I appreciate that this will vary considerably....

How long does a single turn take on average?

How do you mean? From when the player begins plotting his orders, or from when he starts the execution of the turn?

Terminus,

If playing againt the AI - how long will it take to play a single turn from sitting down at the computer and plotting orders through to the execution of them.

Obviously every turn will vary depending on what is going on etc... but just an estimate of an 'average' turn is what I am after.

Really depends on the individual.

If you are the type of player who engages in global micromanagement, then a turn could easily last between 2 and 4 hours. If on the other hand you focus only on certain areas, happy to rely on the available automated processes, and OK with regularly overlooking things, then 15-30 minutes would suffice. Of course at critical times, these times would blow out.

Against the AI you can expect the first turns you do in a grand campaign to be 1 to 10 hours. Depends on the amount of micromanagement you do. You can do them quicker but with some experience you will restart and to the first turns better. Later against the AI a lost of turn can be just 5 - 10 minutes. If you do some turn blocked it can be quite quick as you now where your TFs are, what they are doing where the LCUs go to and so on. If you are going to do some big things in a turn like invasion, training, lot of shipment and new convoys a turn later in the game can take a lot of hours too. If you form 500 Ships in different TFs with Carrier Support, replenishment, escorts, asw, put alle the units in correct order, form different TFs for different jobs it can take quite a lot of time.

Depends on the level of micromanagement you want to play.

If you are playing without managing your pilots, on average 1/2 hour.

If you are training your pilots, four to five hours.....

Lot of variability. Some of my PBEM turns take maybe ten minutes to plot the orders (but I am playing Allies in February 1942 so I am mostly watching the Japanese run amok at this point). I also play the Downfall scenario against the AI and those turns take 30-60 minutes to plot. As it has been pointed out, early turns take longer because you are in the process of positioning units and starting the movement of supplies and fuel forward. Once that initial surge is accomplished, a lot of turns are just tweaking your set up. Of course if you have a major operation about to go off (against AI or human) it will take a lot longer.

Exectution is dependent on how much you want to see. If you turn off all the animations and combat reports, it can take ten minutes. If you have everything turned on and delays set high, it can take an hour or more. Some players let the turn run with everything turned off and then rerun the combat replay with everything on if something of note occured during the turn

Depends a lot. I've done normal turns that took 3 hours, but that's when I've got too much time and check everything, pilots, planes, devices, preparation for units, send out lots of new convoys ..... The next turn can then take 15 minutes when I want to return the turn quickly to my PBEM partner. An average turn for me is an hour.

About an hour. But if I'm doing a 2 turn PBEM , it takes longer because of the double combat replay.

is this for a campaign game turn? That is what I spend on a turn for the small scenarios and why hesitate to take on the whole pacific theater. Here is hoping you tell me there is some economy of scale or maybe just some economy of experience.

If things are working well, then you are just maintaining a working machine. If things are going to hell then you are rebuilding one, and the time estimate shoots up to hours and hours. Fortunately that doesn't happen all that often.

I find against the AI it varies like the others. An hour or so if I am setting up an operation, 15 minutes or so once i set it in motion. The early turns take longer as you try to get stuff out of the way and set up the bases.

Everything, from 15mins on a quiet and lazy day for finetuning or the occasional settings check, to potentially relationship-threatening 4 hours when unexpectedly invasion planning and pilot training fall together
with some other minor issues to cover (not that I have the patienced to do this more than a couple of times per war though... )

And naturally you have to deduce the first couple of turn from this because they are the most work-intensive.
