I got a question about some of the navy hull definitions.

While some are easy to understand (at least i think i got them), i fail to find anything for some others.

Why BB for a battleship ? BigBoom ?
I guess CL stands for cruiser-light, but what means CA then? Crusier-?
If DE means Destroyer Escort, what is DD then ? Destroyer-Destroyer ?

Nothing important, just curious.

CA was originally "Cruiser, Armoured". "Destroyer" was originally "Torpedo Boat Destroyer". As for "BB" and "DD", I think they repeat the letters just to maintain the consistancy of a two-letter designation. Less confusing than just "B" or "D".

BB was picked because the alternative BS [ Battle Ship] had negative connotations to some.

I was told once (probably untrue) that they doubled the common ship letters to avoid garbling in Morse code keying. If one "D" got messed up, the other one probably got through.

Well, true or not, it would certainly make sense.
