Guadalcanal Scen.

My Jap carriers are shot of ammo and planes. I order them to retire to Truk, set reaction to zero.

That turn the drove right up to the sight US carriers and committed hara-kiri.

How is that possible? I don't understand how a commander knowing he has few planes and little ammo would head towards the enemy when ordered to leave. Sorry "friction" doesn't make it for me here.

Check the aggression skill of the TF commander. Aggressive leader can disregard "do not react" orders.

One reason I really dislike using Halsey as CV TF commander during first half of war. 90 Aggression is not a good thing when you are underdog.

Halsey's Japanese counterpart was in command.

Or did any other SCTF get involved prior?  A number of people have used PT's to "spook" CATF's into a wrong direction withdrawal.  Most famous so far is what happened to Cuttlefish....

Thanks, one more factor I hadn't taken into account. I did have a VERY aggressive CDR, well, he went down with his ship, guess he got his just rewards.

Thanks for helping me understand this!

BSPEER,

Lots of nuances in the game that are hard to put your arms around the first few times you play. One is to never, never, never (did I mention NEVER) stand down a combat carrier unit until in port. Always assume a CV, surface, or sub battle could occur that turn. Set CV plane missions accordingly. Always have ample attack, search, and CAP aircraft in replensihment or repair port. Have surface combat ships patrolling and protecting the port if it can be raided while CV in port. As to torpedoing TF performance by selecting a suboptimal commander, that would be...unwise. If you set the TF reaction to 0 and set direct absolute, you can do no more than that from a ship perspective.

Trust me when I tell you the list of do's and don't-s is long, and I certainly dont have all of them in my pocket.
