Planes & Subs
Air attacks nearly across the map as the norm. Luzon is getting lighter treatment, though. Bataan has been building fortifications and Clark might resume doing so soon.

Budding ASW groups spar with I-boats in the sea lanes near San Francisco, while Dutch boats are battered making daring port attacks.

xAK Hokko Maru found out the hard way that it's a bad idea to use the same strait both coming and going. Dutch SS KXIII sunk her within sight of Komodo Island. Perhaps the survivors can swim ashore?

China
The forces defending north of Kukong have been pushed back, and met up with reinforcements at the same time. One corps is hors de combat and will withdraw. Another corps is rushing to the front. The terrain here is rough - less favorable than the woods+rough just vacated. Wenchow again holds fast by repelling today's attack at 1 to 10 odds, although fortifications were reduced. The usual sprinkling of air raids clouded the skies over China.

Philippines
Lingayan is recaptured by the Japanese, but Malaybalay and Clark hold fast against an attack and a bombardment. Multiple air attacks harry the defenders.

Java
Heavy air attacks kept all major airfields closed, but Batavia held off an enemy assault. As much supply as possible has been moved to the mountain redoubt of Bandoeng.

The Roundup
The IJA has pulled back its forward unit in Burma to deal with the Allied rear guard (which is getting high marks for looking fierce). Other units are almost to the defensive positions in central Burma, but Sun-Tzu say that is bad ground.

Darwin and Singapore both raided by air. Singapore, bombarded by artillery also, will see a further draw down in forces as more eligible units are airlifted to Palembang. A new problem is that with daily artillery fire the enemy is more apt to notice the change in Singapore. Palembang is well beyond 500 AS and the hope is to bring in another ~3 regiments worth of troops.

Several Dutch subs are repositioning. Meanwhile at least one I-boat is running aerial search near San Francisco and spotted a convoy at the base itself. Where are those escorts Adm. King promised?

DEI Update
Batavia held against a determined attack. Defense lines were shattered, however, so no fortifications remain. Makassar and the island of Talaud-eilanden have both been invaded and must fall tomorrow.

Elsewhere
686 to 1: The Imperial Guards Division forgot that the Burma rear guard looked fierce. One battalion destroyed, one merely smeared and fleeing.

The Roundup
Several air raids on the port of Singapore destroyed the remaining 3 motor torpedo boats in the region today. Palembang has reached 600 Assault Strength is continuing to fly in combatants. The situation in the woods north of Kukong is precarious with many enemy present and friendly reinforcements on the way to defend Hengyang. Chinese forces from Ichang, 4,000 AS strong, are fording the river to the east in an attempt to smash the enemy units there. Fierceness or folly? Aerial searches launched from an I-boat continue off the US west coast. Makassar and the island of Talaud-eilanden have both fallen. Small IJN carriers have moved from the IO back to the Java Sea. Hunters are there, too. Big IJN carriers remain at Soerabaja licking wounds.

Palembang continues growing. Djokjakarta falls but Batavia withstands yet another attack. The defenders don't really have the strength, perhaps the attackers are not resting enough between attacks. Air attacks continue, but the small enemy carriers have move out of the Java Sea to the edge of the South China Sea - just barely in range - to avoid the Dutch Sharks.

Movements
While the I-boats play cat and mouse with escorts and loading convoys off the US west coast, air, land, and sea forces are gathering for a large and heavily escorted convoy to Australia.

China
The host from Ichang will cross the river tomorrow. An all out effort from China Bomber Command is ordered to hit the defenders in the woods across the river and to impede progress of the enemy unit rushing to reinforce the breach.

At grid hex 79,55 in the rough country north of Kukong the Chinese Army delivered a sound defeat to confident attackers. Additional reinforcements are on the way, and this might have been a pivotal battle in holding the line, either there or at building defenses further back. Time will tell. Commander's report of the battle follows.

At this point I would say the hell with the Mersing gambit. It has become apparent that the Japanese need to grab Palembang on turn one.

The Allies can't cover all the entry points into southern Sumatra. Once Singapore falls the 25th Army can be landed somewhere (Oosthaven preferably) and then slog it to Palembang overland.

That's what I'd do anyway.

There are plenty of alternatives, and only time will tell if pulling all those troops in there really matters or not. At this point I'm thinking that it's good (for IJ) to at least shut down Palembang airfield as soon as practicable. It's much easier running this airlift with the planes at Palembang pulling in directly from Singapore and elsewhere. The highest quality troops are coming from Singapore, and if both airfields were shut down (with high service damage) that would take a lot longer. The flying boats would have to be at a third location, fly the troops in from Singapore, then fly the troops to Palembang. I'm already doing that using the Dutch transport planes (very short range) to get Dutch troops out of northern Sumatra. The same issue with troops in no man's land, like the Bde that was in a coastal jungle hex on Malaysia. The flying boats got all but one squad (not worth picking up) and an item too large to fly. If Palembang were shut down that would have been a third party transfer.

LRCAPing here and there would be a great impediment also.

At the present rate, in 3 to 5 more turns Palembang will have 700 AS, the equivalent of 2 light divisions. Forts are still building but slowly due to paucity of engineers. If I'm lucky, count on fort level 3 and 750 to 900 AS to defend in that swamp hex (at 3x I think).

Chinese forces in the woods north of Kukong held against another attack today, and reinforcements are still moving into the region. The battle was costly for both sides, but maybe the line will hold?

Ichang Kaching!
The Chinese attack east across the river by Ichang hit the jackpot today, overwhelming 3 divisions and a mixed brigade. Although Chinese forces did suffer a lot of disablements, the only thing marring the day was the failure of all the Chinese bombers to fly. Had they flown the victory might have been greater.

Seeing the oncoming freight train, the IJA sent it's air might against the troop columns and Ichang airfield, causing severe damage to facilities there. In trade, the enemy left behind more than 20 of their high-tech Nate fighter planes.

Chinese forces are heading back across the river toward Ichang to consolidate defensive positions. Even after the Chinese victory the Empire still expands, swallowing Banjoewangi.

Malaybalay Maybe
An ominous turn of event in the mountains of Mindinao. The invaders have changed tactics from the headlong rushes of yesterday into more deliberate attacks. Today saw higher casualties for the defenders than for the attackers.

Dutchakazies
Breaking through the clouds over the KB parked at Soerabaja came 5 Dutch medium bombers, surely soiling the uniform trousers of some IJN senior officers. Alas, alert Zeros on CAP quickly downed 3 and drove off the remaining pair.

Palembang
Palembang is up to 656 AS. It's funny how troops in beautiful but besieged Singapore are lining up to fly to the swamps of Palembang.

Wenchow
Wenchow holds again, but supplies are heading downward, and enemy casualties are only ~25% higher than defenders.

Batavia
Batavia holds, but no one knows how. Probably heavy weapons and/or combat vehicles were enough to hold down the attackers' pace of advance.

Java Juice
How do you make Java Juice? You squeeze Java from both sides! Batavia went bust today, with very heavy casualties to the defenders. They are now fleeing toward Bandoeng. But the airfield at Bandoeng is closed, so the few remaining combat aircraft at at Kalidjati, which has no combat troops! Semarang was taken by the Empire today, and their two hands now squeeze toward the remaining defenders. Those defenders will resist as long as possible to give time to Palembang...

Palembang
Palembang AS is 667, rising a bit more slowly than before. That might be because the transport planes are currently pulling troops into Padang. After a few more days they will push those troops into Palembang. The flying boats continue pulling good troops from Singapore directly to Palembang.

The Roundup
For the first time in many days, no enemy search planes were seen off the US west coast. Shipyards throughout Allied cities have gone busy. The enemy at Malaybalay seems to be resting (or even awaiting reinforcements), resulting in a mixture of relief and concern for the defenders. Air raids continue all over the battle areas.

Toungoo fell. Camiguin and Boela invaded. Air attacks throughout the battle areas. A fruitless Dutch air attack on transports in the Java Sea. Palembang reaches 680 AS. Air sightings of ships off the US west coast by I-boat air search resumes, but today they find only ASW groups.

Boela and Camiguin fell today; they were undefended.

Invaded
Gorontalo is invaded and will fall as it, too, is undefended. {Note: I hate it when, especially two turns in a row, I have to look up the location of a base that's invaded. "Where the heck is that place?" Even more so because I looked up the latitude and longitude of every base. It took three days. I can send you a file if you want.}

Other News
Wenchow does well in combat but supplies are a worry. There are plenty at the moment but they are being expended at an alarming rate. Malaybalay is attacked again and holds even better than before the quiet, as the foxhole line is held.

Palembang Passes Milestone
Forces at Palembang stand at 710 AS, rocketing past the 700 mark in Assault Strength.

The problem that I have had with Palembang - and all the oil producing centers - is that it seems no matter how strongly they were defended, no matter how many engineers present, they have always been captured with no damage or just a trivial amount. My two objectives here are 1) have it be severely damaged upon capture, and 2) hold it for as long as possible. I can only influence #1 by causing as much battle there as possible, and having as many engineers on hand as possible. I can influence #2 the same way. So, yeah it's an oldie but a goody!

At grid square 85,42 IJA forces crossed the river to join their brethren already peering through the rough, wooded terrain at Chinese patriots. But they crossed at the wrong place and suffered thousands wounded. Chinese reinforcements are moving to the area as the recovered enemy will pose a threat.

Clark Clicks
Another probing attack was treated roughly at Clark Field today. May there be many more!

Kalidjadi Klash
Finally catching wise that the Dutch aircraft could not have been flying from Shangri la owing to lack of the needed range, the enemy bombed Kalidjati aerodrome causing only minor damage.

Subs and Targets
The Dutch subs remaining on station have been finding targets scarce of late. USN ASW groups clashed with I-25 several hundred miles from San Francisco, while nearby a large convoy of planes, troops, and supplies left the FS Bay for the Land Down Under (henceforth known as LDU for security reasons).

Palembang AS stands at 769.

Burma
Prome and Bassein fell today. Fort building at Schwebo, the oil center, are underway. Bombers and modern Hurricane fighters are being positioned for the defense of the open country of central Burma.

China
Nanning is invested with an enemy regiment and brigade. They likely do not posses enough raw strength to capture the city, but the defending combat unit is very inexperienced. Stiffening forces have been dispatched. Also, 3 IJA units are seen moving toward Ankang, which is lightly defended. Additional units were already on the way there and more deployments have been ordered.

DEI
Kalidjati is almost closed, which is appropriate because there are almost no aircraft remaining. In a stunning act of bravery, ABDA HQ has spontaneously taken up duty as the rear guard for the KNIL forces retreating to Bandoeng. Palembang AS = 786.

The Roundup
Somehow IJA troops were able to wrestle control of Buitenzorg from ABDA HQ. Air attacks across the battle zones continued, with Kalidjati getting hammered worst. Maneuvering continues in China. On both sides, subs are relegated to objects of attack.

Palembang has reached 800 AS. There are 89 additional to airlift out of Singapore (without changing HQ's of other units), and about 60 still elsewhere on Sumatra. It might prove impossible to transport any troops from Java, and just a few candidates are emerging from jungles on Borneo. Supplies have been growing as well and now stand at about 83,000.

Watampone was slurped into the Empire. Chinese defenders held off another attack in the great Sian woods. Multiple enemy maneuvers are seen in China. They must be foiled.

Preparations
Palembang has 814 AS. The limit will be either when the notices the quite significant draw-down of forces in Singapore or when the Empire commences operations against Palembang thereby interfering with the airlift.

Highlights
Air attacks continue throughout the active battle areas. Wenchow repulsed yet another enemy attack, this one at 1 to 3 odds. As expected, enemy units plunged into the woods on the road to Ankang. Other movements are observed throughout China.

Palembang's skies were swept by carrier based Zeros, costing some defending Buffaloes and fewer Zeros. The small carrier TF has taken up station between Palembang and Singapore, but no flying boats were intercepted. ABDA command has ordered that Dutch submarines intercept the interlopers. Palembang AS stands at 832.

Invasions!
Legaspi, Loewoek, and Ambon all invaded this turn. Ambon is defended so surely the invaders will be hurled into the sea? The initial artillery bombardment yielded no results but that was just practice!

Sacrifice
In an effort to gain Neptune's favor, an xAK was sacrificed to the Cracken, which took the form of an I-boat far into the Pacific off the US west coast. Ship, crew, and embarked supplies were lost.

Land Battles
Enemy attacks were repulsed in China and the Philippines. Nanning, invested by 2 enemy Bde/Reg units held at 1 to 2 odds with casualties twice for the attackers. Wenchow beat that performance in a larger battle with 1 to 3 odds and casualties for the attackers 10 times the defenders.

Malaybalay on Mindinao was hammered at 2 to 1 odds, but casualties were still higher for the attackers. All 3 bases figure to keep holding with the current force levels, although Wenchow and Malaybalay will certainly run out of supplies. Wenchow also reports more enemy nearby.

Land Maneuvers
The enemy units moving on Ankang must be either armored or recon as their speed to too great for infantry. Defenses are prepared in the woods on rough ground behind the river crossing. Enemy strength is uncertain, but consists of 3 units.

The Evil Imperial Guards Division is now advancing after being hit by air yesterday. Another, unidentified unit has emerged on the parallel road leading to Magwe (where the oil is). It looks as though the EIGD means to attack through the bases past Magwe and then swing around, joining other units for an Empire Strikes Backward stroke. The target of air affection has been switched to the new unit for today. Friendly units to the east are pulling back to upper Burma and units at Magwe are beginning a withdrawal to the India/Burma border along the coast. The goal is to delay while preserving enough unit strength to tie down enemy units with Burma garrison duty.

DEI
Units are seen advancing eastward along the north coast road of Java. All three remaining staffed airfields - Kalidjati, Bandoeng, and Tjilatjap - remain closed.

Palembang received another fighter sweep today. The small carrier group is dancing to avoid becoming sub food, but they are closing in. Assault Strength stands at 860.

The town of Pingsiang was captured, part of the enemy's attempt to outflank defenses in the woods between Kukong and Hengyang. Chinese forces arrived too late to intervene, but are on the way in force. At Wenchow the enemy made better progress than yesterday by shock attacking, and took only 4 times the casualties of the defenders. Odds were 1 to 3. The boys in the woods at grid square 86,49 also held off a shock attack at 1 to 1 odds, even though out-gunned 3 to 1. Enemy casualties were 2 1/2 times our own. The defenses south of Ankang were tested as the swiftly moving enemy units crossed the river, shock attacking in the process. The 15th Tank Regiment, 12th Tank Regiment, and 1st Recon Regiment attcked the 29th Chinese Corps at 1 to 1 odds. A much stronger unit will arrive in combat formation to join the 29th tomorrow.

Philippines
Clark Field continues building fortifications as the air attacks are focused on ground units themselves. Malaybalay also held off a shock attack, but ominously friendly casualties were higher than enemy casualties.

DEI
Ambon saw the continued unloading of troops with at least one enemy troop ship handled very roughly indeed by the defensive batteries. Enemy troops appear equal in number to our own. They are doomed!

Palembang was swept again, costing defending fighters. Assault Strength stands at 884.

The forces trapped in the woods near Sinyang (grid square 86,49) hold off another attack and continue to dish out more than they receive. The surprise reinforcement near Ankang went well for the Chinese forces, as the enemy made a deliberate attack that reaped 1 to 18 odds. Enemy casualties were modest, though. In the hopes that that the enemy mobile forces suffered disruption and are vulnerable, SAC has ordered a shock attack with the present 3 to 1 Assault Strength advantage. Smashing the enemy's mobile forces is an opportunity that must be seized.

Philippines & Eastern DEI
Tired and disrupted attackers at Malaybalay accepted 1 to 2 odds and twice the casualties of the defenders. Meanwhile, enemy forces at Ambon sit quietly and await their destruction.

Western DEI & Singapore
Palembang has reached 2 milestones. Assault Strength now stands at 903, the rough equivalent of 2 full heavy divisions. With almost 90,000 supply (and growing) there should also be adequate heavy equipment. The second milestone is that Singapore was attacked today, effectively ending the airlift from that beleaguered fortress. The odds were 1 to 2, but engineers reduced the fortifications to 2 and casualties were roughly even. HQ's are being airlifted into Palembang from Java to direct the final defense. Between Sumatra and far eastern Java it is theoretically possible to bring in more than 100 additional AS. We will see what enemy action allows.

One of the most requested fixes down through the years -- starting with: "Can we at least repair the damage?"

Anytime I see the "Mersing Gambit" I think of the "Palembang Defense." If I knew anything about chess I'ld be tempted to come up with more.

Any chance you might comment on how you deploy the variety of support and engineering assets as they become available? RL is keeping me out of the game these days (even against the AI) but I follow Da Babes as I can.

So far there have been a very limited number of base-type forces arriving. A fair-sized batch - around 8 - either arrived just after start or were there at start at one of the southern US west coast bases. They were all around 40-50% filled out. I paid PP to put each in an unrestricted command. I have 3 or 4 (I would have to look, but I think it's 4) on the way to Australia with that big batch of SWPac air groups that comes in early. IIRC they fill out to about 72 aviation support, which will be sorely needed as Australia is very tight on av support now.

Most of the rest have arrived in India or Aden (all for India), one on Ceylon, and maybe a couple in Australia. If I notice anything else done to date I'll add to a later post, and I'll cover those dispositions more routinely, too.

Land Day
Today was a day of land combat (with the usual - now expected - air attacks), and of additional enemy movements noted in China. Grid square 86,49 in the woods near Sinyang saw Chinese defenders again hold off a superior force's shock attack at 1 to 1 odds but inflicting 2 to 1 casualties on the enemy. Clark Field held at 1 to 2 odds with less casualties than the besiegers. Malaybalay held off a shock attack by a disrupted enemy at 1 to 2 odds and also took fewer casualties. Kalidjati was slurped after being successfully evacuated and Manila has been invested by an enemy unit of undetermined strength. Will this stop production of supply by Manila's Light Industry?

Highlights
The IJN lent a hand at Wenchow with a naval bombardment. It was quite effective (600 fires) and might even destroy some industry. The IJA followed up with... a land bombardment. At grid 86,49 (near Sinyang) another IJA attack was repulsed at 1 to 2 odds, with defender casualties about 2/3's of attackers losses. Ambon saw more enemy land, so perhaps the enemy's destruction will have to wait. The Kure 1st SNLF and Sasebo 8th SNLF attacked the ex-defenders of Koepang in the jungles of Timor and pushed them toward Dili. Air attacks continued around the battle areas, except (again) Burma. The withdrawal is going well without interference from the air.

Still more maneuvering is seen in China, with a large number of units bearing down on Changsha, and others moving west from Kukong toward Wuchow and perhaps Kweilin. Changsha has level 6 forts and strong defenders, with more on the move, so that would be a welcome place to tie down an IJA spearhead.

The IJA forces north of Kukong might have been drawn down to provide forces for the move toward Wuchow. Tomorrow's bombardment will assess enemy strength. If they have created a weak spot, an attack and follow up drive on Kukong will begin.

Chinese forces superior to the invaders will be in place in Pingsiang tomorrow (SE of Hengyang and SW of Changsha). More are passing through Changsha already, and together they will retake Pingsiang and perhaps liberate recently captured Chinese cities beyond.

Other operations are underway in China, but this publication has not received clearance to print them.

Palembang stands at 951 AS and 90,000 supplies. The airlift continues.

The whereabouts of all enemy carriers is unknown.
