Have anyone tried running AE from a SSD (Solid State Drive)?
http://www.ocztechnology.com/

Goes into the PCI-Express slot and is bootable.

Planning to install OS on it and give it a try.
Speeds of over 500mbs should see AE run like a speedboat instead of like a heavy cruiser

I run AE from a SSD, a Flash drive and a netbook - all which run just fine, just a tab slow on the combat animations.

Does AE stress drive access at all during operation? Using an SSD for other games you could expect to see a decrease in level load times, but the actual gameplay wouldn't be effected much if at all by using an SSD.

Running AE on an SSD should see the initial load go a lot faster, from clicking on the icon to the screen with the scenario selections and stuff. But the actual turn resolution? I don't know enough about how witp runs to guess.

There are noticeable pauses during the turn resolution that I wouldn't mind seeing reduced, but they aren't so bad that I'd go out of my way to get rid of them. And that's if the SSD would have an effect anyways heh.

My current computer I run with 2 normal drives in RAID 0, so I already see access times somewhere between SSD and normal times anyways. My next computer I was planning on getting an SSD for the operating system, but I was still going to just use 2 normal drives in RAID 0 to place all of my files and games on though. SSD's just don't seem to have the drive space yet that I'd want to place much on them. Looking through newegg you can find all sorts of SSD's but they cost roughly 10x more then normal drives for similar sizes.

Thinking about it though, a small 60 GB SSD is only 100-200 dollars, but that should easily fit witp and more. The box for witp says 1GB installation, but I'm not really sure how much room it takes with saves and patches and whatnot, but it shouldn't be all that much more.

I guess I'd still be paranoid about using and SSD for general purpose because of how small they are, but if there was an improvement to running AE on one I guess it'd be pretty easy and relatively cheap to put a small SSD in for that specific purpose.

So... to echo the OP heh, anyone tried running AE on an SSD? Would be interesting to know what sort of difference you'd see vs a normal drive.

Yes, works very well on my SSD at home. Main improvement is in loading time, the actual game execution comes down to CPU more than drive access. I heartily recommend using a SSD boot drive though, it speeds up the OS quite significantly. I have a 40GB Intel "Value" SSD, which is nowhere near the high end of SSD performance, but it still blows away a normal hard drive. I keep it for the OS and a few games to make sure I keep free space at 25% or so.

Regards,

- Erik

Modern SSDs and modern OS (like Windows 7) have so called "Trim" command to keep SSD in top shape even after usage!

If "Trim" is not enabled in OS then it is all depending on SSD controller (some are better - some are worse). Anyway it is good habit to leave unpartitioned (i.e. not free on partition - it should be unpartitioned free) space for controller to automatically do "housekeeping"...

I built my new monster computer just today. SSD included. Along with an Intel i7 950 AE runs and loads incredibly fast. I left a GC game running between the AI and it was in April 1942 just 4-5 hours later, even though at the same time it was minimized and I was carrying out all kinds of other business with my new toy.

I rebuilt my machine last year.  (I'll never buy one outright again)

I'm using an AMD quad core.

After tweaking the cpu switches on the command line for WITP-AE, the load time for the game dropped immensely.  UV loads far slower than AE for me.
