Since the film that shall not be mentioned was mentioned earlier. I got to thinking about if I was stuck on a Pacific island (or atoll) with only ten World War 2 Pacifc themed films to take with me, these would be my choices. THey are also in no particular order:

1. Pride of the Marines
2. King Rat
3. Air Force
3. Mister Roberts
4. Battle Cry
5. Attack Force Z
6. The Story of Dr. Wassell
7. The Gallant Hours
8. Torpedo Run
9. Salute to the Marines
10. Stand By For Action

Some of these are name brand, but most of these that I have chosen aren't seen that often anymore either on cable or on the store shelves.

Anyone else have some movies they would want to add to help purge the taint of the movie that shall not be named.

I would certainly make sure that Kelly's Heroes was one the island. I always liked Run Silent, Run Deep.

[biting but good-natured sarcasm on] Well, that explains it. So Kelly's Heroes was a Pacific Theater movie? I dadgum well knew that it didn't portray anything in Europe. [biting but good-natured sarcasm off]

Kelly's Heroes is not a WWII movie. It's a Vietnam movie. And a terrible one at that. I realize there's a solid subset of decent AE Matrix Forums folks that like this movie, but you guys just have scales over your eyes. One day those scales will fall from your eyes and you will be mortified that you had any good thought about this movie.

If I had to choose WWII Pacific-Theater movies, my list wood begin strong and quickly taper off, in this order: Mr. Roberts, Tora Tora Tora, Bridge over the River Kwai, the two modern Iwo Jima Movies, Midway (they really tried to do this one right), and that would be about it.

If anybody dares to list Thin Red Line or Windtalkers....

Bull-oney! Kelley's Heroes is one of the better WW II movies ever made, in spite of the fact it was a sarcastic comedy. First movie ever to try to make German Tanks LOOK like German tanks. OK..., so they were T-34/85's with a framework built over them. But at least they had the distinctively "boxey" shape of every German Tank except the Panther. The combat portions were done well, even down to being strafed by the "9th Luftwaffe". You got Viet Nam on the brain there, "Rebel".

The Mike Curb Congregation are hippies? Nonsense. Music for the movie came from all backgrounds. "All for the Love of Sunshine" is a Hank Williams song (a "hippy" if ever there was one..., NOT!).

Virtually every film from that era had some degree of "Hippiness" to it. Ofcourse that was before my time, so maybe it looks differently to me.

But I definatly felt, for example, that there were scenes in "Red Beach" that didn't feel at all like they belonged in a '40's era movie.
Kelly's Heroes would be an extreme version of this, but if it is meant to allude to Vietnam I can't really see how the story line does that in anyway.

Sorry, Mike, but thou hast scales over thine eyes.

My dad is an 86-year-old US Army veteran who served in Europe during World War II. He's still in great shape, physically and mentally, and if you dare - DARE - ask him what he thinks of Kelly's Heroes, you're going to get an earfull of expletives that will make your grandma cringe. And my father doesn't curse.

Oh, that must prove the point... of course, it might ignore the fact that other WW2 veterans DID like the movie, although the admittedly the ones i know that did all served in the Pacific (but then again, essentially all the WW2 vets i knew served in the Pacific.)

EDIT: One man (or even 10 people's) opinion on something doesn't make the "final word" on something, of course.

In this case, one man is the tip of a gigantic iceberg that would rip the hull out of the flimsy craft carrying the handful of bedraggled, befuddled, bemused Kelly's Heroes fans. The movie reeks.

I think it's a Vietnam movie in a WW2 setting...

They Were Expendable should be IMO on that list, too.

He might not like the movie, but I laughed my Arse off watching it and consider KElly's Heroes one of my all time fav movies. Hell I even have the vinyl for the music soundtrack which is funny because I thought I was buying the CD version of it, oh well!

/Hippie or not, you have to admire the Cast of characters in the movie is what really made it awesome.

Practically any movie made, (especially if it is a comedy) has references to the culture at the time it is made. However, the addition of one "hippy" character added for comedic effect rather overlooks the umpteen other non-hippy characters in the story.

I agree, it (Kelly's Heroes) is NOT a "Pacific-themed" WW2 movie.

I agree on They Were Expendable.

If we're going for ETO movies as well you have to have the Battle of Britain in there - great film.

I would probably put Sands of Iwo Jima in there too.

Gigantic +1. Always hated that film.

I liked Thin Red Line except for some really poor casting choices and a couple of guys that acted w/ all the intenstiy of someone needing a mortgage payment.

There's really no excuse for Nick Cage or Windtalkers. Personally, I thought it was worse than TMTMNBN. Kate Beckinsale can make up for a lot.

Well, if we are adding ETO movies, this opens a whole slew of stuff, everything from The Longest Day to A Bridge to Far to Band of Brothers (miniseries).

The ORIGINAL Thin Red Line (1964) was pretty good, iirc, but it's been a LONG time since i have seen it.

I'd add Letters from Iwo Jima and the Japanese movie about Midway (which i think appeared in the US as I Bombed Pearl Harbor should also be on the list... it has been a long time since i've seen the latter, and i can not find it for sale on DVD in English (or even subtitled). Flags of Our Fathers should also make the list.

It seems to me that the ETO movies are much better than the PTO genre (in general).

Well, my Dad (unfortunately no longer with us) served in Europe too..., and he liked the movie. Said he'd met the Don Rickles character in person (the Sgt. who could get you ANYTHING---for a price).

This weekend, my wife and daughter brought home from the library Caught in the Draft, a 1941 movie starring Bob Hope and Dorothy Lamour. We popped it in, not really expecting much. Four or five times we found ourselves holding our sides with laughter. There were some really funny scenes. One that my daughter got, but that I missed, occurs while Hope's character is in an army hospital. He happens to overhear an orderly talking to a patient being wheeled through the hosptital on a gurney. The patient (who, unbeknowst to Hope, has just learned that his wife had a baby) says, "I hope it's a boy!" Hope looks at this patient, who is laid flat on the gurney and holding his stomach, in a very funny way.
