Subscribed!  Thanks for doing this AAR - I made it a few weeks into the Dec8th scenario, but I'm starting over after applying the latest patch.  This is what I need to help tackle everything to manage in this game

Poor fella... at least your withdrawal is temporary! Nice AAR! One of the few that give some insight into AI. Keep it rolling!

A tutorial for WitP:AE, at last!

Thank you very much, Sardaukar!! Great initiative, great work!

Stay tuned...

Thank you for your kind words!

Maybe "tutorial" is not exactly right description, since I won't concentrate to game interface that much (apart to where I deem it necessary). Maybe "Introduction to Grand Campaign" might have been better description.

I know how intimidating the first GC scenario can be and I try to make it bit more "digestible". I know that everyone eventually wants to get into GC, so hopefully this AAR will be helpful.

Ok, I see...

Anyway, thank you very much for your great work!
(I´m converting it to a PDF file to read it in anytime and anywhere! ).

AAR is still temporarily on hold until tomorrow, too many real-life commitments right now.

As a WITP virgin, this thread is of immense value. I plan to cut my teeth on the less involved WPO to understand many of the simpler game mechanics, but can't wait to lead the RN Eastern Fleet to... the bottom of the Indian Ocean!

Now appoint you my second favourite Finn after Aki Riihilahti

That was exactly my approach. WPO was a great way for me to get used to the geography in the pacific war. Growing up on UV, it took me quite a while to get used to the Philippine/DEI part of the map. There are also lots of turns where little combat is happening, so it's a lot more forgiving, and if you're a few days late doing something, odds are you won't suffer (much) for it. Oh, and I have a deep love of pre-WWI battleships. USS Monadnock is my spiritual flagship.

I was a month into AE, until I accidentally saved my playing of the Guadalcanal scenario over it. It took forever to assemble the jigsaw puzzle that the OZ divisions start as. Kudos to Sardaukar for this AAR for helping me take a fresh look at a restart.

Just curious about Rabaul: I have the same situation in my game, where Maizuru SNLF was not able to took the base due to my interdiction of the landing forces. In my game, however, the Japanese has been able to reinforce this small detachment and now the two opposing forces are basically the same, troop and AV-wise.

I was preparing to send a small Batallion from PM to Rabaul, but I would like to know first your opinion : is Rabaul a lost game whatever I do (I know, do not ask how , that the Japanese has a couple of little transports headed for this base)? Or is it possible to hold it against the AI?

Bear in mind that a lot of the strategies and tactics that work vs the AI will noy be generally as effective against a human PBEM opponent

The AI wastes no time speeding to Rabaul.  My rescue convoys always tend to show up on the same day as the invaders.

Usually Rabaul is pretty much gone unless you can reinforce with division or so. And getting division there is all but impossible, since AI tends to be quite quick bringing in reinforcements. I am evacuating troops from Rabaul to prop my defenses in PM. Every engineer and aviation support counts.

Great Idea Sardauker, I didn't read the whole thread so I may have missed it but it's a good idea on the first turn for the allied player to start building ports on all off map bases, once they are built to max switch to airfields.

Yes, that's what  am doing. Also good to build up ports first in those bases you plan to use for major supply unloading. Karachi and Bombay are those for me in India, for example. Really saves time in unloading.

Does AI bring "as many reinforcements as needed", or does it only follow a predetermined script? I.e., once you hold against the initial onslaught, can you get AI to bleed itself to death piecemeal, or will it finally assemble a big hammer in a coordinated effort?

AndyMac usually has nasty reinforcement scripts for all major objects of Japanese. There are lots of smaller scripts inside major ones, that will trigger if for example Rabaul is not captured and some other troop have reached their objectives. Then AI will reinforce the Rabaul attempt with those troops. I did successful "Fortress Java" defense in one game, but for example, IJA/IJN invaded Java with equivalent of 10 full divisions. I had 6 reinforcement divisions there plus Dutch and finally managed to crush the attack. But you can see, that scrips are quite well made by AndyMac so that if Japan needs a place, AI will really try to get it.

Orders for Dec 21-22:

Central Pacific, North Pacific & USA:

- CVs are back in port, their air units set to 100% training, USC fighter unit unloaded to PH. CVs are going to stay in port for a while, training and upgrading planes if possible.

- ship repairs in PH adjusted. When major ships have done all readiness/pierside repairs, they will be set to WC for shipyard repairs. This can take up to 2 months, depending on amount os sys/minor flt dmg.

India:

- 23rd Indian Brigade sent to Calcutta from Hyderabad

Burma:

- units modes adjusted to either combat or rest for units arrived to destinations.

Malaya:

- one small recon air unit moved to Palembang to ease Singapore base group administration penalties. Generally, when Singapore air units will start to get low on planes, we will transfer them to Batavia & Soerabaja to help with defense of Java.

DEI:

- 5x TK tanker TF loading fuel and sent towards Perth

- air tranport of Pamekasan KNIL Rgt to Soerabaja continues, we have already 51 assault value transported.

Australia & SWPac &SoPac:

- slight glitch with shipping 5th AUS Div last turn...TF sailed without anything...I guess my orders were not specific enough... ust be those damn dockyard unions again! Stevedore Union on strike!

- soon we will have Cebu BF to reinforce PM. Cargo TF is unloading extra supplies there.

- AVD & AS from Philippines should arrive to Brisbane in few days. Then we'll have functioning sub base there for S-class boats.

- Cargo TF sent to Noumea with 20k+ supplies to allow rebuild of USAAF Base forces there and building of proper air & naval base.

- air evacuation of Rabaul to PM continues. All Rabaul BF that can be air transported already there. Both Catalina units set to pick up Lark Bn.

Note the bombardment spotters improving the accuracy. You can do that by setting ships floatplanes to Night Ops - Recon and giving them your bombardment target as target. Depending on settings, you have to check if your TF arrives to target during night or day, though.

Loss of Wake, Rabaul & Lae were quite inevitable. We'll continue to evacuate AUS units outside Rabaul via flying boats, that is one neat trick worth knowing.

Japanese have immediately based some air unots to Rabaul. This will complicate our reinforcement of PM a bit, but fortunately, Sallies are not that good on Naval Attack.

Orders for Dec 23-24:

CentPac & USA etc.:

- small Cargo TF sent from PH to Hilo, base low on supplies.

- 2 AKVs from Balmoa (Panama) sent to SF, escorted by DD.

- AK from same place sent to PH, escorted by DD, this ship is very useful supplying 1 size ports because of it's intrinsic amphibious unloading capability.

- one ART FA Rgt sent to Seattle in strat mode, Seattle is our NoPac supply hub.

- 2 Inf Rgts for 24th and 25th Divs are just outside PH, will arrive in day or so.

India:

- first Hurricane unit arrives in Cape Town. I am taking a risk sending unescorted TF to carry it to Colombo. One IJN sub is all it takes...

Burma:

- not much, units checked, modes adjusted.

Malaya:

- same as above, this is routine, since air attacks reset Move to Combat.

- Singapore civilian shipping sent to Tjilitjap, only few light combat ships remain here, to be used against IJN surprise landing, for example Mersing, that I won't defend on ground.

- Singapore is now lvl 3 fort and continues to build. I usually stop forts for that, but in Singapore we still have good supply level.

DEI:

- not much, ship repair adjusted in Soerabaja

Philippines:

- several subs damaged last turn set to Soerabaja for repairs. Manila is way too dangerous now. Get into habit of checking your subs for damage regularly. Easiest way is to use hotkey S and sort ships by type and damage type. I usually sort them by Flt dmg and send home those with high dmg lvl.

- first air unit disbanded, pilots to pool. This will be more common after units run out of planes.

China:

- not much, we'll try small deliberate attack in Central China against weak enemy units.

Australia, SWPac & SoPac:

- 5 AUS embarking TF again in Brisbane, to be transported to PM.

- Cebu BF unloading in PM.

- Squadron of transport planes send from Brisbane to Charters Towers.

- reminder of Lark Bn is being evacuated outside Rabaul by Catalinas.

BC Repulse ate 2 torpedoes and is in Soerabaja with 37 flt dmg, and 20-30 other damage. I'll be evacuated to Perth when CV menace passes (it there will be any ships afloat then, of course!)

Orders for Dec 29-30:

Centpac & USA:

- 24th and 25th Inf Divs recombined in PH, 25th set unrestricted with paying PPs.

- minor adjustments on air training

- B-17s in Palmyra continue now to Suva

- Cargo TF dispatched to Palmyra, base out of supplies because of B-17 shuttle.

India:

- no changes

Burma:

- changed some unit modes to appropriate.

Malaya:

- set units in Temuloeh to march south, since they are getting outflanked from west.

DEI:

- recombined one BF in Palembag to bigger one.

- I am going to keep PoW TF and Cruiser TF undocked out in Soerabaja and hope they will be able to last the attacks of IJN CV air. If not...

- air transport of Denpassar BF tp Soerabaja started.

Philippines:

- no orders, just cheking units. Main combat will soon commence when IJA enters Clark Field.

Australia, SWPac & SoPac:

- 22nd & 27th AUS brigades unloaded in Perth, set to rail to Sydney, 18th UK Div expected to start unloading in next turn

- 5th AUS Div on it's way to PM, hopefully IJN CVs do not turn NW and catch that TF!

- Cargo TF they sunk last turn managed to unload whopping 2k of supplies to Noumea...have to figure but how to get supplies there.

- cannot contest IJN CVs here, because not having anything to contest with. Low exp Hudsons and A-29 Banshees are only land-based bomber units. Not having single fighter unit there yet.
