I just sneak attacked my ally. I'm shooting at him, he's shooting at me. I want my ships to get out, and figure I'll just send them to refuel at the nearest point. Instead of heading for my outpost nearby, they head for his defense base... boom boom!

That's just... stupid.

For clarification, your ships were trying to refuel at your ally's base, which you were busy attacking?

The thought does occur, get your ships to his port. Have them refuel. Declare war, and let your ships sort out what to kill... At the very least, you don't take the rep hit for attacking your ally's ships/bases. Only a hit for moving from ally to war.

I might see heading to non-conflict systems to refuel, but I've also seen refueling at an independent colony put to very good use while fighting the pirates orbiting the same planet...
