Greetings all,

I have just bought this simulation and am playing my first game learning the ropes, very interesting and comprehensive! I chose to invade an opponents home world (Haakonish) which had 2 troops made and about 6 waiting to be built and que'd up. I landed with 11 units, mixed human and mortalen; and was eliminated, whilst only killing three of the enemy units. I think one of the 'being built units'' was completed during the fight. Is there a trick I'm missing here rather than just click on the enemy world and say land troops? or was the problem that the unbuilt units still counted??? Most reports I have read here and in the AAR's seem to think two to one is good odds, whilst the 3 to 1 I had should have been overkill! Your thoughts/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Tony

Not trying to make fun or anything, but did you load troops onto your troop carriers? I did this once, so I speak from experiance. but seeing how you said 3-1 odd, I am guessing you have. I am not familiar with the races so not shure if they are super strong in the troop department. I don't think any race is, so sorry I can't be of any help.

The extra factor is planet population. Homeworlds are even harder to capture because of their population.

All, thank you for your responses. I suspected that the massive pop may have something to do with it. Any idea on the sorts of ratios needed when hitting the pop as well? Thank you.

Tony luke;

From my experiences so far, a Homeworlds' population (any planet actually) generates a "militia" of sorts.
Since the normal Homeworld's population is usually very large (100 mil+) my estimates are that they
would represent 4 to 5 troop units added to what is already there. In addition, if they have been
attacked before and successfully defended the planet, the surviving troops would have a high
strength rating also. I recommend attacking an enemy Homeworld with sufficient numbers... Ten to
Twenty Troops minimum.

to add to this, if you are on the loosing side of a battle it usually goes really badly very quickly, mostly because your forces seem to surrender when it looks hopeless, so you dont end up destroying as many of their troops as you might like

If I remember correctly it was like one militia troop every 2 billion population.

Troops become stronger at the planets they can inhabit by default.

Automatic Militias and troops becomng stronger over time/with experience probably goes a long way to why I have yet to win a 3 way troop battle (where both I and an AI player invade the same planet around the same time). I have done it 4 or 5 times and every time the last troop from the invaded side dies the planet switches over to the AI player. I wasn't being very careful about those invasions. While the other invader often didn't have more troops than me I think I will have more luck if I bring a truely overhwhelming force (which is hard when you lose upwards of 30 troops at a time several times because you keep losing 3 way land battles).
