Here's a question that's been bothering me for a while... What keeps a tank turret on the hull? Once I was told that turrets are so heavy that they just sit there. That doesn't sound right. What keeps the hat on? Vice grips? Clamps? Armor Elves? Lou

Your tank experts would have to answer that one, Lou. I'm sure you'll get a reply. Very interesting question. I know there is something too, but what exactly...? I'll be watching for some answers...Wild Bill ------------------ In Arduis Fidelis Wild Bill Wilder Coordinator, Scenario Design Matrix Games

Well, kinda, theres a race, and ball-bearings, to ride on, and hooked up to the traverse, either hand cranked, or power. You've no doubt heard about the KV-II not being great at fighting on other than level ground, as the sheer bulk of it's massive turret on much of a grade would put a strain on the traverse, often binding it up!! Sometimes a brew up would literally 'throw off it's hat' on a tank, the pressure with the weakest point to escape tore a turret right off. ------------------ Mike Amos Meine Ehre Heisst Treue

Ditto here on Warhorses's message: Via TV, I saw an Iraqi tank literally have the turret blown straight up in the air during Gulf War. A friend of mine works on tanks, he said "You know how much tht turret weighs?". I said I thought I had an idea, and that most likely the ammo went off, for one dandy induced explosion. You had to see this one; flames shot out every vent and opening as the turret became airborne. Its the old KB factor: Ka-Boom!!!!!
