In all the hullabaloo yesterday, I forgot to mention that I've now (finally) gotten around to joining a gym. The future Mrs. Boring Q. McDull made the mistake of telling me that the gym she goes to isn't overrun by steroid monkeys, so off I went.

It's been many years since I've done any sort of training, so I'm going to be in a Yamato-sized world of pain the morning after my first go...

Have you considered exercising at home?

I do 100 sit-ups (without holding my legs straight down on the floor by anything else than my muscle power) and 60 push-ups... it can be done in 15-20 minutes every day before shower...

Hi all,

Hmmm...

Any more info of that Martin (I don't recall reading anything about this in the first place)?

RAF grounds Typhoons after ejector seat death

By Guardian UK

Entire fleet of fighter jets ordered not to fly as engineers inspect harness system following death of Spanish pilot

Typhoon fighter jet. The entire RAF fleet has been grounded after a Spanish air force pilot died using his ejection seat:

The RAF's entire fleet of Typhoon fighter jets has been grounded after a pilot fell to his death using his ejection seat, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) confirmed today.

All 64 planes, one of the UK's most important lines of defence, were ordered not to fly after a crewman from the Spanish airforce died when his parachute came away after he ejected.

Aircraft engineers were today trying to address safety concerns concerning the £1m harness system on the ejector seat. The accident is a major embarrassment for RAF officials who are pushing a deal to buy 40 Typhoons for £2.8bn when the defence budget is under pressure to cut costs.

Pilots at RAF bases in Coningsby, Lincolnshire and Leuchars, in Scotland, were told that in the event of an emergency they would still be ordered to fly. Priority has been given to quick-reaction force Typhoons and the jets guarding the Falklands.

Typhoons in Germany, Spain, Italy, Austria, and Saudi Arabia have also been grounded indefinitely after the fatal accident in Spain during a training flight last month. Typhoons make up the bulk of the RAF's fighter fleet.

An MoD spokesman said: "The safety of our personnel is paramount. As a precaution, non-operational Typhoon flights have temporarily been suspended pending modification."

Fast jets are a different world to mine Leo, I know a few people who are on Typhoon squadrons but I don't talk to them that often. Even if I did know, I'm pretty sure that I'd have to give the 'no comment line'.

It's cute how the article calls it "a major embarrassment", when it should be no such thing.

Well, it is the Guardian

The RAF are the current target of military ire, with the Army and RN stamping their feet and making a lot of noise about how we could do without the RAF. There's not much positive coverage of the amred forces and even less on the RAF. Plenty of negative coverage though, that goes for all three. I'd like to see those journalists try and do those jobs that they're so critical about. The things I could say if I was allowed

EDIT: There's no actual evidence that I can see that the seat is actually to blame. There are quite a few things that could go wrong that have nothing to do with the hardware and everything to do with the seat-stick interface device, or the people responsible for keeping harnesses serviceable.

The UK has always begrudged every penny spent on the armed forces and then wonders why we lose the opening rounds of every war. 'Twas ever thus.

Anyway, I'm reading Casino Royale on my phone. It's peculiar to compare this book, written in 1953, with the Daniel Craig film...

Sadly, that's true. We'd rather spend money on a Welsh National Sheep Polishing Council or similar than spending it on actual things.

Maybe the government is afraid that if we spent money on the military we'd win too quickly?

I imagine the scene at the Mongoose/snake fight before the crane chase scene would be different. Bond talking into his wind-up field telephone for a start

Yeah, it's different. It's so different, in fact, that it's completely absent.

These guys have one of the most critical jobs, and it's very easy for something to go wrong if they don't do their job perfectly every time. Many, many awesome people do this job, but it is the first place I would start looking in an investigation.

our Eurofighters are grounded as well - as are our Tornados and Phantoms. Only the CAP is allowed to fly...

Mmmmm, ribs.  Heading to our favorite local establishment when my lovely wife gets home in about 45 minutes for some "quality time" over food and drink.  Beautiful night to sit outside on the deck.

Had some good cheese-fries?

You know how sometimes you can just tell your opponent in an online game is about 12 years old   I just played a Blood Bowl match online and despite the fact he was winning all I got from him (with plenty of spelling mistakes and text speak) was:
wow, ur such a cheater!
You keep rolling 6s.
You finally missed a block, after 12 attempts.
Another 6!  You're definately cheating.

Then he rage-quit after I tackled his player with the ball despite the fact he was still winning   I don't think he appreciated the comment when I told him I'd hacked the game so he'd only roll 1s.  Sometimes I despair for the youth of today, then I realise that I just don't care about them.  The youth of tomorrow had better not be such whiners though
