It was a good run. I'm not going to bother to look up exactly how long the battle lasted, but it did seem to tie up a lot of Japanese forces and KB for quite a while. Loss ratio at sea did look pretty good as well, especially in the later parts of the battle, so overall you can be quite proud of yourself I think. Now it's time to make the next Alamo.

In other news...

This is the situation in NW Oz, a fulkl size infantry unti as well as tanks are closing in on Katherine. They've got to be knackered and pushed for supply across all the desert, right? Right?

I agree. New....well, new whatever...served as your breakwater for the IJ tide. You both did well using it to punish JJ for as long as you did.

WRT Katherine-the rules for transcontinental trail supply differ patch by patch. Under which patch did you guys start this up? If prior to patch III, you're hosed-they can walk to the middle of Australia on trail and still have plenty of supply. Northern Australia is borked prior to the most recent patch(es).

Now I know how they're fighting in Kunming with a supply trail across the mountains back into Burma.

At least now 1) you guys have more force concentrated in one place and 2) the LYB that did the felling will not be in any shape to try again for a bit and 3) this iirc this was not supposed to be the mother of all battles. This was supposed to stop the LYB advance and tie up his forces (which it did admirably).

Right. This is an extremely silly move designed to get you to commit forces away from Noumea.

We'll raise the alert level in Katherine to "Make a cup of tea".

The old joke for the desert tank crews was asking for "permission to brew up"... of course, the term "brew up" was also slang for "catching on fire" (esp. after taking a direct hit)...

Let's hope the "brewing up" is the tea kind in this case!

EDIT: The terrain around Katherine looks rather like desert, except for the area around a rather impressive river and gorge

I think the HQ's will come back on their own. The loss of the port svc detachments is a tiny sting.

Ugggh. There has been a great "disturbance" in the force.

No...other than air units. I should definitely have saved VII Bomber Command HQ as I have may groups flagged to the unit. I was under the mistaken assumption that some units might retreat to La Foa. Uggh. If the second Jap attack had been defered one more day, the armor would have prevented disaster.

The real blow will be the fall of La Foa, which is now inevitable. 25,000 troops. An evac operation would be doomed without carriers and the air groups are in no condition to fight.

I moved in some PBY's to get some remnants out and Hornet is on the way to allow the fly off of the dive bombers and carrier capable fighters from La Foa.

That is discouraging for Noumea to fall even after the Jap carriers were driven off. Still....one musn't be a big girl's blouse...musn't one?

I need to get off cadres from La Foa and evacuate the two Bn on Tanna and get off as many planes and pilots as I can.

Then the defences of North Island and Fiji need to be strengthened though it is hard to believe any attack will occur soon after the Jap carriers got kicked in the cajones like that.

The HQ will come back on its own - I forget the time period.

Having air units report to an air HQ does nothing. Don't waste PP's on it. Having any units report to any HQ does nothing (aside from making them be restricted or unrestricted). Don't waste PP's on it.

Feel better?

I doubt there's much celebration in LYB-land. Another such victory, and they're ruined.

No turn yet in the inbox. This could mean Zuikaku, Juno and Hiryu sunk....or it could be the honey-do list...or one of the Jap admirals is taking his prep for his colonoscopy and cant sit at the keyboard long enough....

So, I decide to get my daughter out of the house to achieve a cease fire in the Battle of the XX Titans. I take her shopping and buy her some clothes and shoes....that usually makes females happy....right? Anyway, I drop her off in Laguna Beach to see her deadbeat boyfriend and it is a beautiful day so I decide to read on the boardwalk at main beach. I pick up a $9 copy of Miracle at Midway and start reading. I am reading about faint IJN praise for the Coral Sea operation and there is an evangelical surfer lecturing 3 guys to my left. They are listening attentively as he talks about how he gave up the waves for Jesus. The guy is just a word machine. I go back to my reading and I am reading about defensive preparations on Midway and, when I look up, two young women who have been on the beach are getting ready to leave. One of them has a really, really nice body which has been enhanced by the E. I Dupont de Nemours company. Also, her dentist would be happy because she flosses regularly if you catch my drift. I am powerless. I start watching the show. So do the three guys to my left. It is an entirely intentional show too. She takes about 3 minutes to put on this little cover-up thing, arching her back and advertising her wares the whole time. The two woman are now done prepping and begin heading up the beach right at me and the evangelical surfer. The tension rises. Muscles involuntarily flex. Guts suck in. Now the work of the chemists at Dupont comes into full view. I think to myself, "science is great". The deadly cargo approaches. Madre de Dios! They mean to climb up on the boardwalk right between us! How long do I dare look? At the last second they turn to starboard and will pass right in front of the evangelist. His voice rises half an octave. Cleverly, he calls to his proteges, "Let us pray". They bow their heads...sort of. He starts the Lord's prayer..."Our Father..".

The jiggling becomes almost unbearable. The little cover-up thing is hung up on the floss holder on one side so the show doesn't end as they pass by. This is it..perigee..point of closest approach to the group to my left. His voice grows louder..."...AND LEAD US NOT INTO TEMPTATION"....

I say a prayer myself, "Thank you Jesus for the hot weather and the
E. I Dupont de Nemours company."
