******38th Brigade HQ, Winnipeg, June 12, 1942********* Lt. Col. Elster, CO: <looks up from work> Ah, Cpt., good. I want you to take some men and get up to Albert Beach. Mrs. Witherspoon reported a possible Jap landing. Cpt. Powell: Again, sir? Lt. Col. Elster, CO: Yes, again. Any questions? Cpt. Powell: I'm sorry sir, it's just that it's a lake. The boys are wondering how the Japs would get to Lake Winnepeg. Lt. Col. Elster, CO: Goddamnit Capt., how the Hell should I know. What about that river that goes North, what's it called? Cpt. Powell: Ah, the Nelson sir, but it's not navigable and it drains into the key anyway. Lt. Col. Elster, CO: The key? Cpt. Powell: Yes sir, the big grey thing where Hudson Bay used to be. Lt. Col. Elster, CO: Look, Powell, she said she saw footprints. Cpt. Powell: Footprints, sir? Lt. Col. Elster, CO: Yes footprints, in the sand. Cpt. Powell: But that could be anybody sir. Lt. Col. Elster, CO: Goddamnit to Hell, Powell, she said they were really small, are you happy now? ..Don't answer that. Look, she is the mayor's sister-in-law. Just go up there and nose around a bit and reassure her. Now get the Hell out of here. <has second thoughts> I'm sorry, Powell, we all want to get into the fight but there aren't enough political points, OK? Your boys will just have to be patient...........
