, just about to the ocean. If I look out the back window of my shop building on a clear day, I can see the river mouth of the Petite as it flows into Green Bay. In fact, the Petite River runs across two borders of my property down the hill a ways, on the near side of the actual main peice and on the island side as well, though for 11 months of the year the 'island' is really a chunck of the opposite shore since the backwater stream goes dry.

Should you make it back this way, let me know and you can drift down this way for a visit.

You're making me homesick :(. We don't get down that way nearly often enough, but if we do I'll be sure to give me a call.

BTW, were you involved at all in a simulation called "Polaris" back in the late 80's? I remember running a trial CPX using the system when I was with First Field. Just wondered if we might not have run into one another...

Hi Iain,

No, had nothing to do with POLARIS, thankfully. Back then I was doing some work on the NSSNXxxxx or whatever set of letters they were calling it at that point :) , plus a few other things.

If you do find yourself coming out this way, just let me know. There is always a chunk of floor to toss guests on (assuming they do not object to dogs, of course). :)

Well, its official, I will now have to go on the standard intergalactic day of, was it 36 hours?, in order to keep up with all of the new/old games that Matrix has brought back from the dead.

Don't feel bad, a lot of people didn't play the original games! I saw a couple for sale last month at Origins though and I gotta say that was a blast from the past!

To my knowledge there are currently two teams working on the SimCan catalogue right now. Games development can be tricky though - for every ten that are started only one is finished. (I think I read that in Gamasutra somewhere.) There were other conversion efforts attempted but apparently they came to naught. It takes tremendous dedication to make it through to the end.

I expect to be able to complete this game and then maintain and enhance it considerably over the following years. If I'm busy with that though then I might not be able to do any other titles. (Stupid day job, family, and need for sleep.) I know Matrix would like to to more games but getting dedicated programmers is a real bottleneck. If Flashpoint and Europa Fleet Actions do well though, we might see more volunteers step forward....

To waffle on your specific question, I don't know which titles Matrix would do if it had the manpower. Probably the modern operational naval ones - Red Sky at Morning (strategic modern naval) maybe? It also seems to me that Long Lance (WW2 tactical naval) would be a natural for multiplayer internet games. You could sign on, join a battle for half an hour and then get back to work refreshed and invigorated. AI bots could control the empty ships, and as you worked your way up the ladder you could command heavier and heavier units. There is lots of scope for voice interaction ('talk between ships') too that would make it really immersive. Note: these are just my personal musings and not Matrix planning!

Keep your fingers crossed for us,

Cheers, Rob.

I am very pleased after reading that you are working on new versions of some of the old SimCan games. I have played several of them for long periods with great enjoyment. Actually, I can run them in my dusty, but still working Apple II plus computer even today. I keep in good shape the boxes and colour maps which came with some of them. Somewhere I have many SimCan newsletters that I read every time with extreme interest.
Unfortunately, after so many years of visual interfaces and mouse clicking, I am unable to play those games again, so the update and improvements are most welcome!
Best regards,
Panta
