Its now mid 1943 and my (recharched) A6M5c's are coming online at a rate of 200 pr month.
I have 14 Carriers to equip with this new Fighter, and most of the Carriers have over 40 Zeros pr Carrier. I have a few carriers + all 7 Light Carriers with fighters only on. (3 Converted CS soon ready.)

My Question is.. Did I make the right decision?

Would you pick the A6M5c over the A6M5d-S ?? It's too late for me to change anything now as its already recharched and in production now, but did I pick the right aircraft to become my main and only type of Carrier based fighter?

I don't think you could takte the A6M5d-S; isn't it a night fighter that your groups won't upgrade to?

They will upgrade.
We use a House Rule that any IJN Fighter may upgrade to any IJN fighter, so I may upgrade them to any IJN fighter type.
However I will not upgrade them to George as it was not a Carrier Fighter. The d-S had service for some time on CV so I could upgraded them to the A6M5d-S but I wonder now If I made the right call in picking the A6M5c to become my main CV fighter.

My Fleet will go into a support role now for land bases, and the landbases have hundreds of Georges (and in a few months also Frank's) on them, so the Carriers main role will be to support-defence of Islands and bases that my opponent eventually will try to take from me.

All the "strong points" has at least 2 level 6 bases next to echater, so I have arround 600 landbased George + Jill and Judy to count on + my 14 Carriers adding another 1100 aircrafts into the mix.

BUT I am not 100% sure I made the right call on CV Fighter type.

How can you implement that house rule? Did you modify it in the editor?

Yes of course, we want the game to end in 45 and not in 43 ^^

Our Intention with it was to allow the George in at least historical numbers (into the field at any time.
So any Zero may become a George. (but also a rule who say that Jack and George may not be on CV's).

Anyway.. question was: Would you go A6M5c over A6M5d-S ?

Well in that case, why not go with the F-14 Tomcat, while your at it.

Because it is not in the game, and as you know was many years into the future.
We stick to the aircrafts availeble in that erea, we want it semi-realistic.

I went with the A6M5c due to its Armor..  so accapting lower speed for Armor..   or would you rather have 20 more knots?

Although none of my games have gotten to that point yet, I would have made the same choice you did, given the circumstances. I believe, as many others do, that pilots are more important than airframes. And as far as I have seen, although I may be mistaken, armor is more important for pilot survival than 20 knots of speed.

I would choose the A6m5C - Now on paper the A6m5d just smokes the C -
5C comes out 44/10 vs 5d which is 44/6
Speed wise the 5d is faster
Normal range the 5d is 2 hex farther (7 vs 5)
Manueuver rate the 5d out turns the 5C easily

Big difference is Armor - Which the 5C has, which would your pilots rather - survive or become a flaming ball of fire?

I would rather have a damaged aircraft then dead pilot.

No Because it way to unhistorical. Your F14 surggestions are very unserius and diviate from the topic in my post.

K, well I have the A6M5c now in August 1943 due to recharch, I also hope I made the right call on aircraft.
Of course in the end it does not matter due to the superpowers of the Allies, but at least I hopefully can reduce my Carrier losses when we eventually starts to battle for my island's and bases.

Allies has yet not made any offencives, and I suspect he will start with liberating (or trying to cut off) New Zeland and Pago-Pago area, but we will see.

Yeah, far likely the Allies are able to research the F-14 in time, however the F-14 was able to shoot down a pair of Zeros right before Pearl Harbor, so its quite possible if the Allies researched right it could have an entire Nimitz class carrier that shows up right after a large storm.
