Hi-Scen.9, latest v, 12/16/42.

I have a Brit. CV scheduled for withdrawal in 20 days. Does she have to have her complete Air Group on board, or can I use, say, her VTs to good advantage elsewhere?

Thanks, Hugh Browne

That's a very good question actually.
Although I have never tried it I suspect that you can keep the whole airgroup and just withdraw this ship. If that is the case I would be careful about doing that in a PBEM as I would consider it gamey.

Unlike USN, the British air groups were not assigned to a specific CV thus I dont consider removing them gamey at all. In fact you have some FAA groups without CV's early in the game. I always take my FAA off prior to withdrawing. If the CV is due to come back, it will come back without planes and then I put the FAA back on. ymmv

Actually , that was only early in the war. After losses started forcing the USN to swap groups around (Like the Saratoga's group aboard Yorktown at Midway) the USN started using the airgroup/airwing concept that it uses to this day. An example is Enterprise would eventually be rated a "night carrier" and would embark "Night airgroup 90".

Nothing to stop you, I pulled all of the carrier groups off the larger british CV's that withdraw just to see if I could.

Awefully gamey imho though, even if groups arn't carrier specific. I would imagine the atlantic fleet admiral (or whoever) who's recalling those carriers wouldn't be too impressed if they all showed up with no airgroups.

Dunno why the airgroups don't have withdrawal dates to coincide with their ships. I kinda doubt if they were sent back to the atlantic devoid of aircraft IRL.

Sredni,

Great idea about the withdrawal dates matching, I have 2 units from a RN CV still in game, they flew off due to damage and the CV got withdrawn. There is a problem about them being "Independent" and not belonging to a specific ship, but that's a call I could accept.

It seems to me many folks strip quality pilots out of air groups prior to withdrawal and the same argument could be made that whoever was receiving that air group would not be too impressed when the air units showed up with all green pilots.

I do not see one being more gamey than the other. Either both should be acceptable or both gamey imho.

The pilots ... maybe. The planes ... yes.

Pilots rotated in and out for training. CV's showing up sans airgroups, would prolly make an HR on.

I think you are operating on a misunderstanding regarding what happens to pilots and planes of mandatory withdrawn airgroups.

When you withdraw (not disband) airgroups scheduled for withdrawal, which group also have a scheduled return date, the pilots and planes go into the pools with no further action from the player. Only those units with a "P", which indicates a permanent removal with no return date, lose both the pilots and airplanes in the group.

Hence a player who removes trained pilots from a group scheduled to return is not really doing anything gamey because they are not altering the game engine outcome.
