Ah fun game going here...(last game got stalled when ye-olde uber-find maxed the tech I was crash researching, so I'm starting over...)

Set pirates and critters to max. Haven't heard much from critters, but sheesh... the pirates have been a right pain.

Well, to be fair, it wasn't so much the pirates as the lost colony. Which came complete, with lost ship. And what a wonderful lost ship too. A beaut of a cruiser for an empire with all of 7 colonies to its name, with a whopping (if memory serves) 240 firepower.

You'd think the colony might have warned me about the pirate ambush....

So in addition to adding 2.3 billion people to my own empire, I added an amazing, wonderful, I'd kill to get one this early, beaut of a warship to the pirate fleets.

Which promptly found my only port, and blew it up from outside the range of the port weapons (Go go Shaktur Firestorm!). I even threw all 3 of my military ships at it (funny, combined they had 50% more firepower, but they barely scratched the thing -- it's got some potent shields on it).

So it blew up my starting colony port. Twice.

...
...

I've since laid 2 space ports out at other colonies, and have one upgraded to a medium port (with some REAL torpedos that travel further than blasters, not just those fire-water Shaktur the auto-upgrade likes to default to).

Anyway, now that I have a 3 warship hulls laid out (not enough to deal with the dread pirate ship), the diplomats are advising that I go to war...

Funny how politics and reality never coincide. I have no navy, just 3 ships still under construction in the dry-docks, yet the advice is to pick naval fights.

Yup, advisors are great at concocting really poor advices... They make you build too much ships, tell you to break treaties with empires you are in good terms with, try to sabotage them too and also tell you to go to war when you don't have the means to do it... Go advisors, go.
