Hi everyone,
I would like to ask for a suggestion from more experienced players regarding my PBEM as Japan.

We are now in 1/43 and, due to a couple of battles in 1942 where I lost the entire KB and the Allies lost all the US and British CVs, I have a supremacy (2CVs and a few CVLs) that I would like to put to my advantage.
What triggerd those CV battles were the US invasions of Port Moresby in 8/42 and Wake in 10/42, when I lost both bases.

Right now the Allies cannot use PM because they have no aircover there and the base is being bombed daily by the IJAF. Furthermore I think the troops there do not have much supply because all the tries made to resupply the base have been crushed by Nells form Rabaul. I briefly thought about trying to recapture it, but I believe it is not worth it because I will be again under the pressure of 4Es from Oz that will make the base untenable for me. The only advantage that I can see is the possible destruction of a US Division.

The other possible target is the recapture of Wake. Right now I have a Division in Manchuria that is fully prepped and I can buy it in about a week. Due to the troops limit at Wake the Allied force there is not big and I think that the base can be captured rather easily with the cover of my CVs.

My question is if Wake in Allied hands can become a thorn in my side and need to be recaptured, or do you consider it a base with no strategic value.

To close my argument I believe that, at this point in the war, there is no reasonable chance to mount an operation anywhere in South Pacific.
Thanks all.

As an Allied player I would say that trading off my carriers for yours is most likely a good thing. You will get a few more carriers and your Allied opponent is going to get a heck of a lot more. However, for now you are fairly safe from most Allied offensive moves until perhaps mid to late 1943. If I were you, I would focus on getting my defenses in order. You have a nice window of time to do so. I think taking back PM is a good move for you. You really need it to have a solid perimeter and if you leave it in his hands, soon enough he will be strong enough in air power to hold it and expand it into a level 9 airbase. Wake is not so important in my opinion but you can retake it fairly easily if he has not carriers. It is nice to have as many roadbumps as possible.

Wake is an excellent forward sub base.  Beyond that there is limited value in retaking her.

hkbhsi,

Like Japanese Player, Wake Is. have not a strategic value, for sure. Could be valuable for air naval search or support advanceguard sub ops in CentPac, but no more, IMHO.

Best wishes.

I think the opposite is true. Wake is important to Japan because it can be very important to the Allies. It represents a step forward - a penetration of the Japanese outer defenses. And steps forward in CenPac are usually very long steps covering alot of territory. So, once Wake falls the next target might be Marcus, which is uncomfortably close to Japan.

On the other hand, Port Moresby isn't that important in late '42. Japan has a tough, interlocking defense in the New Guinea/New Britain/Solomons region. Allied advances tend to be small steps that are usually risky and potentially costly. More importantly, it's a LONG way to anything vital. Rabaul isn't vital - at least by late '43. Truk isn't vital by '44.

As a Japanese player with relatively few carriers, I would much rather my opponent slog his way forward in New Guinea than to leap-frog across the ocean in CenPac.

Thanks a lot for your opinion.

I tend to agree with Canoerebel, as my opponent has demonstrated that he will probably try to advance from the Solomons or Central Pacific, because I have seen no sign elsewhere.

In the Solomons and New Guinea I feel more confortable because I have a lot of bases built up and I do not think that he will be able to use Port Moresby anytime soon, since due to lack of long range fighters he cannot prevent the base from being bombed every day by the IJAF.

My most pressing worry though, is that with the arrival of the Essex CVs he will use Wake to take Marcus Is and shut me out from the entire Central Pacific.

What I do not know is if, even with the small port size, with the use of a lot af AO and AE disbanded in port, Wake can be used as a staging base for an invasion of the Marianas, because that would be really troublesome and would require immediate action.

Cheers

I would think you really want to take Wake back from him if possible. His PBY's can see quite a large area from there.

hkbhsi,

The port size is not as limiting as you might think. An Allied player can always bring to Wake units which have naval support squads in their TOE.

Thank you Alfred; that was my fear. It looks like I will need to launch a counter invasion as long as I have Carrier superiority.
