Viet Cong Regiment sized force overruns Song Be

After two months of peace and quiet the Viet Cong have launched a regimental sized attack on Song Be (Phouc Binh) which is north of Saigon overrunning the city and causing massive casualties on the ARVN forces based in and around the city. The ARVN's 35th Ranger Battalion, 36th Ranger Battalion, 2/9th infantry Battalion, 411th Regional force company, and the 412th Regional force company have all been routed in the attack. The 411th Regional force company was completely destroyed in the attack. Song Be is close to the Cambodian border and it is believed that the VC crossed the border undetected from their base areas in that country. Reinforcements and airstrikes will be needed to retake Song Be from the Viet Cong. Hopefully this isn't part of a bigger enemy offensive in South Vietnam this concludes turn 10.

The 34th and 37th ARVN Ranger Battalions are helilifted in to try and retake Song Be from the Viet Cong Regiment that overran the town last turn. Duc Co CIDG Camp overrun by NVA soldiers

The attack on Song Be was the beginning of what appears to be a part of a wider offensive being conducted by the NVA and VC as another attack is conducted by North Vietnamese Army troops on the CIDG Camp at Duc Co southwest of Pleiku near the Ia Drang Valley. The Camp is quickly overrun by an attacking NVA Regiment that appears to have crossed into South Vietnam from a hidden base area in Cambodia. The CIDG detachment A-253 is broken up and on the run from the camp. Reinforcements from the Pleiku area will have to be helilifted into the area immediately to stop the NVA troops and retake Duc Co.

Bad luck for Duc Co, most of the times Elmer does not attack the camp, just lay siege to it.

I think retaking Duc Co is gonna be bloody there isn't much in the area that can come save it. The ARVN rangers from Pleiku will have to be sent in and maybe the ARVN Airborne unit there hopefully they can at least stop the NVA from going any further.

Turn 12 - 24 May 1965 to 30 may 1965

Turn 12 has opened with Doc Co CIDG camp overrun by NVA troops as well as the reocupation of Song Be by the shattered ARVN troops that fought off the VC attack in the previous turn. I expect more attacks by the enemy this turn as their monsoon season offensive continues. Free world forces in South Vietnam are expanding as the first Australian troops arrive. There are several missions this turn the first one is a road clearing search and destroy operation in the Pleiku area, the second one is the opening and securing of a new CIDG camp at Dak Sut by detachment A-218 and the final mission is a search and destroy operation by the other battalion in the 173rd Airborne Brigade north of Vung Tau. Here's the news summary for the turn.

Song Be retaken for now

Song Be is retaken but at heavy cost in ARVN soldiers and to the town itself which lies in ruins. The Viet Cong forces that took the town suffered heavy losses but have withdrawn without a trace. The shattered ARVN units will have to rebuild before they can search the local area for any sign of the VC.

On the 24th of May 1965 ARVN troops in the Pleiku and Kontum area have received instructions to reopen the road between these two towns in a limited search and destroy mission. The 2nd Battalion of the 42nd ARVN Infantry and the ARVN 3rd Armored Cavalry squadron are to take part in the operation. The roads are reopened between the towns with negative enemy contact. There is a damaged bridge on the roadway that will need repairs. The town of Plei Xe is also visited by government troops in the operation.

Battle for Duc Co

To try and retake the Duc Co CIDG camp and stop an NVA Regiment from proceeding any further into South Vietnam several ARVN units are rushed to the area of the fallen camp that fell last turn. The 20th ARVN Ranger Battalion, 7th ARVN Airborne Battalion, 91st ARVN Airborne Battalion and the A-503 MIKE Detachment combat assault the NVA positions. Also Jets from WESTPAC/Dixie station carriers conduct air strikes on the NVA positions causing devastating casualties on the NVA Regiment. The NVA troops hold for now but at heavy cost.

Viet Cong Regiment sized force overruns Ba Gia

Ba Gia west of Quang Ngai City has been attacked by a Viet Cong Regiment which managed to overrun the town and nearly destroy the ARVN 3rd Battalion 4th Infantry that was guarding the place. The ARVN command has started an operation called TU LUC 150 which will hopefully retake Ba Gia and stop the 1st Viet Cong Regiment in its tracks before it pushes any further towards Quang Ngai city. Massive airstrikes will be needed to dislodge this large VC force as well. This concludes Turn 12.

Turn 13 - May 31st 1965 to June 6th 1965

Turn 13 opens with Ba Gia under attack, Duc Co still in enemy hands and Phu Loc under attack. The NVA and VC are stepping up their attacks all over the country. There are no missions this turn but the ARVN are continuing an operation to relieve Ba Gia Operation Tu Loc 150. On June 1st of this turn 2 Marine A-1 Skyhawk squadrons land at Chu Lai Airfield north of Ba Gia. The Chu Lai airfield is a short airfield for tactical support (SATS) which is in effect an "aircraft carrier" on land, complete with catapult (from 1967 on) and arresting wires. Built by laying some 4000 feet of aluminum matting runways on highly unstable, sandy soil, Chu Lai was built in 24 days. Also on June 5th officials in Saigon have reported that after a two month lull, main force Viet Cong units have returned to the battlefield in increasing numbers since early May. Here's the news summary for turn 13.

Battle of Phu Loc Results

The Battle of Phu Loc is almost an even match despite the overwhelming firepower at the disposal of the ARVN Rangers they cause more casualties on the VC but the VC remain on the outskirts of the town of Phu Loc and will probably escape to fight another day before more ARVN reinforcements arrive.

Airstrikes around Duc Co

More Airstrikes have been called for from WESTPAC/Dixie Station carriers on NVA positions east of the overrun Duc Co CIDG Camp near the Cambodian border. The ARVN and NVA forces are in the same positions as last turn. The ARVN troops are maintaining defensive positions but do not attack the NVA troops this turn. The Airstrikes manage to cause 7% casualties on the entrenched NVA position.

Turn 14 - June 6th to June 13th 1965

Turn 14 opens with Ba Gia back in ARVN hands for now. There is one mission this turn to build and secure a new CIDG camp at Hai Yen in the delta for detachment A-411. On June 7th General Westmoreland reports that North Vietnamese troops are infiltrating South Vietnam and ARVN troops are reluctant to assume the offensive and in some cases their steadfastness under fire is coming into doubt. He asks for another 41,000 US combat troops now and another 52,000 later. Here's the news summary for turn 14.

Operation Tu Luc 150 aftermath

With Operation Tu Luc 150 counted as a success and Ba Gia retaken the ARVN 39th Ranger Bn will now garrison Ba Gia. The ARVN 3rd battalion 4th Infantry that previously occupied the site will be moved closer to Quang Ngai City to rebuild after its collapse at Ba Gia. The Viet Cong regiment that attacked Ba Gia has vanished for now but will surely return.

New CIDG Camp built at Hai Yen

The only mission of this turn is the building and securing of a CIDG camp for detachment A-411 at Hai Yen which is next to another camp at Binh Hung in the southern delta which is also occupied by elements of detachment A-411.
