Well, I notice that the Ultimate Edition is DX, which means no printed manual at all! But let's recall that the HCE once offered you a black and white manual and some copys of the H3ANW even provided you a full-colour manual (at least there was a full colour maunal in my physical edition of H3ANW)!

I just wonder why the so-called 'ultimate' edition will not contain any printed manual. Indeed, as Matrix claims, a collector's edition will contain a full colour printed manual. As far as I am understanding, the Harpoon Ultimate Edition should be considered as a collector's edition and thus should meet the manual standard.

Unfortunately, no printed manual in this release. I really wanted to do one but it proved to be impossible.

We did do a lot of work on the manuals themselves though, including major overhauls of the HCE and H3ANW manuals that took months of work. There are three manuals in total in the new releases (plus various older manuals in the legacy version), but just the new and improved HCE and H3ANW manuals add up to hundreds of pages, more than we could reasonably print and more than would fit in the box.

Regards,

- Erik

So I guess the old 'Guide to Modern Naval Strategy' which appeared in H2 and H3.6 will also be included digitally?

I think it's time for Matrix to introduce bigger boxes for collectors editions, and maybe even in general. In Main stream games, they offer much bigger boxes to add stuff. And since Wargames require such huge manuals, this would be very welcomed.. I too am pretty disappointed in there being no printed manual.

I'm very glad of the manual with WITP:AE but in general I can see Matrix' point - this comes with a 152 page "basic" (!) manual, a 130 page advanced manual, and a 153 page manual for the Commanders Edition.

I'm sure that if I really needed a printed versionI could take what I want to a local (or an online) print shop for less than the extra cost if Matrix had to send it around the globe.

I think that at least Matrix are open about it - I've got plenty of games that pretend to have a manual, but it's a very cut down version to get you going and then you're back to the pdfs.

I think printed manuals are a waste of paper and ink, not to mention the cost it adds which we ultimately pay for. I still laugh at the whole experience over the AE manual, getting hung up in customs and delaying everything. And then my 300 page color manual finally arrives and the print size is too small for my old eyes to read comfortably. I ended up printing it from the pdf anyway, and the original is a paper weight. Digital forever!

1) That's your opinion.
2) That's why Matrix offers a less expensive download only option. You don't have to pay extra for anything. Enjoy your "Digital Forver!" download version and leave us with our 'waste of paper and ink'

Well, as a matter of fact, a collector's edition shall equip the collector with something extra -- at least we get what we really paid for. As I have mentioned earlier, if both the H3ANW and the HCE physical box edition provide us with their manuals, why the boastful Ultimate edition fails to achieve our collector's necessity? I don't think it is a waste of paper of money, since this is 'ultimate' edition and it is supposed to contain everything -- it has to be luxury, or deluxe in my opinion.

Of course, I will still order a physical edition as soon as it is available (on Nov 15th?). I do can print the maunal myself (black and white) or take the pdf to a print shop, but I think to print the whole manual in full colour will cost me quite a lot!

The issue with printed manuals is they cost a fortune unless you're printing in large quantities. The real price to you guys would be prohibitive if we charged what it really cost. To print on demand is about $20 a time for a manual this size & there are 2 of them, so add $40 to the purchase price. I can't see anyone going for that. The issue with printing in bulk is that the numbers we'd have to order are more than we'd ever be able to sell and you get hit with storage costs per month. It was something we wanted to do but the logistics just didn't stack up. The layout costs alone for these manuals was significant.

We did want to include a printed manual, it simply didn't prove to be possible. I would say though that this does equip the collector with something extra in the form of all the classic versions of Harpoon, which took a fair amount of extra work to organize and test for inclusion in the release. Basically, we're offering you both of the latest enhanced releases of Harpoon (ANW and CE) for less than the price of one if you have the discount coupon, along with a 20 year history of Harpoon in the form of the classic versions. While we would have liked to also have a printed manual, I still think this is a collector's package.

Regards,

- Erik

I printed out the AE manual also as the type was (for me) too tiny. I have a friend who owns a printing store, so anytime I want something printed I just trade him an hour of my time (technology consulting) and all is good.

With the huge increase in actual costs for just printing manuals, at some point companies will not be able to include them and still keep prices "reasonable" for everyone else. OT- But I can't see WITE or MWIF including manuals I will be able to read, so it's back to the printer. My friend makes out well, but I get him at Christmas when he does approximately 600 Holidays cards for me (spread out in about 5-6 different types) for an hour of my time.

PLEASE create a fine manuel for each game but always give us the option to print it on our own (or not). I have no desire to pay an extra $25-40 to have a manual included (unless the type was big enough for me to read (an 18 font works)).

Flipper, I agree, and it would be nice as an option in a 3 ring binder like the Falcon 4 manual. I know (sigh) just wishful thinking.

I haven't even played DW due to small fonts in the tutorial. I got tired of squinting close to my LCD 24" monitor, and getting sunburned.

I guess this makes WitP:AE's collector's edition all the more valuable if we won't being seeing any more full color printed manuals.
