Hi,

I need advise and recommendations on finding a WWII themed game. I have played and enjoyed Commander Europe At War and Hearts Of Iron 3. Am looking for something in between these games, as I love the fun of CEAW but am bogged down by the micro management of HOI3 (though I love some of the details).

Looking at finding a game having these things.

1. Hex Based
2. Turn Based
3. Able to assign historical generals and commanders with different stats and abilities that can influence the unit's abilities. Something like CEAW but with more generals like HOI3.
4. Strategic to Operational level.
5. Flexibility in options, meaning can play as historical simulation or what-ifs.
6. Can create hierarchy as in army groups, armies, corps, divisions.

Hope you all can help me. Thanks so much.

You came to the right place. I'll let other people give you recommendations but there should be many.

Well then you've come to the right place. There are a few games that meet your requirements, from the top of my mind;

Vic's latest release, decisive battles, personally I love that game.
Wastelands games, Time of Wrath and Storm over the Pacific.
TOAWIII, awesome game, *if* you can handle the gameUI, a million scenarios.
WiTP; a monstergame. Too big for me, I never bought it, afraid I might drown in it and never resurface.

Hm, that's probably enough for the next decade of wargaming.

Have you tried the Grand Stragegy expansion for CEAW. Adds a lot of detail and best of all it is free :)

I have played WW2 Time of Wrath and can say that it does ww2 grand strategy at a nice, moderate, complexity. It's a jump up from CEAW but not overwhelming. It was refreshing having something right in the middle as there doesn't seem to be many at that level.

They also have their new pacific theater one out now, too.

Thanks Josh for your recommendations. Could you help me a little more?

Just wondering among these games that you have recommended, which one places a high emphasis on assigning commanders? As in which of these games have the most comprehensive list of historical commanders, or realistic stats and benefits they bring to their respective units?

I must admit that i am a sucker when it comes to things like that. Thanks a million.

Sounds Great! I really have not heard of it and i really should, because CEAW is really a great game. Thanks so much for that, Iain. Will there be a Pacific War version coming up? Or a world domination one using the same game engine?

Thanks Nefarious, i am highly interested in this game too. Among the top of my list, though i still cant decide which one. Have reservations as i heard not so nice thing about the naval side of combat.

Also, can we create army hierarchy with this game?

WITP!

Hex Based = YES
Turn Based = YES (WEGO)
Able to assign historical generals = YES (not only general but fleet commanders and air squadron commanders as well)
Strategic to Operational level = YES
Flexibility of options = YES (just don't play PBEM against grognards as they insist on house rules that limit you to only historical options)
Create hierarchy = NO (it's all historical but you can re-assign then to different HQ's)

No, WW2 Time of Wrath has no hierarchy. Each unit is an Army, itself, as it's definitely a grand scale game.

You can assign generals to units and they have names which is about all the history background you'll get for them. They give bonuses to their unit, and nearby units, depending on their rating. A cool thing about WW2ToW is that it has lots of historical and hypothetical events that fire off and you get to make a choice on many. For instance.. I recall one that let me, as the Russian supreme leader, decide whether to add an extra defense line after the 'annexing' of it's share of Poland at various costs.

The naval part was very abstracted and a bit crazy. Since it was the European Theater, I didn't worry about it too much as the Germans get murderized on the sea and their production income is much better spent on land and air forces along with research. Their new Pacific one has totally redone the naval setup and has a lot more polish on it from the look of things though I've not played it yet.

Probably Decisive Battles and WitP:AE. Hm, not quite sure if that is what you mean though. They have leaders and generals, Decisive Battles gives you a curriculum vitae about the leader/general, and they can get exp. Haven't played the game long enough to tell if they really get "close" to you, that only comes after a long campaign.
WitP has some outstanding AAR's though, really worth checking out to give you an idea. TOAW III too, that one has a ... long awaited patch about to come out (3.4), and has also some very immersive AAR's.
Just to give you an idea to what TOAW is capable of, here's the German AAR "Im Osten brennts" http://www.si-games.com/forums/showthread.php?t=17984&page=111 (it's just f&#@king awesome, and pardon my french here).
But as I said, too big for my brain, I'd fall unconscious after having moved a quarter of the counters... LOL

Monster scenarios like these are the ones that killed TOAW enjoyment in my case.
A turn takes a long time to finish and setting the stances for the units turns into clickfests.

Thats why I'd strongly recommend CEAW with the Grand Strategy mod. Its a revelation to me just what a wonderful WW2 game this has become through this free expansion and its ideal for pbem play.

You should look at Advanced Tactics WWII, sounds exactly like what you're looking for.

I have to say, this post still has me thinking organic spambot, sorry if that offends.

I just bought Time Of Wrath and Decisive Battles.

I love the interface of Decisive Battles and also those short paragraphs of description on the generals and units. I have not fully tried out the game yet though it looks really well made. But the thing is still it's more operational than strategic. And also there is still some inflexibility, limiting everything to just those generals involved in the respective campaigns.

I am hoping to find something with the fun of CEAW but with all the generals in Hearts Of Iron 3, the customization of units of HOI3, the research tree of HOI3. And also strategic flexibility of what if scenarios within the WW2 frame.

Sigh, I wonder whether what I am looking for is weird or not.

No problem, no offense at all.

I took a look at the features of Advanced tactics and liked the idea. Just wondering does it contain the component of historical commanders?

Not at all.

AT is an easy accessible and unique game, but it's scale and level of abstraction makes it not really feasible to recreate historical battles. At least not in the way one can do with TOAW or the Panther games (CotA, BftB, etc.).

By emphasizing on historical commanders you might consider civil war games like WbtS, but from my knowledge there are no titles which meet all your asked demands.

AT-WWII will not allow for historical commander type interaction but the follow on to AT-WWII that just became avialable from Matrix will do that. The follow on is Decisive Campaigns - Warsaw to Paris. I haven't bought or played it but there is a forum for it.
