Intercom Voice, Sexretary (probaby with ample bosom): It's Mr. Buffalo-Head to see you about the PBN project, sir.

Mr. Emmanuel: Ah, yes, send him in. <a 30-something engineer enters the room> Ah, Jim. I'm afraid I have some really bad news. The Navy just pulled the plug on the PBN project. Something about raw materials.

Mr. Buffalo-Head: <he looks crestfallen, his dream of a nickel-plated flying boat in tatters>

Uh-oh. Better not tell Mr. Penny about the loss of the zinc mine either.

You know when you have a vacation planned to the Sierras and you want to get there early for opening day of trout season so you get up early and check the oil and tire pressure and you have the fly poles ready and new tippet and some new caddis emergers and the whole deal and you start the french roast coffee and use the coffee grinder turn on CNN really loud ot wake everyone up and then you go back inside and nobody is packed?

You know that feeling? Well, the skipper of USS Boggs now knows that feeling.

I suppose it is pretty obvious I am waiting on the turn. The good thing about losing a big battle is then you can start planning for the next one.

I beg to differ on you losing the battle. I think that you achieved your strategic objectives quite well.

Delaying Jap advance in South Pacific.......+++

Air losses...............................................+/-
(Hard to say really. Both sides suffered heavy losses of airframes especially.
We loss quite few carrier capable aircraft but the Japs lost quite a few carrier pilots
and aircraft as well)

Surface naval losses................................+/-
(Very heavy cruiser and DD losses for the Allies but the Jap
apparently traded 3 BB's for Mississippi)

Carriers..................................................+++
(Shokaku confirmed, Soryu possibly, Zuikaku
badly hurt)

Ground losses.........................................--
(my guess it will be about 31,000 Allied to 12,000 LYB's)

If the boys at Noumea had held it would have been an epic loss for Japan, but we had to give up the field so, classically, that is a defeat.

I'm certain that the action if not gutted their skilled pilots than significantly reduced their number. Also, do not discount the losses in LBA pilots. Those may be even harder to replace than naval pilots.

Sorry. Thats the price of doing business. I'm sure you would have loved to walk out of it with not a dent to a garbage scow, but given the imbalance in offensive capability at this stage of the war, you had to use what you had. Aside from a few silly die rolls, I think that it went pretty well all things considered.

Anyway, so I make her stay at home and wash windows...so far, so good....well, anyway she must have been watching History Chanel or something....she calls me at work...

Are you busy?

Well, yeah. What's up?

I'm Working on the windows.

Good.

They are really dirty.

Good. Is that what you called about?

No, I thought you might know if Osma bin Ladin is still alive?

What? ...Probably, but nobody is sure. And the other thing? <now convinced this had to be an ice-breaker question>

Oh, I'll just ask you later. You're busy. See you daddy, bye.

I was catching up on your AAR, I saw this and started laughing. My wife asked what was so funny, she read it over my shoulder, and started laughing as well.

I disagree. In this game, the IJAAF LBA pilot losses are easily replaced. The naval pilots may take slightly longer, but only just.

I agree with my red mouse colleague on this one. 3 IJN BBs for the Mississippi is a great deal. Sucks about your cruiser losses though.

I agree, but a pyrrhic victory for Japan on this one.

My Dearest Spri;

A hearty well done on the attack by your Fairey boys in the Lesser and Medium-sized Sundas. Word is they achieved a sterling 79% hit rate. Splendid! I believe they are one of the old Swordfish or Vildabeest squadrons from Singapore. Well worth the effort to get them out of Java some time back.

Given their success, I wonder if you might have a word with Lord Teddy. It seems they are wanted back in Mersah Matruh or some such place by June 1st. Do you know him from a frat party or something? I know of a an international law firm with experience in "offering" gifts as a quid pro quo if you think that might be of help.

I am sending along some B-17 D and E models from Fiji to Brisabane to help out in the Kimberly. I also tasked the P-38's to sweep over Wyndham to see what we are up against. When the 17's at Darwin are reinforced, perhaps we can try to shut down the airfield at Wyndham again.

USS Chicago is ready for action at Melbourne. Perhaps she could join the carrier TF at Sydney (or vice versa).

Warmly;

Fleet Admiral Mandrake;

*******Bridge of USS Boggs, a fast mine sweeper, flagship of a fast transport taffy tasked with evacuating Col. Edson's Marine Raider Bn. from Tanna, 06:50, May 26, 1942*******

In the arc of the small inlet, 5 APD's are loading Edson's men aboard. The plan was to already be at sea by now as the Marine Raider Bn. has no heavy equipment and were trained for mobility....and they WERE mobile too...at least until the last Red Cross shipment from the States...650 sets of brand new Samsonite "Silver Streak" luggage. God, they were beautiful...the luggage not the Marines. They just weren't very practical. Men struggle at every APD to get the luggage up the cargo netting. A half dozen boats wait in line near the APD's to load another 100 Marines...and their luggage. The glow in the East means the sun will be up any minute. Cpt. C. Griswold, USN, CO of the TF, paces nervously. From a nearby boat, a young Marine is heard to exclaim..>

Young Marine: Sargeant, I forgot my make up case!

Sarge: **** the make-up case!

2nd Marine: Oh, come on Sarge. It's a set.

Sarge: All, right Goddamnit! But this is the last time. And I don't want anyone telling me they need to pee either. Go while we are ashore or hold it. Boatswain! Take us back in.

Cpt. C. Griswold, USN: <quietly> Madre de Dios! <he is not the kind of man to take the Lord's name in vain, or the Mother of Jesus either, but somebody told him once it is OK if you say it in a foreign language. Deep inside, he knew that was a REALLY lame rationalization, but this is the worst stress he has been subjected to since his wedding night when his new bride giggled when he disrobed. He closed his eyes to shut out the memory. When he opened them again, the reality was hardly any better> Signal all ships to make steam.

Lookout: Enemy planes bearing two seven zero!

Cpt. C. Griswold, USN: <He rushes to the port side of the flying bridge. As he does so his hand comes to rest on a large red button, which belongs to an invention of his own design, now undergoing its first oeprational field test aboard Boggs......the Mk 12(G) ganged, all-weather, omnidirectional flare dispenser. All acitivity stops as six flares arc skyward in a perfect symmetrical pattern. I have to admit the thing worked perfectly in its first field trial> Madre de Dios y su Nino, Jesus!*

*Edited: Forgot to capitalize "Jesus" <makes sign of the cross>

We lost 5 APD's and 500 Marines. Only about 150 men from Bn remain. Even worse, the Japs on Tanna recognized the evacuation and attacked the Army Bn remaining at 1:1 odds. Uggh. I am trying to get the remainders out by PBY.

This is a real ganged, omni-directional cluster ****.

BTW...the Bettys at New Ullapool are MURDER.

USS Boggs got away. Cpt. Griswold has developed a bd case of "nervous stomach". The Mk 12(G) has been retired.

Even worse, I had decided to cancel the APD evac because the weather was good flying weather. I started to work on the turn, put it aside and somehow forgot to cancel the op. Then I remembered it in the middle of the night after I had sent the turn. Uggh.

*******May 26, 1942**********

New Scotland: The Japs are bombarding La Foa from land and sea. Allied counterbattery fire is still murderous and the Japs are taking casualties at 6 or 7 to 1 ratios but it is still having the desired purpose of chewing up supply. I have put all the arty into reserve in hopes this will conserve supply. I got the RAAF Kittyhawk squadron out by disbanding them but the planes are lost. Only 3 P-40s are flying CAP. Today, Hornet should finally be in position to fly off the remaining RN and USN F4F's. Hornet has 45 F4F's as a CAP. I hope this will be enough if the Bettys decide to reach out. About 15 damaged planes remain at La Foa. Most will probably be lost when it falls but one or two are repaired every day and flown out.

Most of the Marine Air Wing, two engineer units (minus their dozers) and half a Marine Raider Bn. have been flown out to Fiji. About 1/4 of Marine 2nd Regt. is safe. 25,000 troops remain in the bag.
