You don't think this might not antagonise your opponent and spur him to exact even more retribution on the newly launched CV

You good as long as it describes what it does instead of what happens to it.

I read in one of the AAR's where a player would name his carriers for the Japanese carriers he had sunk in the game. Now that is antagonism!

If I found that thing it would quickly become known as USS Artificial Coral Reef...

And don't think you are safe...I-10 managed to sink the Enterprise for me in my AI game, by attacking it 3 times in 2 days without taking a single depth charge attack in return...the DD screen was completely inept. 4 Type 95s did the job oh so nicely.

How about USS Reluctant in honor of the Merchant Marine vessel crewed by a moribund bunch of sad sacks in the movie Mr. Roberts?

or

USS Nuts

I think I said this at an earlier time, but I have renamed one of mine USS Ranger. The real one will never make it to the PTO, and I think that name is just about the best warship name the USN ever adopted from the Revolutionary War. JPJ's letter requesting "a fast ship" still, after all these decades, gives me chills.

and for the sick and twisted category, how about:

USS Tokyo Rose

one of the sound bites in the game would be "this is Tokyo Rose reporting the sinking of Toyko Rose today near Okinawa"

What, no USS Minderbinder?

"This time Milo had gone too far. Bombing his own men and planes was more than even the most phlegmatic observer could stomach, and it looked like the end for him. … Milo was all washed up until he opened his books to the public and disclosed the tremendous profit he had made."

And, of course:

"There was only one catch and that was Catch-22, which specified that a concern for one's own safety in the face of dangers that were real and immediate was the process of a rational mind. Orr was crazy and could be grounded. All he had to do was ask; and as soon as he did, he would no longer be crazy and would have to fly more missions. Orr would be crazy to fly more missions and sane if he didn't, but if he was sane, he had to fly them. If he flew them, he was crazy and didn't have to; but if he didn't want to, he was sane and had to. Yossarian was moved very deeply by the absolute simplicity of this clause of Catch-22 and let out a respectful whistle.

"That's some catch, that Catch-22," he observed.

"It's the best there is," Doc Daneeka agreed."

I'm old school. I named them for old ships of the USN that had been cancelled or renamed. I particularly like USS Reprisal. I named another USS Retailiation. They are going to sail with Enterprise2. And I just might name another for a famous British ship. USS Revenge. Not that I'm annoyed with Chickenboy or anything!

USS Blue
USS Humpback
USS Killer

and of course

USS <self censored>...use your imaginations, folks...

Well, you may want to make sure that you paint the right word on the bow. I'd run that 'Retailiation" through a spellcheck before you waste a good bottle of champagne on it.

"Retailiation"-isn't that basically a pricing war between two retailers? You know, like when Walgreens cuts their prices and CVS "retailiates"?

One could go the George Foreman route and name them all "George" It would certainly make intelligence difficult when one is attacked by 300 aircraft from the seemingly same carrier.

Well, there was a USS Whale.

I still think USS Sand Lance is the best sub name ever.

Or you could get an Abbot and Costello routine going by naming one US Submarine.

Japanese intel analyst: "Sir! US Submarine sighted!"

Officer: "Good work! Which submarine?"

Analyst: "US Submarine"

Officer: "I heard you the first time. Whcih submarine?"

Analyst: "US Submarine"

Officer, drawing sword . . .
