Hello. Lurking for long time, played Witp a lot. Just bought AE and looking here to see some things. There is lots of things that everybody says, but much of it is not right, whatever why, do not know or care.

Can people here help with a top 10 list of people who know what they are talking about and who a newby can listen and believe.

TY, Leafy.

I generally trust the developers; among whom are jwilkerson, jwe, Don Bowen, Andrew Brown, AndyMac, theElf, michaelm, TimTom, TankerAce, Blackhorse, Kereguelen, BigJ62, wdolson and Treespider. I'm sure that there are others whose names aren't coming to me at this moment.

The only advice worth listening to comes from... me, of course!

Seriously, questions about game mechanics are almost always answered correctly, and if not several people with point out errors. Topics related to tactics, strategy etc.. well, in many cases there are many opinions, and this game is sufficiently complex so that there isn't a simple right or wrong...

First of all, welcome to the forums!

Second, a question about whose answers you can trust brings up this question: how do you know you can trust the answers you get about whose answers you can trust?

I think bradforkay's answer is a good one, though, all kidding aside. And there are a lot of other knowledgeable and helpful people here. Remember that this is a very large and complicated game and if you ask ten people here a question you might get ten different answers, all of them accurate to some degree or another. It's kind of like the story of the five blind men trying to figure out what an elephant is. "Ah, an elephant is like a spear!" one says, encountering a tusk. "An elephant is like a tree," says another, encountering a leg. And so on.

Thank you. See these names before. Know now why they know when others do not. Will look for them now for answers.Thank you bradfordkay.

Short answer?  See Bradforkay's post.

Long answer?  Not everyone will agree about who to listen to.  Personality conflicts aside, people learn in one of four basic ways and the best teachers might be able to impart knowledge in three of those.

As to who you can safely ignore, My name will be at the top of the list.

When you post a question just remember to include your list of names so that the rest of us know enough not to answer.

Since no one who has replied in this thread so far is on the list, how can that list be reliably established?? All our replies could be nonsense!

I figured that the only way to keep personalities out of it was to list the developers only... there shouldn't be any claims as to bias in that listing.

EDIT: it doesn't mean that the rest of us do or do not know what we are talking about, just that he can rely upon answers from those guys. I know that I have posted good information and misinformation in response to threads in the past, and I am sure that the same can be said for everyone else.

I hate to say, but over the years there has been a lot of incorrect advice given over the forum. You will find threads talking about how the game works with several veteran players disagreeing widely over what is going on under the hood. It is not that silly of a question - even if it is a little insulting - to wonder as to whose answers might be the "real thing". This is why I gave the answer that I did, naming only those who were part of the team developing AE.

There is another word.. which begins with disre..... which will elicit responses similar to the Knights who Say Niii in Monty Python and the Holy Grail amongst the populace here. Methinks this is the basis for Msr.Bullwinkle's post.

As far as being able to glean information from respondents on this board - there is a healthy respect between most members on the board, but, I don't know if there will be a consensus on tactics, strategy, or what to have for dinner in most of our discussions.

Shalom;
Rev. Rick

Yes, you got it, sir!

I am sometimes too opaque. But the Mighty Moose is a late-comer to the Queen's English.

I think this is the most usefull forum I have ever seen.  Most things are discussed in an open format, and disagreements are almost always both civil, and based on some sort of reasoning ( weather you agree with it or not).

Don't worry about folks who "know what they are talking about".  If someone posts something incorrect, it usually gets a fast response from the rest of the forum.

IMHO, you might start by listening to advice from those who actually OWN a copy of the game...

Yes...in past, WITP has had critics and experts who freely admitted they had spent no more time around it than to cast a shadow near the monitor the play was being played on,(or similar words)..

Further, anybody can become an expert at the game, by owning it, and playing it.

The great folks you meet on this forum are just a bonus.

Welcome to the Pacific..

Get your feet wet.

Yep, I try to read every thread and pretty much have done so since I joined the forum back when UV was in development. Everybody has something to contribute and has a notion about how the game works. I filter it and then confirm it with my own experiences to see what works for me.  Some people know a lot but as far as I have seen nobody knows it all.

I will say this, there is no way to become truly competent at play unless you regularly read the threads on this forum.

There are personality conflicts here but this is one of the finest group of Historians and Strategists you couold ever speak with.  Find an AAR or two and read them through.  There is always lots of talk regarding strategy, tactics, and game mechanics within the AARs.

In a game this complex you have to realize that advice and thought on various topics can be very complex as well.  I've lurked on these boards for many many years (before signing up even, back to UV) - and you just have to learn personalities and judge situations.

Some people might have a lot of knowledge in certain realms, but have a bone to pick in others.  In fact, "a bone to pick" doesn't mean they are wrong, but does mean you might want to take into account that for this poster, say "art modeling" really bugs the crap out of them so they say "don't bother using them".  Should you listen to that person?  Yes.  Should you just stop using artillery? Probably not.

So, my thesis for you is this; in a complex game, you can't just have a few "right" people to listen to when even the folks involved in developing AE can't completely tell you what is going on in every situation.  In addition, situations are equally complex so there frequently are no simple answers.

I am also a new player to AE. These guys are giving u great advise. Read the posts, aar's, tech reports. Then make your own strategies. The AAR's are worth there wait in gold, everyone I have read has helped me understand the game. AAR's to read Nemo, John III and cpl others that I cant think of right now. The two best ways to learn the game from what I have seen is read the posts and play. But if you cross the line and play expect to loose all contact with the outside world besides the people on here.

Does this mean that if Spotsylvania had achieved statehood, the lingua franca of Frostbite Falls would have been...Mooseler. A bit like Quebec, just south of the 49th.

Now that I understand that the Queen's English is your second language, I can see why you are always expressing reluctance at reading the manual.

Alfred

PS: As a second language, your Queen's English is very good.

Insurrectio: One thing I've noticed on this board is that there is a lot of opinion, but not always a lot of fact, and the devs, who probably have much better things to do, don't always chime in. I wish I had more free time (hell, I should be working now), but one thing all of us could do that would be helpful is run empirical studies. By this I mean experiments where one variable is changed while the others remain constant. Some people have done such work and it is to be highly commended as it gives us a clearer picture of what's going on.

Cheers,
CC

Welcome, Insurrectio (and you, too, DOCUP, since I haven't addressed you in your month on the boards)!

All the advice given so far is good.  If you follow the boards long enough, you'll form your own opinion on who to pay attention to and who to tune out.  In the years I've been here, I've found three people I tend to ignore (and to all you cynics out there: no, Ron is not one of them!).  Many times you'll need to evaluate what each person is saying and decide whose answer you like best.  To use a friend's favorite phrase, even a blind squirrel finds an acorn some of the time.  In other words, nobody is always right and nobody is always wrong.

I always say ask a question and if someone answers incorrectly they will have a shiat storm sent their way, however this board has actually been pretty good in details
and information given. Funny I've been waiting for someone to simply explode, but haven't seen anyone do that since Japan did in the other board.

Well, I went to first grade in Scotland, so . . .

While I'm a native speaker, the Moose Who Speaks Through Me is not. Your suggestion of Quebec is not off the mark. A Moose has gotta roam . . .
