I have enabled the theme, but no matter what i put in it, nothing show up in game. I don't understand what is wrong there (using correct paths or not). Is there anything else i need to do so it works?

Hey!
I AM NOT trying to insult you; Directory paths are the most difficult part of making it work. It took me a little while too. Double check it against their update guide. The directory structure of the mods are not the same as the base game.
See the customization guides...
And again, I am not trying to insult you.

Don't worry about me being insulted, i know i must have omitted something or messed something. I just want to know what i did wrong because i can't figure it out myself. I'm used to mod games and use mods created by other people, but this game i don't get how it's supposed to work. And i read the customization guide, but i guess i must have misread or failed to see something there.

If your still having problems, could you tell us exactly what you are trying to mod?  That would help   Not verything is moddable, and a simple spelling, or maybe even capital letter vs small letter might mess it up

I haven't modded anything myself yet, i just want to make the troop mod and the new weapon effects mod work. But i haven't managed to make them show up in game yet. To add insult to injury there, my game tend to run slow on my machine, but tried the game on a friend computer and it run very smoothly (my machine isn't that old).

Foraven, the weapon improvements mods don't go into the customization folder. These are image replacements so they need to go under the 'images/effects/weapons' directory. This means you should backup your originals and if you want to change back, restore the originals.

You don't have to overwrite them, I simply copy and paste the original beam effect inside the folder, that way if I ever want the original back it's right there in the main folder, it won't effect your game at all being in there.

Replacing Troops
...\Matrix Games\Distant Worlds\images\units\troops

Troops are named:

Troop_0
Troop_1
...
Troop_19

etc.

All you need to do is rename the Troop your replacing (We'll use 'Troop_0' as an example) to something like 'Troop_0_Original' then add the custom Troop image (Needs to be a .png) in the same folder and rename it to 'Troop_0' (Make sure to keep Capitals, don't add the ' marks)
Now in the game that Troop image will be replaced.  Since your replacing the main images it will keep that image no matter what theme you use, until you change it yourself.

Replacing the Weapons images
...\Matrix Games\Distant Worlds\images\effects\weapons

area_0, area_1, area_2
beam_0,beam_1, ... ,beam_4
hyperdeny_0
torpedo_0, ... ,torpedo_5
(The images 'torpedo_0' to 'torpedo_3' spin in the game when shot at the enemy.)

Exact same method as the Troop images, rename what you want to replace to save it.  Then add the new image in, and name it to what you replaced.
Example 'beam_0_original' Now add new image and rename it 'beam_0'
The weapons don't have caps originally so keep them all lowercase.

Even if you know this already perhaps you missed a step or I explained something new, if you have anymore questions the community here is friendly so go ahead and ask freely :3

I think you are supposed to be able to use Troop Images in the Customization folder though, at least according to the customization guide anyway.

have you tried it like the guide says ??

in the Customization folder

\DistantWorlds\Customization\Name Of Theme

this should hold all folders you are trying to change as well as System.txt (System Names) and Races.txt (Race Attributes)

Troop changes should apear under the troopImages (i think its case sensitive)

i.e \DistantWorlds\Customization\Name Of Theme\troopImages

should hold Troop_0.png, Troop_1.png, Troop_2.png ...

Ship Changes should go into shipImages

\DistantWorlds\Customization\Name Of Theme\shipImages

under it should be a folder replacing the family of ships (for instance Family1)

\DistantWorlds\Customization\Name Of Theme\shipImages\Family1

the names of the ships should be identical to the original ones so frigate.png should still be frigate.png in your new folder

hope i helped this works for me

p.s DONT FORGET TO LOAD THE THEME IN THE GAME'S MAIN MENU
