A British destroyer just arrived at Capetown in my PBEM. HMS Inconstant?!

What's next? HMS Inconsistant? HMS Inconsequent? Silly Brits...

HMS Decoy is another good name

Until recently we had HMS Beaver.

Simon,

Since HMS Beaver is no longer in the RN, would it be correct to say that the RN has no further interest in the namesake? Is the RN now truly a Beaver-free branch of Her Majesty's Armed Forces?

I mean, sailors of the RN did fine without the Beaver for many years, right? They can make do without her in the future, can't they? Can't her service be performed by other classes?

You sure you want to pursue that line of thought further...?

I bet the RN is not Beaver free.

Just a guess on my part.

No... no I don't mean you Guys, no you people in here are all-cool.

I mean the games-broken crowd, you the know the ones, if the game squeaks or flickers they run it down for months. Now I know the game is not perfect, and that it has it's bugs. But if you want to play an operational air/ground/sea wargame, it's the best out there.

I really can't see why some of these Guys still play the game anyway, if it is as bad as they make it out to be. But then I suppose they then wouldn't be able to put-out this never ending prattle on the games faults then would they.

Well thats my rave for the year.

Des, the funny thing is the "gripers" often have found legitimate bugs, or design problems, but the way they present it and go on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on...... about it surely makes the developers less interested in giving the issue raised the attention it might otherwise deserve.    I'm a software tester IRL.  My job is to tell developers that their baby is ugly.  They take it much better if I am civil about it.

Am I really supposed to be impressed when someone can type this?

"That's why I mentioned WinBUGS/BUGS. That's a package for Bayesian analysis using Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) methods. Those allow you to do sampling from probability distributions based on constructing a Markov chain that has the desired distribution as its equilibrium distribution. That's basically what you want here."

Is anyone impressed by a person who can type that?

Dunno if the author was griping here... he seemed to say he can't get a good grasp on how land combat works, so wanted something he could plug numbers into to get some idea of what might happen.

Of course, the whole business is really variable, so i don't think you can write something that would give better information than you can get by just watching the game and getting a feel for things... but, i suppose if you CAN'T get a feel for things, then maybe number crunching will work better than relative non-comprehension.

Good point, Bob.  We're all engineers here, in some fashion.  Some of us, more so than others.  Getting a feel for things is not natural.

Think I'm more of a large flightless bird more than an engineer, would of helped being an engineer though, as I could have made myself aerodynamic and able to fly.

I had a train set as a kid. I was an engineer then...not so much now. (I loved causing the locomotive to jump the track, much to my dad's dislike.)

A train set as a kid?  I have lots of trains now, and I'm 43.

I just don't have any place to set them up currently.

Good point. In part, it's the difference in knowing how to motivate people. And how to interact with a diverse group, and how to simply be civil as you pointed out.

I think I was an engineer... when I was in high school the N-SSA team I belongs to was the 1st Regiment  of Engineers, PACS (Provisional Army of the Confederate States). In general we were better at digging holes than target shooting (actually, being a team made up mostly of historians from the national park service and colonial Williamsbirg we kept winning the most authentic uniform awards).
