From the manual on page 167 we have -

"The coordination of air strikes is affected by how many Carrier aircraft are based in
the TF launching a strike. The chance of uncoordination is doubled under the following
circumstances:
»» Allied TF in 1942 and the number of aircraft in the
TF is greater than 100 + rnd (100).
»» Allied TF in 1943 and the number of aircraft in the
TF is greater than 150 + rnd (150).
»» Allied TF in 1944 or later or a Japanese TF at any time and the
number of aircraft in the TF is greater than 200 + rnd (200)"

What I am not understanding is the "md(100)" part.

Can someone clue me into what "md" stands for?

It's probably something obvious but it is just sailing right over my head.

random number between 1-100, it's actually spelt r.n.d. not m.d., I got caught out by it too.

Gah, I see it now. That looked so much like an "m". Thanks a bunch.

So I assume it is best to run single carrier task forces in 42-43?

I assume you're referring to the Allies? If so, yes, single CV TFs in '42.

Also, I'm not up to that time period in my game yet but I think come '43 you could pair a US CV and 2 CVLs together and still come under the limits.

I've switched to running 2 CV's together in 43. 150 + rnd(150) should average out to 225. Two of the proper carriers is 180 planes, so most of the time you shouldn't be penalized. I kinda wish we had more smaller carriers like the wasp we could switch around with. 90+75=165 and you'd be even safer. Or even 75+75=150 and never have to worry about going over.

I suppose using CV's + CVE's would be an option, but all of the CVE's are so damn slow.

In 44 it should average out to 300, so I'll switch to 3 carriers (270 planes). I wish the numbers were a little more lenient. I don't want to run little 2 carrier task forces for the whole war :/, but in 44 with 3 carriers even 30 under the average rnd number for coordination limits we'll still end up over it fairly often.

But then in the last month I've been really frustrated by my carriers, they havn't been very effective at all, so mebbe I'm doin it wrong lol.

I'm still new to the game (only been playing Allied vs Japanese AI for four months). -- What is the trade off (pros/cons) of coordinated strikes of two (one Carrier) task forces (same hex) as opposed to a single task force with two carriers?   I'm playing late Jan '42, and need all the cruisers/destroyers available for surface combat task forces & have combined Yorktown & Lexington into one TF (so far, I happy with their strike missions).

Historically (early '42), those TBD's had a terrible time coordinating with the faster/longer-legged SBD's.  So even a one Carrier TF (seems to me) would still have problems in massing a large single attack.

Thanks for any feedback that will help see the options.
