ORIGINAL: sanch I just got into HOI3 - not terribly realistic, but it is sort of challenging and fun, at least for newbies. Been playing as Hungary... First time, got crushed by the Russians. Second time, learned how to fight land battles. I took Yugoslavia early, got Odessa and Crimea on the east front, but about the exact moment I ran out of manpower, the Americans opened the 2nd front in Dalmatia - crushed by Americans. Third time, took (and fortified) Yugoslavia, and took Odessa, Crimea, Rostov, and the entire Caucasus when Bitter Peace happened (had to give it all to Germany). After that, I figured I had the hang of armies, so now starting as Italy. I suspect that eventually I'll get bored, and get back to DW or WitP:AE. But meanwhile, having fun. If you are going to play Italy then I have a suggestion for you. Do not try to wage war on the African continent by crossing the Mediterranean....You are pretty much screwed if you do....the British navy will cut you apart on the sea and your troops will starve for resources. My solution was to go through Yugoslavia, Greece, Bulgaria, Turkey, Iraq and then to cross the Suez into Africa. Before enacting this strategy try to remove as many of your forces from Africa and then begin your attack on Yugoslavia. Something to watch out for if your playing Simper Fi....by the time you conquer most of Africa the United States will try and land in Normandy...this will be a significant battle...you will have to help the Germans out or they will be dead.
