Ok, my decision has been made; I'll let you wait in some suspense until the next turn is ready

Andy is howling about the piss poor performance of his subs; all his latest torp hits have been duds, even those made by Dutch boats.
Feel his pain...but otherwhise perfectly happy about it.

Air Combat

We gun down numerous enemy planes over Nuku today!
Quite satisfactory.

In Burma Andy launches massive sweeps and heavy bomber missions against Mandalay.
Think I've found the way to handle these now. The first sweeps only met slight resistance,
when the bombers droned in 30 Tojo's suddenly reacted to the enemy activity and gunned down numerous Wellington's and even a B-17.
Since we have 458 engineers at Mandalay we repair damage rapidly and today's raids didn't cause much havoc as weather was poor.

Andy said it was impossible to build and reinforce Tennant Creek since we kept it completely suppressed.
He also noted that he could launch a massive offensive into Northern Oz but that the cost was considered to steep for the time being.

No sign of any Allied ships near the Marquesas today; Andy ran for it!

Instead we had heavy air attacks on Taung Gyi in Burma. Allied bombers closed down the field and destroyed some 20 fighters on the ground.
We lost another 17 ac in A2A while shooting down a similar number of enemy ac.

Seems like I'm beating back the sub attack around the Home Islands.
Several subs reported sunk the last turns, not sure it's correct but pretty sure we've hit a few quite hard.

Everything is hanging in the balance; attacks - counterattacks and parry.
Guess this is when the game is most evenly balanced!

Just caught up again after your holiday PzB , that was a very close call you made in the marquesas , since Andy legged it he's lost a fair bit of time for a counter invasion assuming he has to re-prep his invasions troops elsewhere. Or he's just being cowardly (very un scots like) .

Thanks again for this AAR , most enjoyable.

Thx Rob, got some tan to last another long British winter I hope!?

Not sure if Andy has run for it, nevertheless I'm using the opportunity he's given us to hand out a few beatings.
Today we invade his main base in the Marquesas; afraid we may struggle as my inf regiment only has 36 preparation.
- If there are only base forces we should do it. Sent in battleships to bombard first and gave the invasion TF a heavy cruiser for support.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR Dec 20, 42

Surface Combat

Andy really hates to let go; sent in a strong surface group to wipe out the presence at Nuku Hiva.
I only used a light cruiser and a destroyer to defend the transport unloading there.
Amazingly they fended well for themselves, we lost a small minelayer but the LSD survived and completed unloading.

This turn saw no enemy activity in Burma or the Marquesas, that's a good sign!
So we focus on our invasion of Hiva Oa!

There were no attacks on the first turn; this is not an atoll and obviously there are no Allied units able to bombard here.
That's good news! We have spotted ca 2000 enemy troops but I've only identified a base force unit.
Tomorrow we have to land the remainder of the regiment; will give it some time to rest before attacking.

My guess is that it is not supplies that are being flown in, but the remainder of the Raider Battalion.

That may be correct. Didn't think Andy would have enough Catalina's to fly in so many troops but today our LRCAP shot down 5 Hudson III (LR).
Assume these are long range transports operating out of Tahiti.

Ok Christmas Eve; no major assaults this turn!

We're getting close to the end of 1942 - and the happy times.
After running wild for a year the balance is slowly changing in favor of the Allies.

1943 will probably be the year the war hangs in the balance.
44 will be the year when the Allied advance on Japan will get into high gear.
45 will be a fight for survival and 46 I don't want to think about

It's time to look back and evaluate the previous actions.
- We conquered the historical conquests with ease
- We failed to conquer Australia and had to settle for 2/3rds which shrank to half.
- The conquest of the Line Islands was a good achievement and the Marquese islands is merely an expansion on this operation
- The operations in Burma have grown out of any proportions; first threatened by a massive Allied assault we managed to halt this assault and we're now having a stand off

We came close to destroying the US carrier fleet in Sydney but had to settle for one.
Numerous enemy carriers have been torpedoed but only a CVE was sunk.
The Mini KB got the hammer and we lost a second class Junyo carrier and a few light carriers.

The decisive naval victory battle has not taken place, but it could have happened at least twice; south of Perth and now near the Marquese islands.

Can't say the achievement has been stunning but it hasn't been a disaster either.

Hiva Oa is isolated island. 3-day bombardment by 2BBs, and few DDs, at point-blank, should disable even latrines. The only problem are mines. Last guns were destroyed by landing, obviously.

Plus, maybe Allied CVs will show up, to catch bombarding fleet

Hm, well bombardments have been nerfed too much I'm afraid.
In my last games I've had whole battle fleets bombarding and the only casualty has been Al's chimney

Here is da grande plan for X-mas entertainment:

Your bombardments at Hiva Oa caused disruption. That's a big part of attacking.

Yeah, that would have been terrible
- In AE the only thing that counts is adjusted AV.
Not sure if disruption has any effect on this at all....if it has it's a small one.

It's incredible; we got full detction levels and neither sea or air bombardments
have any effect on Hiva Oa! This time 93 crack KB bombers hit the place; ZERO casualties.

Afternoon Air attack on Hiva Oa , at 192,169
Weather in hex: Thunderstorms

Raid spotted at 26 NM, estimated altitude 18,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 9 minutes

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 16
B5N2 Kate x 45
D3A1 Val x 48

Japanese aircraft losses
B5N2 Kate: 4 damaged
D3A1 Val: 5 damaged

Airbase hits 4
Runway hits 16

Bombers going after an airfield are not going to cause many casualties. Even ground attacks will not cause many casualties in non-clear terrain. More important is disruption.

To have the most effective bombardments, you need to set the float planes on your bombarders to night recon of the target. They then act as spotters. I seem to have reasonable results when I do that, and also have a 9/10 detect level. (Reasonable = less damage than the nukes of Witp-classic but enough to make it well worthwhile)

It will help a lot if you will put one of the seaplane units on night recon.

Only for the assault phase. Adjusted AV doesn't do anything for the fire phase. This can be important because if you outnumber the opponent and/or have better firepower and/or have more resilient units (e.g., full divisions) you can come out ahead even if the odds look crappy. Even a 1 to 10 can be productive under the right circumstances. But you need to keep an eye on the loss ratio from the attacks.

I find that I have to have a float from each ship on recon. I haven't yet seen a float plane spotting for any ship except the one it is based on. Have I just had bad die rolls?

I think just one is enough - it says it is spotting for one ship, but the entire Bombardment goes well:

Engineers: 0 destroyed, 7 disabled

Resources hits 1
Airbase hits 9
Airbase supply hits 7
Runway hits 56
Port hits 13
Port fuel hits 7
Port supply hits 2

CL Caledon firing at Johore Bahru

I feel certain that the Walrus really spotted for all of them to get that kind of result.

When Michael explained the code, he said as long as one plane is on recon, doesn't even matter if it's day or night they just check for the mission assignment. Consider that you can't always predict if the attack will go in during night or daylight, it's good the way they did it.

That may be the way that Michael intended, but I have noticed that I get much better night bombardments using a night flying recon float plane. I just put one unit on night and one unit on day and I am covered.

Will try night recon next time; honestly I would think that army spotters ashore could do that job but good tip!

All the dive bombers were set to ground attack while all the torpedo bombers were set to airfield attack.
180 crack KB bombers caused nill casualties together. Same did bombardments and defensive AV was trebled.

Didn't know Nuku Oa was a mountain resort, any attacks in jungle or rough terrain requires enormous odds to succeed.
The biggest challenge is that the offensive AV seems to be reduced in accord with how the defenders combat value is increased.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR Dec 26, 42

Air Combat

We loose 17 bombers that lost their escort over Myitkyina today; We swept the place and had 15 Nicks on LRCAP and they claimed some enemies but in total
we lost 46 to the enemy's 19 ac today.

Our ground pounders at Shwebo inflicted rather heavy casualties today, making me to believe the enemy is on the march! To face us or to retreat?

I will skip all the air combat reports from Burma today and jump to the most interesting part: Mini KB Strikes!
The Mini KB without the escort carriers includes only the Junyo and 2 CVL's, not a great force but it still wields a punch.

Unfortunately the biggest convoy was in a rain squall in the PM turn so we only obliterated a smaller convoy with our biggest strike.

Ground Combat

Our armored division was stopped dead in their tracks by the jungle and Chindits that were airlifted in.
Andy captured the dot base Bhama to our rare with the same Chindit unit. My hope was that the tank div would shock attack
as it pursued across the river. This didn't happen and with that our chance of a victory here also waned. If nothing else we
attracted plenty attention and spent Andy's airborne reserve.
