Say guys, can anyone recommend some short, one volume histories concentrating on the SW Pacific? A friend of mine is teaching a class and needs some suggestions. Most anything I've read about that area was either a general history that covered the area (inclusive) one of a series -Morrison's volume, or a bio of Mac. Any thoughts?

Can't think of any. Lundstrom did one way back in the day but it only covers up to june 42 and it's out of print and super pricey. Bergerstom's well known tomb focuses only on air combat. You'd have to get "two" books to add the land component. The only one-volumes i know of in current print cover the entire PTO. (Caputo ; Tolland)

that must be one heck of a head stone

I remembered I have the Hornblower on DVD so dug that out. Then set into the vino again only to descover it's Spanish and wondered if I should watch Sharpe instead.

This is one of these naming thingies. Sometimes I wish the Aussies had names for all their species that noone else would use-Bandicoot, Wombat, Koala, etc.

In the United States, we have Opposums-(technically "Virginia Opposums"). Tthey are the only native marsupial in the United States. These have spread widely in CONUS throughout most states.

The Australian "Possum" is a 'true possum' (whatever that means) and looks very different. More akin to lemurs and gliders, if you ask me. It is also a marsupial. Interestingly, it was not native to New Zealand, but was introduced there. Hey Aussies-these 'possums' of yours were named AFTER the North American Opposums based upon their 'resemblance'.

Thus endeth the zoology lecture for the day.

Not so fast my friend. Recent research shows that the common ancestor of Australian and North American marsupials was from South America.

http://www.physorg.com/news199431266.html

For those who don't believe in plate tectonics, that was a long swim.

Maybe we can add a marsupial survey team to the game in one of those remote New Guinea sites armed with thick zoology textbooks in order to bludgeon the Japanese to death.

And the common ancestor of man is from the Rift Valley but I don't think they'll give me a Kenyan passport. Mombers is a good run ashore though.
