Greetings all,

Although RL does not allow me to do a more detailed AAR, I will try to make one big post per month at the very least. I know it is not as palatable or as exciting as one post every few days, but I am sure the other three players would raise their complaints if I delayed my turn even more just because I am thinking, writing, and posting an AAR. But I digress... let us begin. Just understand that this AAR will be written from my point of view as the player in charge of logistics so, if it is not too exciting at times, please forgive me.

The scenario is Da Big Babes, 7th December start, non-historical first turn. The Allied team consists of vettim89 and Nomad, both excellent player that are already making us sweat, while the Japanese team consists of guctony and myself (Kitakami). I do not consider myself a great player, but I enjoy the game immensely and will do my best.

Originally, guctony took control of the IJN, while I took control of the IJA. But it was not easy going with my limited time, so we decided for a different split after a few turns: I now control the Home Islands, Korea, Manchuria and China, while my partner controls the rest. I also take care of most of the Empire's logistics so, if we lose because of a lack of war materiel, it will be my fault alone.

Point One:

As Japan, you can win the game by being good at combat but you will definitely loose if you are not extremely good at logistics. So I decided to tighten the belt at the beginning, hoping that we will be better off long-term. That meant doing several things:

1. All To'su hulls either have been converted or soon will be converted to xACMs. This is a one-way conversion, and I do that on purpose. It is the only class that can be converted to ACMs and, with defensive minefields degrading, and new mines being scarce, I do not intend to waste mines. Defensive minefields will play their part defending from invasions later, if I have anything to say.

2. The Ansyu and Kiso hulls have either been converted to PBs, or will be converted soon. The Kujira and Ha'chi hulls have been ordered to ports in the Home Islands, where they will sit until they can be converted to PBs. I will try to make convoy attack as costly as possible for our esteemed opponents.

3. Sub chasers have been grouped and located at strategic points. They will not do much in the beginning but, with luck, they will help the rest of the ASW system.

4. Minekaze, Momi, Wakatake, and Kamikaze hulls will be converted to APDs. 53 cm torpedoes are not the best in the IJN arsenal, so loosing that capability is not a grat loss, but gaining 18-knot escorts (for 18-knot transports) is, in my opinion, great gain. APDs faster than 24 knots will probably be used for fast transport task forces instead of as escorts.

Point Two:

Japan must be as efficient in its refitting as possible. So I will make it a point to send all ships to the yards as soon as refits become available. I know that means not letting my partner play with all the toys all the time, but I believe that it will help preserve those toys so, in the long run, he will get more mileage out of them.
Point Three:

Japanese airframe and engine production is an art form. Especially when losses are high, nothing must be wasted. In this game, it means several things:

1. Production of Ha-32 engines is critical at start. It will take months to ramp it up to the levels needed. Meanwhile, G3M3 Nell (Ha-33 engine) and Ki-48-Ib Lily (Ha-35 engine) will be built. Some people consider building one or both of those airframes a waste of resources, but I disagree. There is not enough production of G4M1 Betty or Ki-21-IIa Sally planes (due to lack of engines) to cover losses, much less to upgrade air units. Thus, the other two models become necessary. After the Ki-49-Ia and the Ki-48-II become available in April of 42, things should become easier. The first model helps because it uses a different engine, and the second one because it is armored.

2. All modern planes in units stationed in Manchukuo and not leaving the theater are replaced by older planes. At least in bombers, that will help cover some of the initial slack.

Point Three:

Japan's chokepoint is not planes as much as trained pilots so, from the beginning, the pilot training program must be, as everything else, as efficient as possible. That means putting a large number of air units on training, and transferring pilots to the reserves. Also, all pilots that reach an experience level of 81 will be sent to TRACOM.


Now, for the happenings of December, 1941:

The Pearl Harbor attack was one of the worst attacks I have ever seen, period. My analysis of the combat reports indicate that we did not sink even one BB. The only bright point of that day is that as far as my analysis of things can show, both the Prince of Wales and the Repulse were sunk on that day. Those two would have been far more dangerous to our operations that all the BBs in Pearl combined.

My partner suggested what he calls the "Mersing Gambit". I had never tried it in the past, so I agreed to it. We decided that doing that on turn one would have been ahistorical, so we settled for a turn 3 (I believe) invasion. This may be a good point to write that my partner is particularly aggressive. If we win, it will be because he cooked up unusually interesting ways to make the Allies' lives miserable.

Allied losses on their retreat from the Philippines were heavy. They included AVD William B. Preston, ASs Otus and Holland, AV Langley, TKs Mobilfuel, Manatawny, Gertrude Kellogg and Mindanao, and a couple of xAPs. The real treat, which occurred on the 23rd, was the bombing and, if I am correct sinking, of CV Lexington. Lady Lex had the misfortune of being found by Kido Butai, and was sent to the bottom along CAs Portland and Astoria. That gives me some respite.

But our aggressiveness had a price. Five troop transports, two mine cruisers, half a dozen subs, over 40 transports and other IJN units are decorating the bottom of the Pacific Ocean. That, in itself, is not that bad. But if you add the fact that Japan lost over 300 planes in the first month, I believe I have reason to worry. Still, it may be because my playing style is much more cautious, but I do think that we can ill afford to maintain that attrition rate.

China has been an interesting theater. I had never seen a brave Sir Robyn in that theater and, personally, I consider it unnecessary, at least in the scope I am seeing. We have lost Ichang, which I vacated, because I have not found a way to hold it yet but besides that, I have picked up several Chinese without damage to their production... which is the one thing I would prefer not to happen as an Allied player. There are two side effects of this. First, supply levels in China are shifting in my favor without much loss and, second, I am conducting operations that may bring some grief to our esteemed opponents. I will not take undue risks, but I think I can make more gains than the Allies would like us to make.

The following are some bases we have taken that may be of interest: Johnston Island, Rabaul, and Hong Kong. Singapore and Clark Field are under attack, and both should fall soon. There are other operations going on as I write this, but I will write about them in my next monthly report. There is something to be said in favor of discretion :)

The one thing that is driving the Japanese side to distraction is the much lowered air support. So much so that we have inadvertently left an airbase without any, just because we are trying to move more to frontline bases. But I am sure that will soon pass, as we get used to checking air and naval support on each and every important stack.

All in all, a very enjoyable game month for me and, hopefully, for the other players too. I wish I could do justice to this AAR but, sadly, I do not have the time.

Status: offline 		Great writing Kitakami You leaved few points to mentioned.

First I am very lucky to Have partner Like Kitakami. I feel in some ways we complete our weak attributes. Such as I do play aggrassive and careless He is through and detailed. I am agressive and He is Cautious.

Small things to mention: Early destruction of Allied CV was some luck and a trap. I know the Allied tendency to capture Two IJN AMCs in the south so moved them some where where they would be discovered the crossed my fingers.

We were lucky and we have found it by our patrol subs far away an luckly I plot a good crash course.

Note for Da Big Babe. Someting is different in land war model. I feel it is more costy to attack to protected places.

Our Clark field and Hong kong attack took more then it should. And Singapure river crossing cost very large attrition penalty

Which meaned Mersing Gambit could not be put in to good use. Also we had to decide with my Partner to divide forces as it is now. Because I discovered that Any agrassive player needs both IJA and IJN to be agressive. If they did not compete with each other They quite complete each others week sides.

Status: offline 		I find myself though chance or mishap in command of considerable Japanese forces in early Janaury 1942. The previous commander has laid the foundations for a considerable empire, but there is much work to be done. Despite promising myself some more "family" time i once again am drawn into another conflict.

Situtational Overview:

The Japanese have just taken Nadi in Fiji and are at the door of Suva. A number of bases towards Rabual have been captured (Lunga, Lugainville) but the area is not secure. Port Moresby is in Japanese hands. Heading westward, we have a few bases in the DEI around Ambon, but not Ambon itself. We have most of Malaya, but not the Jewel that is Singapore. Manilla is ours but not Bataan where a considerable allied force is trapped.

Assessment:
Good progress but infrastructure is lacking. We must consolidate and take the bases within our sphere. We must build our bases up. Our support is out of position to allow this.

Ok lets talk about Singapore. Yes a Japanese cruiser force visited the place ( last turn), no - none survived and no - i didn't mean to send them there. It is bad enough to lose ships stupidly on your own. When you have a partner it is even worse. The only good that can come out of this is if our opponents underestimate the Japanese as a result :) Nevermind - the war continues.

Whilst i have circled the areas i want to consolidate/capture next, considerable efforts are also going into the capture of Singapore, Bataan and from there the DEI. This is pretty standard stuff. Burma is a bit of an unknown at the moment, but we shall move into there in force soon. With 30+ units in Palembang that could be quite a fight. Singapore first tho, which we have 4 divisions earmarked for. Afterwards we will need troops from Philipines and Malaya to take Palembang and move into Burma. The precise disposition will depend on events...

It looks like Ambon is pretty empty. In fact most of the DEI looks empty, except Palembang which has 49 units in it. i suspect a stand there :))).

If i just enter Palembang and don't attack (Seige) do the oil/refinery centers take damage? I mean its not like the fuel will go anywhere. Starve em for a month then see if theres any fight left!??? If it is a single centre stand the rest of the DEI will fall pdq.

I must also locate the air units. i strongly believe they are training for anti naval combat, but it would be useful to find where all those bombers are right now. There is no allied air search at or near Ambon. Maybe speed this operation up. (regiment en-route to Ambon already)

Status: offline 		Decent turn. Attack at Singapore went well taking down another level of forts (2:1 i think). Units have high fatigue so will be rested for a day or two and then it should fall. Attack at Pago Pago, took down forts as well - i have low fatigue here so will shock attack and hopefully take it. Lost a couple more damaged xAP's from this attack going home.
Attack at Bataan was 1:3 but about even in losses. I think i'll withdraw a couple of divisins and lets the allies starve here.

I'm looking to up the tempo a bit in the Ambon region as it looks deserted. Have a cruiser force and light carrier force covering operations. No allied air search tho as i'm unspotted. lack of air search is telling i think.

I think i'll have 5 divisions for Palembang. I'm starting to recon Java to see how complete the pull out is. I did find some allied fighters and ships at Oosthaven (some betties got mauled- have reduced the range they will attack at)... maybe everything is heading to Palembang???

Prep starts for Palembang - 4 divisions from Singapore assigned so far. Still need to work out best way to take this without wrecking the oil and refineries there. Wonder what the allied AV is.

Division preps for Noumea

Semi KB and Transports head for Johnson Island. Hopeful to catch Allied bombardent fleet that visits every now and then. Hopefully i'll get the timing right. We have 4 useful units out of supply and not doing much here.

Convoy arrives at Lungaville to begin base build up.

Need to decide approach after capture of these areas - predicted for taking a month - 2 months depending on Palembang. Don't really want to expand a whole lot more but don't want to hand initiative over to allies that early in the war.

highlight is we invaded Ambon and hit an allied cruiser force in S.Pac. Allies like to bombard the hapless Japanese so i positioned
demi KB to take them out. Yes it was planned :) No i didn't do the damage i hoped!!!! Predictability kills. Thats why my small invasion forces are pretty chaotic!

Status: offline 		Been away for a little while on the family holiday. A few turns have passed so i'll so a quick update on what happened.....

not much, allied cruisers bumped into some Japanese carriers near Johnson Island after bombarding the aforementioned island, inconclusive naval engagement followed by Japanese air strikes in the air phase. Overall Sunk ?1 CA ?1CL a DD or two and about 4 DM's. Japanese carriers withdrawing due to lack of torpedoes and partial evacuation of Johnson island begun (too many units there for no purpose)

Fiji group is almost completely taken

Bataan is under seige

Plans for Palembang are underway. I think i'll have a landing at Oosthaven - about 5 full division which will move to Palembang. As it looks like just about everything is in Palembang rest of DEI will be taken over next month without too much trouble. Prep for Oosthaven is underway, minesweepers on way to Merak. BIt of a risk but maybe i'll see what naval assets the allies have lurking around. Japanese carriers are en-route but a little way off (well not even a Truk yet).

In S Pac i will raid with carriers towards New Zealand and then withdraw the carriers to form up full KB again.

Not the best of turns as 4 DMS sent towards Merak arrive on the scene the turn the allies activate their air attacks and are sunk. Also whilst i thought Djambi had been reconned and was empty, an air assault here ran into 4 allied ground units. I am quandried about Palembang. The allies have quite a few of the nasty Swordfish and Wildebeats stockpiled. The allies have withdrawn their bombers from Palembang apparently after succesful night attacks on the airbase.

Thinking through again three options

1) Land in Palembang
2) Oosthaven - need to clear Merak of mines first - also open to air attack
3) Tandjo... - would take over a month to walk down but relatively safe landing spot

It will take a few days to get the neccessary transports in place and for carrier support to arrive. In the meantime i will attrit the allied air force and look for the bomber base to pound into the ground. No final decsion has been made.

Status: offline 		A few days have passed. I'll try to do a more detailed report next turn but the higlights have been:

- Auckland was port attacked for 3 consecutive turns by 3 fleet carriers. A substantial allied surface fleet was cowering in the harbour. Bombs were reported hitting numerous carriers, oops sorry got all Tokyo Rose there... but 3-4 allied heavy cruisers and 2-3 Light cruisers took bomb hits. Hopefully takes them out of the battle for a few months. Submarines on the way to catch them if they move out of harbour. The carriers are returning to Fiji and then will head towards Truk and eventually rejoin the rest of the KB.

- Sumatra... allied air force here reaches 150 fighters and 100 bombers between Palembang and Oosthaven. Both these locations have large numbers of allied units. Japanese air drop at Benkoelen is rebuffed but Padang is captured. Japanese troops sent around the island of Sumatra to land at Benkoelen. Diversionary forces sent towards Palembang. Japanese air units (Oscars) sent to Padang to cover ampib fleet and carrier forces/surface forces in place as well.

- Sweeps of Palembang have prooved ineffectual. This may be down to range and height, but whatever the reason we will not gain air superioritory over Palembang by sweeping. We are moving small empty transport fleets with air cover near to Palembang to provoke allied air attacks and engage on better terms for the Japanese. Not been succesful in evoking a response so far.

Status: offline 		Bad news of the day, an allied sub puts three torps into Chiyoda in the DEI. Highly likely it will sink which is not good.

Invasion of Sumatra. With Padang taken the first division arrives but doesn't start unloading. A small CVL fleet is covering and a surface force is covering the landing. Padang has an airfield so Oscars are in theatre to provide air cover. I think this is outside allied fighter range so am not too worried about the arial threat. An allied surface force is a much bigger threat, especially if the RN turns up en masse. Still 3 fleet carriers are in the DEI near Ambon so should be at Sumatra soon. Also Japanese air search is active and nothing spotted yet.

Diversionary landing craft (empty) have entered Palembang Harbour and should continue to distract allied air units. An empty tranpsort fleet at Sinkep should also divert allied air.

Efforts have been made to make the allies believe that Benkoelen is a target and may further distract or dilute any allied response to the landings about to take place at Padang.

If we can get 4+ divisions ashore at Padang it will take a couple of weeks to reach Palembang, but we may detour to other places first. The strategy is not to allow the allies the chance to really use their air. Invasions in Java and the rest of the DEI should deny alternative airbases for the allies.

focus remains at Padang. Half a Japanese division disembarks, light carriers remain nearby... and spot a couple of allied surface fleets heading towards the invasion zone. One fleet contains approx 6 ships, including at least 2 CL's - one of which is hit by 2 torps from Kates. The other surface fleet appears to be 2 CA's, which are both missed by Kate torps. Covering Padang we have a small fleet of a BB and 4 escorts. Probably just enough. A larger fleet with a BB, CA and escorts is moving at flank speed to Padanag and should get there in the day. I'm expecting the 2 allied naval fleets to raid Padang. the surface fleet should see them off. Multiple transport fleets are inbound to Padang. This could go very badly if something has been missed or we get unlucky. At least the follow up transports are unspotted as yet. Oscars at Padang should nullify significant threat from the air.

Maybe the allies will back off, i wouldn't...!

Status: offline 		Not such a good turn. As predicted the allies throw the 2 cruiser task forces at Padang. The Exeter and Glasgow ( + 2DDs) run into a Japanese CL and DD force a couple of times, the Japanese coming off worse, The cruiser then enter Padang and ecounter ?Kirishima and exorts which drives them off. The other allied force is 5 CL's and enters Padang encountering the beat up Japanese CL and DD. Thats it for the night, during the day naval phase a Japanese transport fleet encounters the allied 5 CL fleet and losses 9 loaded transports - about a divisions worth of troops. A couple more transports will be lost. The transports were carrying 2 full Japanese divisions. Other transports fleets with support troops are spared. The Japanese BB fleet from the north sweeps down and encounters the Exeter and Glasgow - sinking them both.

Quiet turn. Troops unload at Padang. Allied night attacks hit a couple of transports  in Singapore - will put some fighters on night patrol. Transports ready to invade Java. Intilligence estimates small chance of allied Naval interference here but have a number of fleet carriers in vicinity if they try.

Spotted large 16,000 men unit - british - near Palembang. Its going to be a long fight for that place. Still if i'm not mistaken fuel and oil will continue to be produced there and just stockpile up - until we enter the city? May well end up taking our time over it, i'd like to send a commando unit in to see what exactly is there. At least now Sumatra should be isolated completely

Another quiet turn. The Battleship Haruna is hit by a torp from an alled submarine. It does 6 float damage. Allied bombers attack Singapore and hit some more ships. An administrative error meant that the fighters didn't recieve their order to patrol at night. The adminstrative department involved are digging latrines now.

Invasion of Java begins at the Southern Tip, covered by half the KB.

Units begin the move out of Padang. My estimate of 1 lost division looks about right. bah humbug. Maybe 14 transport ship lost in total (has some more sinkings from fire/damage), about half of them good ones.

Units in Fiji area are beggining to move to their defensive positions and contruction units put in place to build the airebases needed.

Probing attack at Battan ordered.

So where next? Sumtra may take a little time but otherwise everything is well. The allies have pulled back or concentrated in Sumatra so in a month or so the Japanese will be ready for their next assault. Where should this be? Frankly i think we have the defensive perimeter we need so future operations should be to seriously hamper the allied ability to counterstike. Ideally a carrier victory would achieve this. Maybe Columbo would force the RN to come out to play. Lots of BB's and some carriers to sink there and it would restrict the RN. Otherwise push the yanks in the S. Pac :)

Allied fleet approaches Padang and is given a hot welcome. Allied fleet is positioned to conduct a raid on the port (8 hexes away). The Japanese have a Battleshp fleet in the port so i'm not that worried. I think these are RN assets from India. Fast ones. This means that slower ones (Carriers and Battleships) may also be approaching. The light cariers are ordered south to avoid any heavy RN elements and from the south 3 Japanese fleet carriers steam north. If the RN is on the way i may just catch them nicely. I don';t think the RN carrier fleet can stand against 3 CV and 2 CVL of the Japanese.

Allies sweep Sinkep which had Oscars on the airfield and LRCAP from Singapore. Over the day losses are 2:1 or better in the allied favour. This was the worst result of the day. The large concentration of allied fighters in Palembang is a real problem. Japanese sweeps over Palembang result in 2:1 in the allied favour, and as seen above the allies can sweep the nearest Japanese base with similar results. Sweeps are limited to the second best Man band, which is 20K mostly, CAPS are not.

I think this vindicates the decision not to invade Palembang directly. Allies air would have murdered the Japanese Transport fleet. Same for Oosthaven.

The Padang invasion has cost 15 ish transports now and a CL and DD, but the allies have lost a CA, 1-2 CL and maybe 2 more CL this turn. CA's and CL's are more valuable than AMC and xAP whatever the point count says.

Other news, in what the Division involved reagrds as FUBAR i have turned aroung an amphib fleet about to land at Noumea on the grounds it is empty (i have nav guard unit in dot hex next to it and no allied units shown in Noumea) to sail all the way back to Singapore.
It went there from the Phillipines because i expected some restance in Noumea. With Noumea empty and the losses at Padang, itis better used for the battles to come at Sumatra. let em be sea sick.

Probing attack at Bataan comes off ok. We had 1:1 initial odds and whilst took twice as many casualties - we'll rest and get them back up + took down a level of forts. Noted that the allies are not low on supply just yet.

Status: offline 		Been a couple of turns, the highlights have been the carrier fleet near Padang sunk a couple of allied CL's who tried to intervene at Padang. The landings there are complete and the transports have retired to the the port to the north to unload their supplies. So far they are unspotted so i think they should be safe. The 3 fleet carriers merged with the 2 light carriers and are unspotted. However aircraft from Soryu parciipated in the sinking of 2 damaged CL's. The aircraft involved were kates - the same as used on the light carriers. Maybe the allies will make the connection, maybe not. Maybe there are allied ships west of Sumatra worth sinking, maybe not.

Fiji is pacified. A guard unit marches towards Noumea.

2 regiments march towards Soerbaja. The alles have a reported 6k troops there so it should fall easily enough.


Lots of allied troop movements in Sumatra. I suspect they don't appreciate the amount of troops the Japanese have unloaded there. It doesn't matter (whether they have underestimated the japanese or not), Sumatra will fall. I estimate a 2000av assault on Palembang will be required. We''ll scout the city before we move in.

Status: offline 		More quiet turns. The breakout from Padang continues. Mopping up of allied bases around the map continues. Some Betties launched a decent port raid on Soerjaba and hit half a dozen subs. Sweeps over Palembang have refused to fly - odd.
