is there a maximum x and y?

Current size is approx. 1874 x 2500 pixels.

...also, what's the maximum number of road/map connections for one map, if there's a max?

I don't think there is a maximum per individual map...well maybe 16, since that is the max VLs per map...Just a max total for the entire stratmap, which I believe is up to 256

CC:MT has some really HUGE maps. Basically you can DL the master map which was an amalgamation of the tactical maps put together. Basically the largest maps in CC:MT were 4 regular maps joined together. I don't know if that is the max or if it can still go larger and I don't know if CC:LSA is the same way or not but those were some BIG maps with CC:MT.

EDIT: Woops just realized you are talking about the "campaign map" and not the tactical maps. Sorry.
