I revisited Warband, mostly the Brytenwalda mod (man that is a work of art!) quite a bit here lately. But ultimately Mount&Blade just becomes repetitive (like most of them) once you get to a high-enough level.

A shooter off GoG does sound intriguging . . .

Dang Steam! They sell Arma2 also eh?

I just might have to break down and breach my boycott eventually . . . still the longer I hold out, the better chance they'll fold right!

Gamersgate has a special on Batman: Arkham Asylum. It's an excellent game.

Well, Steam offers Arma2:OA 50% off today. That game is a recommendation worth as well.

I'd definately recommend Arma2. I had a bug with it, but seems like it was limited to just me, but from what I'm able to play, I love it. Superb game with great scope.

I got it from Gamersgate. Maybe not 50% off, but something might come up.

Btw, the front page on Steam doesn't show it, but Arma II: Combined Operations is -50%, too.

??? Steam offers Arma 2, but it isn't a Steamworks game. Big difference. Hell, Steam sells Birth of America (via Strategy First), but it obviously doesn't use Steamworks and isn't limited to their system. Just because something is available on Steam doesn't mean it's unavailable any other way EXCEPT games that use Steamworks.

Check out GoG and see what they've got that might catch your eye. Also, somebody else suggested Batman : Arkham Asylum from Gamersgate and I'll second that. Fantastic action game, and a lot of fun.

Hmmm, think I'll try out the Arma2 Complete demo on GoG, and if it looks cool just buy the whole Ultimate Edition thing (Arma, Arma2).

That's a good choice, Anthropoid. It's not without it's bugs but the AI is pretty impressive and the combat is realistic and challenging, but also greatly satisfying and fun.

The great thing about it is, you can be running through some woods and the enemy is coming after you, then you realize there's no script here. Anything can happen. It's not like CoD where you know there's going to be 4 enemy soldiers running at you at a particular time.

Let us know how you get on with the demo.

My current favorite game is in my sig.

Best tactical game I've played, and the mods that are coming out for it are so good, they are like expansion packs!

The AI is more than just an opponent. The "Regimental AI" is a core part of the game and simulates historically accurate tactics. An important part of the game, even when playing multiplayer. I have recently played the battle of Wagram by TCP/IP and am also playing the battle of Austerlitz via pbem. There are also powerful map and OoB editors included as well.

On the Matrix side, it looks like WitE is due out soon. Some gamers get excited when a Blizzard game is released... for me it's a Gary Grigsby title.

If you like Star Trek and strategy games, then you owe it to yourself to try Birth of the Federation.

It's old (published in 1999) and somewhat buggy -- there's a memory leak that causes a turn slowdown which Microprose never fixed before going out of business -- but it's very atmospheric and has a decent number of excellent mods that have both revitalized the game and extended its longevity. I've had BOTF for eleven years now, and it still remains my most oft-played PC game.

Anguille will not be surprised that I second his recommendation of Armada 2526. It's a very solid 4x title; I've been playing it quite a bit the last couple months or so now. It's quite possibly become my second-favorite space strategy game after BOTF.

Love Star Trek. BOF it is. Arma2 demo was gonna take about 15 hours do DL! Think I'll just jump in and buy it, looks too good to miss.

At $10 Panzer II on GoG was a 'why not!'

Thanks for all the suggestions guys, that should more than hold me for a while, though no need to stop there; keep 'em comin'!

I'm actually contemplating resintalling Sid Meier's "Pirates!" For all its simplicity and repetitiveness, I remember that as being one of my funnest games. If the Nitro guys could get a bit more flavor, variety and cartoony into their games, they could easily surpass Pirates!

I guess you mean GG.

However, considering you enjoy the demo, I'd suggest to acquire Combined Operations. Aside of the delivered camapign there is plenty of user-made content available, which in most cases demands Arma2 plus the Arrowhead expansion. You can as well purchase both titles seperatly but that would be more expensive.

Every game is boring eventually, but I have only played 1 computer game since 2000 without let up regardless of how much aggro modern computers might present to playing it.

Steel Panthers World at War, admittedly a free download, but it's the Mega Campaigns that get me caring (currently a nice sale price too).

More scenarios than even the hard core could hope to count. More good support than any other game I know of.

But it isn't everyone's idea of great I suppose. It's not real time it's not 3d. It's not much in the way of modern software. Mouse scrolling is a bit of a hassle. But I just fired up a new run through of Sreaming Eagles yesterday, and sure enjoyed playing the game loud and noisy :)

I think I may dig that one out of my collection also. Hugely fun game. I remember getting so frustrated when my character got old so fast.

So I see there is a pay for version called "General's Edition?"

Geeze, the sheer accessorization of many of these games is absolutely bewildering!

The Mega Campaigns are arguably the best Campaigns of any game ever to hit the PC, and well worth the price.

Finally bought Fallout3 GoTY; Morrowind GoTY and Rogue Warrior from Bethesda. Sent them a note to tell them, as long as New Vegas is Steam that'll be it for me.

Late to the game , but if you like Diablo style game, Titanquest is a solid game with a good expansion.  Came out about 2005-2006 and I hear there are some really good deals on it, if you are on a budget.  I heard it might actually be going for $6 total for game and expansion and believe me when I say this, it's about 4 times the length of Diablo.

No DRM.  The bosses are kind of cool.  There is a dedicated fan base and some of them have even done mods in the sense of almost creating a whole new game.

http://www.titanquest.net/

It's set in a Ancient Greek setting.  I have played it a lot over the last 2 years.

Are there mods and such for JA2? I bought it and it runs, but I got distracted going back to Hired Guns. The graphics are a lot more modern, even if game play is just a tad bit glitchy. Such a shame that GFI seems to have just evaporated and left that one a dead end. It is a wonderful game, even in its non-polished interim state, but if there was more modding potential it could be an absolutely amazing game.

The suggestion to buy Jagged Edge 2 reminded me of Hired Guns, and I went back and have been playing that one lately. Posted about it here

http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=2636267&mpage=1&key=

So is the Arma series similar to the Jagged Edge series? I absolutely love Hired Guns, which I would call "tactical combat/strategy/roleplaying" in genre.

Apart from the previous Jagged Edge games, are there other good ones that are more-or-less in that genre cluster?

ArmA is NOT the same as Jagged Edge. ArmA is an FPS - a good one, but FPS all the same (and the graphics code is MOST DEFINITELY not optimised)...but it is a good one.

ArmA is not exactly a FPS but a squad based tactical. Rather in line with games like 'Hidden & Dangerous', even though there are no stats to consider.

Regarding JA2/Unfinished Business/Wildfire I would think on Shadow Company, Silent Storm, Brigade 7.62 and of course: Commandos. However, there is no game in this ball park which comes close to Jagged Alliance. Everything else felt just lacking.
