ORIGINAL: pws1225 close, if 150 miles is close. it's just a bit north of carrabelle (gotta love the name!) it's a swamp, not a town. it's what florida naturally is when you're not trying to sell it to a bunch of yankees wanting to retire where it doesn't snow. unfortunately, with a name like tate's hell, sales haven't been so good. Grew up in Florida. Brooksville, Dade City, and Lutz, when it was a store, gas station, the Brahma Restaurant and ten houses. Lived at the grove on County Line Road. Then off to Tampa. Damn, Florida, back then, was something special. We had the Hillsborough River, the Withlacoochie, dark with river oaks and moss; Thonotoasassa Springs and Crystal River, sweet and crystal clear from the limestone filtration off Georgia's runoff. Swiming with Manatees, oysters fresh from the beds off the back yard. And we were seriously hemi, demi, semi, kinda Cubano, back in the 50s/60s. Supper was late, around 9:00, because that's how it was, and weekends it was maybe 11:00 at Las Novedades with friends; Fado, Brandy and Coronas for the men, maybe a tinto and a Rubosto for me. Manny Garcia was the Mayor and supported strongly by my Confederate ancestry. I fell deeply in love with Nancy Delapenna, and one of my best friends was (is) Gus Garces. Used to be was, Florida was ok. Then came .... the Federal Govt. But, coming home. Not to FL, but at least the Gulf Coast. Moving to Mobile AL. Close to P'cola, and sailable to Destin from the Rigolets. Just across the bridge from Mobile Yacht Club and just a hop, skip and a jump from Ponchartrain YC. Lookin forward to seeing ya'll in the flesh, as it were. Well then, welcome back home. I think you'll find this part of Florida is about as close to what you knew growing up as you'll find anywhere.
