If you think education is expensive, consider the alternative.

For some reason (?) that reminded me of this quote by The Admiral!!!

Stupidity cannot be cured with money, or through education, or by legislation. Stupidity is not a sin, the victim can't help being stupid. But stupidity is the only universal capital crime; the sentence is death, there is no appeal, and execution is carried out automatically and without pity.

While visiting my in-laws a few years ago, we took our son to a nearby small Dinosaur exhibit. We purchased a T-shirt for him, replete with colorful dinos splashed on the front as well as a reference to the Dinosaur Musuem proudly emblazoned on the shirt itself.

Is the plural of dufus dufi or dufum?

I'm not sure who you refer to when you say "The Admiral" (and he was a graduate of the US Naval Academy), but isn't that quote from Robert Heinlein? I think it is said by Lazarus Long, maybe in "Time Enough For Love."

From memory.

Many book publishers have stopped checking grammar and usage. At least most authors have some skill in those areas. On the other hand, I get theses written in 'Business English' from time to time, and they make my head hurt! (Think Cantonese with an English vocabulary.)

Do they write this way because they're trying to leverage their synergies or because Business English is the new global network paradigm for communications standards?

Yep.. It's from The Notebooks of Lazarus Long in that book..
A lot of people refer to him as the Admiral because of his crusty outlook on things in his work...

Heh. I've been a fan since I was 8-YO. I once (early 80s) wrote him a letter and got a nice, long hand-written reply from Ginny H.

I've never heard of him referred to as The Admiral. I think, given his "love" of authority, that he wouldn't have liked it much. His heart would be with the deck apes.

Years ago there was a set of drawings for construction labeled 'Pubic Pool'. Lose any L and it's still bad.

Business English is a lingua franca in a lot of those countries, but it's not English as you and I know it. Every year, I get a few foreign students who don't speak standard English, but managed to pass the TOEFL based on their knowledge of Business English. Few of them pass the course.

However there is a difference between ignorance and stupidity. Stupidity is an inability to learn, ignorance is a failure to learn. Ignorance can be cured.

Years ago I saw a handmade sign for a "lawn more repair shop" in northeast Georgia.

Last summer, my daughter spotted a "Infants 1/2 off" sign in a store in Blairsville, GA.

While on the positive side - those that know how to manipulate English.

An ad in the local rag for a camping shop had a sale with the catch phrase: 'Now is the winter of our discount tents"

While a grocer had: 'New season's vegetable sale; for the risque: fresh french lettuce'
