Hi all
another error related to improper installation of 1.08.03 to report. Our long standing game was running smoothly with 1.08.03, until one of our players (Spain) re-installed his game to transfer the game to a new computer. Unfortunately, he installed from 1.00 straight to 1.08.03 with no intermediate steps. The result was errors in the naval combat phase when GB attacked the Spanish fleet and lost. The naval battle ran as expected, however, 2 errors occured at the end: first, the defeated fleet (GB) did not retreat in the improper (Spanish) version (it did retreat as it should on the other players (GB's) game), and 2) there was no battle damage to the fleet owned by the improperly installed (Spanish) game.
We then had an almost identical error in the land combat phase. In this case, one of the combatants (France) had just re-installed from 1.00 to 1.06.03 to 1.07.01 to 1.07.02 to 1.08.04. It is not clear if this error is a carry over from the naval phase. For this battle, Prussia attacked France and lost. The battle ran normally, however, as with the naval combat, the defeated army (Prussia) did not retreat on the recently installed game (France's computer), and there was no battle damage to the French. All appears normal in the Prussian players games.
In both these cases, the victorious players was the non-phasing player, but they did not see the retreat of the defeated player, nor did they sustain damage. It appears that the non-phasing player loaded the final combat file, but none of the battle results were applied to the non-phasing player, only the phasing player.

For sure, the first naval combat error is related to an improper install. I can't tell if second land combat error is related, but I suspect it is. The alternative is that there is yet another intermediate patch required for the installation to work.

We also had problems with some depots (two depots in the same area), which may or may not be related. It appears that sometimes, you can place a depot, but no one else can see it. This is almost identical to a depot problem we had upgrading from 1.05 to 1.06 when not all players were upgrading together. I suspect we are seeing the same thing here, which is causing the depot issue. in the 1.05 to 1.06 upgrade, if one player did not upgrade properly, the error propagating foward into other players games, who had upgraded properly.

The morale of the story, make sure you and everyone else in your game re-installs/installs properly. The final answer is a release of the game that is a complete stand alone, and does not require any patching.

Hi,

What's the latest patching sequence suggestion?

1.06.03 - 1.07.02 - 1.08.04?

Yes, that is it. See the post on the main forum about where to get 1.07.02 if you don't already have it.

Just as follow up, we worked from a back up after the one player re-installed using the correcting patching procedure, and all appears to be working fine now.

this is ridiculous! why should patch order matter? there are programs out there that will compare two installations (both files and registry entries) and tell you if there are any differences. Perhaps someone should actually perform such a check and let us know which files, if any, are missing or different. Then, hopefully, Marshall can make a new all-inclusive patch and be done with it...

Please do. If this indeed is the reason for all of our issues, then it needs to be corrected, else people will give up on this game.

How realistic is the January date? 100% certain, 60%?

For my game we are taking a vote to abandon it (its 2 years old) as we still have simul errors after everyone has re-installed and re-patched (though I can't verify this).

Is that patch Checker in this new patch? I thought I was!

Someway the GM can find out who has the latest patches or not

I think there is a patch checker in there, but it only checks the most recent patch. So since it is possible to go from version 1.00 to 1.08.04, this does not check if steps 1.06.03 and 1.07.02 were done.

Perhaps we need a mesage right at the begining of the 1.08.04 (05?) install process that reminds players they must also install 1.06.03 and 1.07.02 prior to patching 1.08.04?
