It just occurred to me that bigger ship designs such as cruisers have medical centers. Now I understand that medical centers in a spaceport increases happiness/development, however I don't understand what they do for ships. From the galactopædia:

"Medical centers also provide rapid healing for any troop aboard the ship or base"

As I understand "faster healing" means troops would reach 100% readiness faster, however to the best of my knowledge, there is no way for troops not to be at 100% readiness aboard a ship. The game refuses to load troops that are not at 100% readiness, and there is no mechanism I can tell that would otherwise make troops lose readiness aboard.

Does anyone know if medical centers currently have a purpose in a ship ?

Seems like a bug that could easily be addressed in a future patch. Perhaps you should mention this in the bugs part of the forum.

Cruisers are gigantic ships. Why not leave the medical facilities on there for role-playing value?

Or are you really trying to min-max 2 units worth of space on your ship? :P

Mostly I'm wondering if they have a purpose I don't understand, though I like to redesign all ships when I start a new game, from lessons learned previously.

Actually, most cruisers and capital ships (even destroyers) in a modern navy will have some type of infirmary, usually equipped with a small surgical capability for on board medical emergencies. It actually makes sense to have them on there even if there is not a true in game need. All ships should probably have at least a basic med center to be more realistic.

It's also worth noting that the medical facility components get much much larger as their abilities increase. If its just role-play value, and there is no solid benefit, then I totally agree with Shark7. I dont see why I would want a "small hospital" on every single one of my destroyer-sized troopships ;)

I'm wondering if anyone has actually even tried this?

Under the Components list, the Medical facilities are listed as "Life Support", so I'm wondering if they don't actually fill part of this demand.

Double-checked it. They do not appear to fill the demand of "life support modules", and neither do Colony Modules or Repair Modules...

Still requiring one on a ship for the purpose of taking up space isn't a bad idea. Might help balance things a bit better when you can't stuff quite so many guns on it.

Maybe if you put a ship with a med center into orbit the troops on the planet heal faster.

Well I just wish that you could load damaged troops and let them heal on-board, its a pain to wait for the troop to heal...

If we look at the parrallel of modern marine assault ships such as the Uss Iwoa Jima deployed to Haiti after the quake, there should be a requirement to have a mdedical module for each troop loading module. In addition the presence of the ship should either heal a percentage of troops on the ground each round, or simply give a combat multiple to reflect this. Looking at the USS Iwo Jima has a 600 bed sugical hospital capable of deploying multiple mobile hospitals on the ground. Seems to me an assault force should have parrallel capability.

Well, it could be argued that in the current build of the game that this medical role is already covered by the troop modules themselves, since medical modules really only effect starports. It would be great to see something like what you are describing implemented in the game, though, giving bonuses to players that make the efforts in their ship designs...

I think by the time when interplanetary war occur, the hospital module will become very important in your troop transport design. Why? To improve the mobility of your fleet.

Just thinking, you build 2 troop transport ship with 8 troops inside, then attacking the enemy planet. After conquering it, you need to heal your troop fast in order for your fleet to keep mobile. So at the time like this, you just put your TT ship above the planet to heal your troop before you load them into the ship again.

Is THAT how it works? If so, man, I have been screwing that one up! Thank you Brainsucker
