I figured as much. Some day they should invent a floatplane that can take off from battleships and cruisers so you can see over the horizon. Or even a ship who's only job is to carry aeroplanes. Ah, who am I kidding, it'll never happen!

Halfway across the world, as part of the Greco-Turkish War, Turk forces captured Smyrna on September 9, a day after Greek forces evacuated. Today, the world is horrified as a Great Fire begins in the city.

Meanwhile, victorious Turkish forces continue their reconquest of Asia Minor. Their next target is Chanak, a town located at the narrowest spot of the Dardanelles, where British and French troops are entrenched to protect the Dardanelles Neutral Zone. The Turks threaten to attack Allied troops unless they withdraw from the area immediately.

Halfway across the world, the city of Smyrna continues to burn. Rumors blaming the Turks for the fire, and Turkish genocide against Greeks and Armenians in the city, are beginning to appear in Western newspapers. Royal Navy and Greek ships are assisting with evacuations from the area, and more Royal Navy ships are ordered into the area.

In Chanak, the pro-Turk French government has ordered its forces to begin withdrawing beyond the Merc River, which is on the European side of the Dardanelles. Greek forces are already heading that way. British troops are ordered to hold Chanak, and dig in.

Meanwhile, in Shanghai, China, five Japanese Buddhist monks, members of an ultra-nationalist sect, are beaten near a factory just outside the Japanese concession by agitated Chinese civilians. This is one of many incidents between Chinese and Japanese civilians in Shanghai, as tensions have run high since the war began. What makes this incident notable, however, is Japanese soldiers come to the aid of the monks, shooting a number of Chinese citizens on Chinese soil, and capturing others and dragging them back to the Japanese concession for interrogation.

World events continue to dominate the center stage.

In Smyrna, the last fires are finally quelled. Much of the city is completely destroyed. No one can even estimate the number of deaths. It is the most violent public event in world history since the end of the Great War almost 4 years ago.

The British cabinet meets, and decides that British forces will maintain its positions in Chanak. Royal Navy units are arriving in the area, with more coming. The mood in England is extremely tense.

In Shanghai, the factory near where the Buddhist monks were beaten burns to the ground in the early morning hours. As dawn breaks, the Japanese announce that half of the Chinese citizens they captured are from the American concession, and produces a written confession from at least two of them stating they are working under the orders of the Republic of China and the American concession in Shanghai. Chinese and American officials categorically deny this, and state the confessions were probably made under torture. The Japanese also ominously note that some of their other Chinese prisoners are from the British and French concessions, and while not directly blaming those governments, suggests that American and Republic of China agents, taking advantage of the lack of security in those quarters, have created a conspiracy which is destablizing the entire city. Chinese protests in the morning give way to scattered rioting by late afternoon. The worst rioting is in and around the Japanese concession, and gunfire can be occasionally heard coming from that area.

Thank you for your kind words.

The AAR is posted 2-3 turns behind the 3-day turn that is actually being played, which allows for some interpretation when the posts are made. Since there's a bit of a lull in combat right now, plus the fact Rysyonok and I were both busy at different times this weekend, I had a little more time to get imaginative. So far, the Greco-Turkish War and Chanak Incident are following history's course, though time will show there are reasons why they are being included in the AAR. The Shanghai events are more imaginary, though I borrowed some elements from the Shanghai Incident of 1932.

With foreign secretary Lord Curzon out of London, various cabinet ministers issue a communiqu� threatening Turkey with a declaration of war from Great Britain and her Dominions, on the grounds that Turkey is violating the Treaty of Sevres. Emergency cabinet meetings are held in capitals throughout the British Empire.

In Shanghai, anti-Japanese rioting continues for a second day. Buildings are torched in the Japanese concession, and there are many reported incidents of Japanese troops shooting, bayoneting, and beating rioters in and around the Japanese concession. Reports of violence spreading to the unofficial Japanese settlement in the Hongkew section of Shanghai results in a small but heavily armed, detachment of Japanese troops moving there overnight to secure the neighborhood.

In a move that shakes Prime Minister Lloyd George�s government to its core, the Dominions of Canada, South Africa, and Australia announce that they will not commit troops to a war against the Turks. New Zealand states it will agree to send some troops, in return for an increased Royal Navy presence against possible Japanese aggression. British citizens also seem very hesitant to enter another war, with a widely-circulated letter appearing in a Conservative newspaper from a writer called �A Colonial� stating ��we cannot alone act as policeman of the world. The financial and social position of this country makes it impossible�. It is widely rumored that �Colonial� is leading Conservative politician Andrew Bonar Law.

Further inflamed by the stationing of Japanese troops in Hongkew, the rioting in Shanghai continues to get uglier by the hour. At midday, a fire is observed growing in Hongkew. Japanese troops rushing to Hongkew�s aid across Chinese soil are attacked by Chinese nationals, police officers, and soldiers. The Japanese battle, block by block, into Hongkew. By the time they reach the stricken neighborhood, several square blocks are on fire, killing several dozen Japanese civilians. Shanghai descends into complete pandemonium. In the chaos that follows, Japanese troops pursue rioters into the British and French concessions, resulting in some brief though violent battles with the rioters.

Except for cases of self-defense, the other foreign troops in Shanghai are ordered to withhold firing on Chinese rioters, for different reasons � the Americans due to their tenuous position in the Far East, the British due to the unsettled international situation they now find themselves in, and the French concession has somehow managed to avoid the worst violence. It is observed that Japanese troops take special precautions not to harm foreigners, even Americans, while battling the Chinese in foreign concessions.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 09/18/22

British foreign secretary Lord Curzon leaves London for Paris in an attempt to smooth the strained relationship with England and France. Facing an unpopular potential war, estranged from her allies, and unsupported by her Dominion partners, Great Britain has not been this diplomatically isolated since before the 20th century.

In Shanghai, American marines are roused from their barracks at 3:30 AM, informed that some of their comrades are fighting the Japanese Army near a textile factory in the French concession. Intense gunfire can be heard from the area. A quick head count reveals all marines are accounted for. An hour later, a Swiss diplomat approaches the barracks and asks again - are all American marines accounted for? When he is told yes, he requests that officers accompany him to the French concession. Several Marine officers, with appropriate security, are sent there, where they encounter a scene of a very-recent battle. Bodies are still on the street, a small, nearby factory is ablaze, and articles of clothing are swirling in the breeze. As a French fire brigade tries to extinguish the flames, a French major standing next to a Japanese officer near a cluster of bodies motions for the Americans to approach. When they do so, the Americans are shocked to discover the corpses appear to be Chinese nationals wearing what appear to be imitations of American marine uniforms. Through an interpreter, the Japanese officer coolly asks the Americans if they have any idea who these people are. When he receives a negative response from the highest ranking American officer, the Japanese officer shrugs, and says he actually believes him. The Japanese officer then points to the clothing blowing around on the street. They are also imitations of American, British, French, and Japanese Army uniforms.

Dawn breaks to another day of widespread anti-Japanese rioting and forceful countermeasures by the Imperial Japanese Army spreading through most parts of Shanghai. At 9:00 AM, the Japanese warn the Shanghai Municipal Council that Chinese nationals, likely with assistance from the Republic of China and American agents, are masquerading as foreign soldiers in an attempt to create further chaos. The Japanese point out that, despite the fact that the US and Japan have been at war for 3� months, there have been no incidents of violence between American and Japanese troops in the Shanghai international concessions. But this discovery changes everything. Reminding the council that its citizens constitute the largest group of foreigners in Shanghai, the Japanese warn that if the Chinese, British, French, and even Americans, do not quickly take decisive action to restore order in the city, the Imperial Japanese Army will be forced to act to act unilaterally to safeguard its citizens� security. They also announce that their soldiers will begin patrolling the French concession. The French do not contest the move.

At 6:30 PM, a high-ranking Japanese civilian is severely wounded when a bomb is hurtled at his motorcade. An hour later, Japan announces that the situation in Shanghai has grown intolerable, and word spreads that an ultimatum will be issued at 12:01 AM, tomorrow morning�

At 12:55 AM, the Japanese issue an ultimatum to the Shanghai Municipal Council. The Council's offices were kept open in anticipation of it arriving. Copies are also received at the British, French, and Swiss embassies, as well as the League of Nations. The ultimatum reads, in part �

The Japanese empire can no longer tolerate acts of violence against Japanese citizens and property in Shanghai. Attacks are now being made on Japanese interests by hooligans wearing counterfeit British, French, and American military uniforms. Despite the lack of assistance from foreigners in restoring order, the Imperial Japanese Army has taken extraordinary measures not to harm foreigners, even those we are currently engaging in war, while protecting our citizens in the Shanghai international concessions. Regretfully, this latest development makes it impossible to continue this guarantee of protection.

Therefore, the Japanese nation will reluctantly bear the sole responsibility for maintaining order in Shanghai. To ensure successful peacekeeping operations, the following conditions must be met:
� All American, British, and French military units will leave Shanghai by September 25. Any soldiers wearing British, French, or American uniforms will be considered hostile imposters and fired upon.
� Likewise, because troops belonging to the Republic of China have engaged Japanese forces in the past week, all ROC armed forces are also ordered to leave Shanghai. Any unit in Shanghai may be considered hostile and fired upon after September 25. Interference from the Republic of China in Japanese peacekeeping operations will have the most severe ramifications. The peaceful Chinese citizens of Shanghai have nothing to fear from Japan or her armed forces.
� The Shanghai Municipal Police Force will disband until after the State of Emergency is lifted. Imperial Japanese Army units will be stationed at every police station, and will assume the duties of the Police Force.
� Most competent Shanghai Municipal Government officials will be allowed to retain their positions. Some Department Heads will be replaced by Japanese substitutes during the State of Emergency.
� Foreign citizens of any nation may remain in Shanghai, if they wish. The Imperial Japanese Army will continue to do its utmost to ensure their security, though that may prove impossible in the upcoming struggle it will be waging against lawlessness. Any foreign citizen who engages in acts detrimental to the Japanese nation, its citizens, or its armed forces during the State of Emergency will face harsh military justice.
� Safe passage of any foreign resident who wishes to leave Shanghai will be guaranteed until September 25. Reasonable attempts will be made to give safe passage to any lawful foreign resident wishing to leave after peacekeeping operations start on September 25.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 09/20/22

British Foreign Secretary Lord Curzon arrives in Paris for meetings with French Prime Minister Raymond Poincar�. The meetings do not go well at all. Poincar� states that his withdawl of French troops from Chanak will not be be cancelled or delayed, leaving the British Army to face the advancing Turkish army on its own. With no support for war from the British public or ithe Dominions, Lord Curzon has no choice but to agree to negotiate an armistice with the Turks.

Regarding Shanghai, Poincar� states that he has received guarantees that French citizens will be protected by the Japanese Army. Since it is the Japanese who are being attacked by Chinese hooligans, and the Japanese Army is willing to shed its blood to restore order, why should French soldiers be asked to fight and die? French units are already preparing to depart for Indo-China, and he has heard that the Americans are as well. The British are free to conduct their own foreign policy, of course, but the French have already made their decision and will stick with it.

The tumultious meetings continue into the late evening. When they conclude, a visibly agiatated Lord Curzon returning to his motorcade is overheard by French newspaper reporters describing Poincar� as �a horrid little man�. Newspaper extras promoting the talks as a French diplomatic triumph and slaming Lord Curzon for his remark are on Paris streetcorners within hours. Anglo-French relations are at their lowest point in almost 20 years.

In Shanghai, another day of rioting ensues. The French and Americans announce they will meet the Japanese withdrawl deadline. Most American citizens are preparing to depart as well. The Republic of China rejects the Japanese ultimatim, and states it will send additional troops into Shanghai to restore order. The Japanese reply is a deafening silence.

Moving on to Geneva to meet with Japanese officials at the League of Nations, Lord Curzon proposes a joint peacekeeping operation between Japanese and British troops in Shanghai. The offer is politely but firmly rejected � there would be too high a risk of Japanese troops mistaking British troops as disguised hooligans. Japan will assume sole responsibility for pacifying Shanghai, and British forces must get out of the way.

British troops in Shanghai are given orders to begin withdrawing from Shanghai. Many unit commanders out outraged by the orders, as the United Kingdom has the largest contingent of ground forces in the city, and effectively controls the Shanghai Municipal Council.

With tensions in Turkey seemingly resolved, albeit not to the British government�s satisfaction, Prime Minister Lloyd George announces that while some of the additional Royal Navy units in the Eastern Mediterranean will remain, a number of others will traverse the Suez Canal to Colombo to safeguard British interests in the Far East.

Sigh. My instincts told me he was going to hit Midway next. Minefields around Midway - no hits. Subs around Midway, not a single contact before the battle. DDs used as cannon fodder to drain the BB's ammo - that worked, he killed all 13 of them. Two full squadrons of BB's nearby - only one engages, and lets them get away after lobbing a few shells at them. I guess the other squadron didn't get the memo to engage the enemy when they are in the same hex you are in. When this battle started, I figured 1-2 of my dreadnoughts were going to the bottom, but I also figured I'd bring at least 1-2 of his dreadnoughts down, too. In the end, he got away with murder. At least now I know exactly where all of his heavies are, and where they are probably going.

USS R-6 (SS-83) sank off Japan today from ASW damage two days earlier. Commissioned in 1919 had a most unusual career:
- Only 7 months after commissioning, in December 1919, she was caught in a gale in New London harbor, Connecticut. She broke free of the AS Camden, and was swept onto a large rock at the entrance to the harbor. It took some time to get her off the rock.
- On September 27, 1921, one of her torpedo tubes malfunctioned and she sank off San Pedro, CA. She was refloated by R-10 and MSW Cardinal on October 13, and put back into commission (see the picture below).
- On October 7, 1922, only 5 days shy of being raised from her first sinking, she sank off Japan while on a war patrol. Navy men already considered her a jinxed ship, and confusing signals received at Pearl Harbor led to some speculation that her torpedo tube failing to close again contributed to her demise.

The US Navy continues to pour its frustration over the Midway battle on Kwajalein. The new SS No. 40 was unlucky enough to be caught in the bombardment, and sank at her moorings after a 12" shell from one of the pre-dreadnoughts scored a direct hit.

"The so-called Armistice of Mudanya was signed yesterday, between our country, our "allies" France and Italy, and the Turks. Once again we have been humiliated. We are evacuating the Dardeneles, and Turkish sovereignty over Istanbul has been recognized. Our defeated Greek allies are pulling out of Thrace, reestablishing the Turks as a European power. This comes on the heels of our humiliating withdrawl from Shanghai after another former ally threatened not to distinguish between our troops and lawless rioters. Relations with France are low, Italy is on the verge of a civil war, Greece is defeated, Japan is issuing us ultimatims, and the USA is angry with us for not supporting them in their Pacific War. Even our relations with our Dominions are strained. Our Prime Minister continues to say he will not tolerate any more retreats, then ends up doing just that. Now we hear Singapore is to be reinforced. Will that be the next place we evacuate? For the sake of our suffering country, something must change soon".

Things have been quiet at Shanghai for over a week. Nevertheless, things remain very tense, as US submarines continue to report, and in some cases torpedo, Japanese transports off the Chinese coast.
