Kindle like all e-ink readers is much better for reading books than ipad. If thats what you are after then get kindle.

I think it really depends on what you plan to do.

My wife is torn between purchasing the Kindle and Nook. She has a laptop. Right now she is leaning toward the Nook.

From the info we've learned, the E-Ink is not back lit so your eyes aren't getting constantly bombarded by light from an LCD screen. Battery usage is minimal since the screen doesn't update the image except when you turn a page. Sort of like an Etcha Sketch.

If you are looking for a dedicated reader the Kindle and Nook may be more what you want instead of an IPad. If you are looking for more functionality go with the IPad.

If you wear glasses, I am also told by an Optometrist to go with the Kindle or Nook because of the above aforementioned light emissions of an LCD- it apparently is a glare issue for bespectacled folks.

I won't acquire either but if I had to choose it would be the iPad.

Both are pure consumer devices, no real computers, but the iPad is way more versatile and has large 3rd party developer support with a plethora of available applications. However, I got this already on my iPhone, so there is no need for another pad.

Kindle is just good for one thing: reading books, and can't even depict colors. I know, many people consider it stressing to read on a backlighted device, but that doesn't apply to me. I'm used to Google News for quite some time and it's years ago when I purchased real newspapers.

That being said, digital books have to be free for me. If I spend money for something, it has to be a printed issue.

iPad because it's more than just an ebook reader.
Colored screen also good for reading PDF manuals.
But you have to pay the price.

As has been said, the Kindle (or Nook, or Sony Reader) and iPad aren't really competitors, except for limited cash. The book readers are useful for pretty much one thing only, reading particular kinds of book (principally novels) which they do supremely well. They don't cut it for academic texts, technical manuals, graphic novels etc and indeed anything that needs pictures or diagrams of any complexity, so you need to be pretty clear what you actually want.

The iPad is indeed more versatile, but as far as versatility goes I still prefer a decent netbook (although I tend to agree with those who think the tablet form will make those extinct at some point, just as bl**dy smartphones did decent PDAs. Show me the iPad that I can use both to read books my Sony can't handle AND play Field of Glory, Dominions 3, Age of Wonders, TOAW, Squad Battles, etc, etc, etc! Not to mention running full versions of MS Office and Visual Studio.

You need to tell us what you're looking to use them for.

If it's book reading, here's the issues you may want to consider:

1. Weight.
2. Color in the material being viewed.
3. Reading through finger marks on a screen.

I now own the Latest Generation Kindle DX (with the same screen size as the iPad) and a Kindle 3 with the 6" screen (took the plunge soon after getting the DX recently). Both units "talk" to each other so that if I'm reading a book on one and then pick up reading on the other, they sync to the last page read. They're both very light weight - you don't even know you're holding the Kindle 3. I have not had a single crash or freeze with either and my screen is always clean, sharp and finger mark free - no need for screen protectors.

Lastly, the Kindle 3 is very well suited to the "reading room"/"throne room" of the house, whereas I'd dare take the DX or an iPad in there

An easy to overlook but essential point. The LAST thing you want on a dedicated book reader is a touch screen.

Two more points for taking into consideration:

The iPad is sorta heavy after a while if you hold it with one hand and it's shape doesn't allow to lay it plain on the table, for such as typing.

Due to DRM issues Kindle books cannot be converted to ePub/PDF for reading on another computer. So if you ever switch your Kindle for a more shiny device, all your purchased stuff will be lost.

The idea behind Pads is nice, but I'm going to wait for next generation and a rather open OS, like Windows, Android or whatever - which allow to interchange books between different platforms.

Well, I use my ipad to read lots of books and find it quite passable. It isn't great for being outdoors on a sunny day but I live in Ireland so that problem is somewhat geographically minimised

The ipad is GREAT for reading pdf manuals etc and, of course, a great little web browser. For quite a bit of my browsing I prefer to use my ipad now than my computer, although I still prefer to use the computer when I have to type something long ( or just go with my apple wifi keyboard ).

With one charge my eslick e-ink reader lasts for two months. According to google ipad lasts abt 7 hours depending on usage. Also ipad is much heavier.

I dont think they compete with each other though. One is best for reading books and other for reading big color mags and sofort.

Agree with all points here.  Totally different devices.  It all boils down to what you want to do and how much money you can burn.
Regarding Kindle, it's not even in my list as Amazon does not sell ebooks to my country!!!

You don't lose your books. you can still access them on your computer/Itouch/Ipad/New Kindle.. you just sync up with your account..

Thanks for the ideas, I'm still in thinking mode. I wish Matrix would have an app and for the life of me, I don't see why they don't. I get my quarter bonus on Tuesday and selfhish me I want to spend it on myself!

I cannot stress enough how true this is. I played Sony's reader and it was such a freaking pain. I'll choose buttons anyday of the week.

Just to reemphasize a couple of points:

Kindles are great for reading outside in bright sunlight - absolutely no problem. Try that on any LCD screen device like an I-pad. I do find the Kindle to be much easier on the eye and than any computer screen. No glare and no eye-strain. You do need a light source to read in the dark (duh).

The small Kindle is easy to hold while reading in bed (or anywhere else). If I "nod off" for a second the Kindle doesn't flop close and lose my place.

Battery life on a Kindle is measured in days, not hours and getting a full charge takes only about 4 hours.

And, yea, Kindle reader apps are available free for Mac's and PC's so you can read your Kindle books on your computer, laptop, or iPad(but I'll bet you'll always pickup your Kindle if you have the choice)and your last page read is always synced across all devices.

Finally, you don't have to pay an internet connection fee on a Kindle, the wireless is free for buying, synchronizing, and downloading books.

As has been said repeatedly... it's all about what your want to use the device for and how much you want to pay for it. There is no perfect answer regarding which device to choose. In terms of Kindle vs Nook, I'd bank on Amazon winning the ebook wars. Barnes and Noble is on a few watch lists for possible bankruptcy. I buy most everything from Amazon these days anyway (even computer components) as I get free two day shipping as a "Prime" member. Generally they match the best prices at NewEgg or TigerDirect and the free shipping almost always makes them cheaper. Heck, I even buy my weedwacker refills from them

I recently worked at Barnes and Noble and I'll back that up about possible bankruptcy. Upper management was increasing the ante of making sales and hounding customers for memberships. And cutting the time to stock shelves in half. Ugh, I'm glad I quit that place.

Edit: I just clicked on your link. Beautiful landscape!

It's a shame they did that with the new one, I have the PRS-505 and it's a super bit of kit once you junk it's own associated PC software and use Calibre instead. It always seems to be the same with Sony, their mp3 players were excellent as well (not to mention that their own proprietory ATRAC format is so vastly superior to mp3 it just isn't funny) , but shipped with software that was so buggy it was barely useable.

I think Sony they were just trying to jump on the touch-screen bandwagon without really giving any consideration to the nature of the product.

Thank You :) I really need to upload some newer pictures though. I've gotten lazy and I have so many new pics taken out here! The variety is endless here in the "wide open spaces".

Don't forget, that to get a lot of the cool features of an iPad you have to pay a monthly subscription fee for wireless access, otherwise you can only use an iPad at a wireless hotspot.
